Foreigners now smuggle in exotic wildlife into India

CHENNAI: In a rare development pointing to a shift in smuggling tactics, Customs officials at Bengaluru International Airport arrested two Thai women for allegedly attempting to bring in exotic wildlife, including a baby monkey and protected birds, from Thailand into India around three weeks ago. According to sources, the arrests indicate that international wildlife trafficking syndicates based in Thailand and Malaysia may now be employing foreign nationals as carriers to evade detection by Customs and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials at Indian airports. Until now, Indian nationals -- mostly from Tamil Nadu -- were commonly used as mules to bring in protected species such as primates, reptiles and exotic birds. Although a Malaysian woman was intercepted at Chennai airport in 2024, she was later found to be of Indian origin with roots in Tamil Nadu. Officials believe that many of the 'kingpins' orchestrating these smuggling operations from Southeast Asia also hail from Tamil Nadu. The two Thai nationals, No-Ree Tenglong and Faesah Makseng, both aged 30, arrived in Bengaluru on Thai Airways flight TG-325 from Bangkok. During a baggage check, Customs officials discovered a Douc Langur, an endangered primate native to Southeast Asia, and two Writhed Hornbills, which are endemic to the Philippines. Both species are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and the Wildlife Protection Act. While the langur died in transit, the birds were rescued by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), treated and later deported to Thailand in accordance with international protocols. 'In earlier cases, the carriers were mostly young men from Chennai, Tiruchy and Ramanathapuram. The involvement of foreigners as mules comes as a surprise,' said a senior official. Officials noted that most seizures in India take place on a specific set of flights from Malaysia and Thailand. The gangs, it is believed, may be attempting to circumvent this by changing the passenger profile, say sources.

Actress with 14kg of gold arrested at Bengaluru airport, jailed

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Wednesday raided the Bengaluru residence of jailed Kannada actress Ranya Rao and seized a huge quantity of cash and gold worth crores of rupees. The raid followed Rao's arrest at Bengaluru International Airport, where she was caught smuggling 14.8 kg of gold. Authorities recovered Rs 2.06 crore worth of gold and Rs 2.67 crore in cash from her upscale Lavelle Road flat, where she reportedly paid Rs4.5 lakh in rent. Ranya Rao, 32, is the daughter of Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police (Police Housing Corporation). However, he has distanced himself from her, stating that they have not been in touch since her marriage four months ago. According to police, the actress was taken into custody on Monday night at the airport after her arrival on a flight from a Gulf country. Getting information that the accused actress had boarded the flight, a team of four officers from the DRI officers came down to the Bengaluru airport and awaited her arrival. The DRI had been monitoring her frequent trips to the Gulf country, which reportedly included four visits in just 15 days. Investigators revealed that she smuggled gold bars concealed in her belt and clothing, using her DGP father's name to evade suspicion. Upon landing, she would call police personnel for a pick-up, who then escorted her home. The DRI is now probing whether any police personnel or an IPS officer related to her was involved in the gold smuggling operation or if she acted alone. Officials are also investigating whether she had trafficked gold on previous occasions. Following her arrest, she was taken to the DRI headquarters in Bengaluru for questioning and later produced in court, where she was remanded to judicial custody. Ranya Rao, who has acted opposite Kannada superstar Sudeep in Maanikya, has also worked in other South Indian films.

Rs 20.6 Million in Gold and Rs 26.7 Million in Cash Seized from Jailed Kannada Actress Ranya Rao's Flat in Gold Smuggling Case

In a significant development related to the ongoing gold smuggling investigation, authorities have seized a massive amount of gold and cash from the residence of Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who is currently in custody. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted a raid at her upscale flat on Lavelle Road, Bengaluru, uncovering a stash worth crores. The raid uncovered Rs 20.6 million worth of gold and Rs 26.7 million in cash, according to DRI officials. Ranya Rao had previously been arrested at the Bengaluru International Airport, where she was caught with 14.8 kg of gold hidden in her clothing. Investigators believe the actress used her frequent international trips, including multiple visits to Dubai, to smuggle the precious metal into India. Rao, 32, is the daughter of Ramachandra Rao, the Director General of Police for the Police Housing Corporation. However, her father has distanced himself from the controversy, revealing that the two have had no contact since her marriage four months ago. The actress had made several trips abroad, prompting the DRI to monitor her movements closely. On the day of her arrest, four officers from the DRI were stationed at the airport, awaiting her arrival. Reports suggest that Rao exploited her father's status to bypass security checks, often arranging for local police to assist her after her arrival. Authorities are now investigating the extent of her involvement in smuggling operations and whether any law enforcement officers or other officials were complicit in the crimes. The DRI is also looking into the possibility that Ranya Rao had engaged in smuggling activities before. After her arrest, Rao was taken to the DRI office for questioning and was later presented in court, where she was remanded to judicial custody. The actress, who has appeared in several South Indian films, including a major role opposite Kannada actor Sudeep in Maanikya, remains at the center of a high-profile investigation.
