Actress with 14kg of gold arrested at Bengaluru airport, jailed
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Wednesday raided the Bengaluru residence of jailed Kannada actress Ranya Rao and seized a huge quantity of cash and gold worth crores of rupees.
The raid followed Rao's arrest at Bengaluru International Airport, where she was caught smuggling 14.8 kg of gold. Authorities recovered Rs 2.06 crore worth of gold and Rs 2.67 crore in cash from her upscale Lavelle Road flat, where she reportedly paid Rs4.5 lakh in rent.
Ranya Rao, 32, is the daughter of Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police (Police Housing Corporation). However, he has distanced himself from her, stating that they have not been in touch since her marriage four months ago.
According to police, the actress was taken into custody on Monday night at the airport after her arrival on a flight from a Gulf country. Getting information that the accused actress had boarded the flight, a team of four officers from the DRI officers came down to the Bengaluru airport and awaited her arrival.
The DRI had been monitoring her frequent trips to the Gulf country, which reportedly included four visits in just 15 days.
Investigators revealed that she smuggled gold bars concealed in her belt and clothing, using her DGP father's name to evade suspicion.
Upon landing, she would call police personnel for a pick-up, who then escorted her home.
The DRI is now probing whether any police personnel or an IPS officer related to her was involved in the gold smuggling operation or if she acted alone.
Officials are also investigating whether she had trafficked gold on previous occasions.
Following her arrest, she was taken to the DRI headquarters in Bengaluru for questioning and later produced in court, where she was remanded to judicial custody.
Ranya Rao, who has acted opposite Kannada superstar Sudeep in Maanikya, has also worked in other South Indian films.

Day ahead of release, Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life' faces trouble
A pro-Kannada organisation, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, attempted to lay siege to a theatre in Bengaluru, to restrict the release of Kamal Haasan's Thug Life. Praveen Shetty of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike warned the owners of Victory Cinema not to release the movie, alleging that the actor has made inappropriate remarks about the Kannada language. The move by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike came after actor reportedly said "Kannada is born out of Tamil" during a promotional event in Chennai. This led to several protests by the pro-Kannada organisations and the ban by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce over the release of the movie 'Thug Life'. While speaking with ANI, Praveen Shetty said, "Kamal Haasan has spoken against the Kannada language... In this context, we came here today and told the theatre owners not to release Kamal Haasan's film. Kamal Haasan's film should not be released in Karnataka. If the film is released, the government will be held responsible for any untoward incidents that follow." Last week, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah criticised Haasan for his reported remark, stating that he was not aware of the "long-standing" history of the language. "Kannada has a long-standing history. Poor Kamal Haasan, he is unaware of it," the Karnataka Chief Minister said. Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, also stars Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan TR in lead roles. Speaking to media personnel outside the DMK party headquarters in Chennai, Haasan said, "It is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala is true. Nobody will suspect it except for those who have an agenda. I've been threatened earlier too, and if I am wrong, I would apologise, if I'm not, I won't." Meanwhile, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has banned the release of Thug Life over the actor's purported remarks on the Kannada language. Speaking to mediapersons in Bengaluru, Sa Ra Govindu, representative of KFCC, said that they have decided to ban the movie's release in Karnataka as they stand firmly with Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and other Kannada organisations. The KFCC representative said that Kamal Haasan has not yet issued an apology for hurting the sentiments of the Kannada people during his promotional event in Chennai. He said, "When there is pressure, I have to do. Even Karnataka Rakshana Vedike were present; whatever they say, we should do it. Even they would speak about it. Definitely, there is no 'Sorry' term being specified anywhere by Kamal Hassan. We will surely not release the film. We (KFCC) will stand with Rakshina Vedike and other Kannada organisations."

SEBI bans Bollywood star Arshad Warsi, wife, 57 others from securities markets for up to 5 years
Markets regulator the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Thursday barred Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi, his wife Maria Goretti, and 57 others from the securities markets for periods ranging from 1-5 years. The regulator imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh each on Warsi and his wife, Maria. The decision came in a case related to misleading videos on YouTube channels recommending investors to buy shares of Sadhana Broadcast. SEBI found that Arshad Warsi had made a profit of Rs41.70 lakh and his wife earned a profit of Rs50.35 lakh. "It is noted that Arshad Hussain Warsi in his statement recorded before SEBI on June 27, 2023, stated that apart from placing trades in his own account, he was also trading from the accounts of his wife (Noticee 61) and brother (Noticee 62). It is further noted from the submissions of Noticee 60 that Aahuti Mistry acted as the manager of Arshad Warsi,' according to the SEBI order. SEBI also levied penalties in the range of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 5 crore on 57 other entities, including promoters of Sadhana Broadcast (now Crystal Business System Ltd). Apart from the debarment, SEBI also directed these entities to disgorge total unlawful gains of Rs 58.01 crore along with 12% interest per annum from the end of the investigation period till the date of actual payment. The capital markets regulator said the masterminds behind this whole operation were Gaurav Gupta, Rakesh Kumar Gupta and Manish Mishra. Subhash Aggarwal, who also happened to be a director of the RTA of Sadhana Broadcast Ltd, acted as the go-between Manish Mishra and the promoters, the order stated. SEBI received complaints, alleging that there was price manipulation and subsequent offloading of shares in the scrip of SBL. It was also stated in the complaints that YouTube videos were being uploaded with false content to lure investors and a paid marketing campaign worth crores was undertaken to make the videos reach a wider audience. The complainant also provided links to YouTube videos, names of YouTube channels and dates when the videos were uploaded. SEBI examined the complaints and prima facie found that net sellers in the shares of SBL were connected to the creator of YouTube channels, wherein videos with false content and unrealistic target price for the scrip were uploaded with the intention to influence and induce public investors to invest in the scrip. "Search and seizure operations were conducted at the premises of 15 Noticees wherein various documentary and electronic evidences were gathered and statements of various Noticees were recorded on oath," according to the markets regulator. Indian actor Ranya Rao gets conditional bail in gold smuggling case
Actor Ranya Rao on Tuesday was granted conditional bail by the Economic Offences Court in an alleged connection with a gold smuggling case. Despite the bail, she will remain in jail under the COFEPOSA (Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act) case. Tarun Kondaraju, a co-accused in the gold smuggling case, was also granted conditional bail. The court approved their release on the condition that each submits two sureties and a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh. The court also barred both from leaving the country and ordered them not to commit similar offences. Rao was arrested on March 3 at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport after Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials found her carrying gold. The Central Bureau of Investigation later filed a first information report–– the basis for initiating investigation in India––based on a complaint by Abhishek Chandra Gupta, additional director of DRI. The FIR was registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act of 1988 and several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, the Indian Penal Code. According to the complaint, two foreign nationals were arrested at Mumbai Airport on March 6 for attempting to smuggle 21.28 kg of gold into India, valued at Rs 189.2 million (Dh8.11 million).
