NYC Interborough Express enters design phase for Brooklyn-Queens light rail

CBS News4 days ago
The Interborough Express, New York City's first light rail system which would link Brooklyn and Queens, is another step closer to becoming a reality.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Friday the project to build the nation's busiest light rail system has entered the engineering and design phase.
Renderings provide a glimpse into the future of transit between two of New York's most-populated, yet underserved communities.
"A clean, fast, 14-mile light rail line. A connection between Brooklyn and Queens like never before. We're calling it the Interborough Express, IBX," Hochul said.
The plan has been discussed for more than 30 years. But it's now moving into the next phase.
"This means a lot of planning is going to occur. Looking at the stations, tracks, vehicles, signals, so we can get shovels in the ground and make this become a reality," the governor said.
Hochul approved $2.75 billion in funding for the project back in April. It's aimed at reducing the travel time between Brooklyn and Queens to 32 minutes for more than 1 million New Yorkers and other commuters.
"One of the things I love best about this project is that we get to get more transit out of the infrastructure we have," MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said.
The IBX light rail would extend from Sunset Park, Brooklyn, to Jackson Heights, Queens, with a total of 19 new stations connecting to 17 subway lines.
They would be the first new transit stations in Brooklyn since 1948 and Queens since 1988.
The MTA is now coming up with an underground design for Metropolitan Avenue in Queens to, hopefully, make the area less prone to delays.
"I think it would be great because the commute sometimes gets a little busy," Louisa Brenya, of Queens, said.
Diana Arboleda, of Jackson Heights, is all too familiar with the current lengthy and inconvenient ways to get to Brooklyn from her home.
"It's a hassle," she said.
"This would help me a lot because the commute is time consuming," Kasheen Buckner, of Brooklyn, said.
IBX is expected to become the busiest light rail system in the country, with 48 million riders annually.

Proposed ferry along Portland metro area secures tentative approval for dock usage

PORTLAND, Ore. () — Although funding for a ferry that would connect Vancouver with Oregon City remains in question, Portland officials have tentatively allowed transit leaders to use two docks managed by the city. In a letter sent to Friends of Frog Ferry Founder and President Susan Bladholm on July 25, Deputy City Administrator of Public Works Priya Dhanapal confirmed the organization could be permitted to operate from docks at Cathedral Park and the RiverPlace Marina. Portland Pickles, Disney reach settlement in 'David vs. Goliath' trademark lawsuit 'Use of City-owned docks remains subject to applicable laws, policies, public access considerations, asset management requirements, alignment with long-term City plans and budgetary capacity, and Council direction,' Dhanapal wrote. 'Any preliminary support expressed herein is revocable and expires if project funding is not secured within 12 months.' Since Friends of Frog Ferry launched in 2017, leaders have faced multiple hurdles in garnering financial support for the push to expand transit options across 35 miles of the Willamette River along the Portland metro area. Earlier this spring, founder the project needs to secure more money this year — or it could likely fail. The organization has already secured $40 million in 'research, planning, and community engagement' for the $60 million effort, according to a statement issued on Monday. To fulfill their goals, leaders have applied to receive $10 million in Portland Clean Energy Funds over three years. If Friends of Frog Ferry were to reach its funding goals, safety improvements, new pedestrian infrastructure and other renovations would be in store for both the Cathedral Park and RiverPlace Marina docks. The latter of which would be in close proximity to the proposed Major League Baseball stadium along the city's south waterfront — a factor that's received support from both the Portland Diamond Project and the Downtown Neighborhood Association. 'This proposal connects so many important projects in the central city together: the OMSI District, the future Major League Baseball stadium, OHSU, a revitalized downtown waterfront, and getting Portlanders back down into the core of the city safely and quickly,' Stickler said in a statement. Elizabeth Warren Just Ended The Taxing Billionaires Argument With One Hilarious Line

Elizabeth Warren was on CNBC on Monday to talk about NYC mayor contender, Zohran Mamdani. The senator from Massachusetts got into it with CNBC host David Faber about making things more affordable by taxing the rich. Related: Here's that interaction: CNBC/atrupar/Twitter: @atrupar "The issue is affordability. Do you know how many working families are chased out of New York City every day because they can't afford housing, they can't afford groceries, they can't afford childcare?" she said. "What Zohran is saying is, 'I want people to be able to afford to live in New York City.' That's what keeps it a vibrant city. That's what makes people want to live here." 'Nobody disagrees with that, Senator, but raising taxes in order to do it? Why is that the answer?' Faber replied back. Related: "Oh my goodness! Oh dear! Are you worried the billionaires are going to go hungry?" she quipped. "No, I'm worried that they're going to leave and spend their money elsewhere," he said back. Related: "You know they've threatened to do that over and over. You want to have a workable city? You want to have a city that's vibrant? You want to have a city where the streets are full, where there are things for sale 24 hours a day, then you need people who can live here or work here. Not people who have to take an hour and a half in." People in the replies are loving her explanation and in agreement that billionaires will, in fact, not leave NYC. "New York City is the cultural and financial capital of the country they are not going anywhere listen to yourself… talking about fucking Austin lmaooo," one person said. Related: "Rich people in new york city want to be rich in new york city. They aren't moving to Dallas be so fucking for real!" another person replied. And this person joked, "'they'll leave' so tax them everywhere." Thoughts, feelings, concerns? Also in In the News: Also in In the News: Also in In the News: Solve the daily Crossword

Brooklyn Mirage owner files for bankruptcy after venue fails to open for season

Avant Gardner, the company behind the outdoor music venue Brooklyn Mirage, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Monday. The filing comes three months after the venue failed to open for the season. The company says its two indoor spaces, known as the Great Hall and the Kings Hall, will remain open during the Chapter 11 process. "The decision to file for Chapter 11 relief follows several months of financial distress, culminating with Avant Gardner being unable to open its newly constructed Mirage event space for the 2025 season," read a statement posted on the venue's Instagram account. "Many of the Mirage shows are being moved to the Great Hall or otherwise relocated for the remainder of 2025." Brooklyn Mirage unable to open for 2025 season The popular outdoor venue in East Williamsburg had to postpone its grand opening with DJ Sara Landry after organizers said they failed to meet an inspection deadline. Avant Gardner canceled the first show just hours before it started on May 1 and said ticket holders would receive a full refund. "We want to be clear: the venue is show ready and the New Mirage has been built to exacting safety, structural, mechanical, and technical specifications. However, we were not able to meet the final inspection deadline today," the company said in a statement at the time. The company eventually brought in a new CEO, but the new Mirage never materialized. "The Avant Gardner complex is a truly special music venue that has provided cutting edge experiences over the years for artists and fans from all around the globe. Everyone I speak to has had the best sets and very special memories at the Brooklyn Mirage," CEO Gary Richards said in Monday's statement. The Brooklyn Mirage, which started out as a pop-up party, opened in 2017 and later expanded to include the indoor spaces, hosting big-name artists year round.
