England's World Cup conquerers dumped out as German pair dismantled after mega ticket rush
Interest rocketed in the German duo's blistering triumph over Luke Humphries and Luke Littler in the last 16 but the dreams were short-lived
Glory hunting German darts fans had their dreams crushed by the brilliance of Northern Irish duo Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney.
Home duo Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko's sensational wins over England and Australia had lifted belief the hosts could claim a famous first victory in the World Cup of Darts.
Interest rocketed in the German duo's outstanding work and blistering triumph over Luke Humphries and Luke Littler in the last 16.
Going onto their next match, the home team battled back from the brink of defeat to sink the Aussies and further inspire belief it could be their time.
As soon as Schindler landed the winning shot against the Down Under duo of Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock on Sunday afternoon, eager punters snapped up tickets to go to the arena and join those who had already booked their spots in Frankfurt hoping to catch the magical moment.
Sky TV commentator Dan Dawson revealed: 'Since Germany hit the winning double this afternoon against Australia, more than 3,000 tickets sold for tonight, another 10 per cent were sold in the time since the quarter-final.
"People have been buying tickets thinking this is going to happen. They might have changed their mind in a short space of time.'
However, their dreams were short-lived as Gurney and Rock dismantled the Germans and buried their chances of title glory.
The Irish pair stormed into a 5-0 lead to make the chances of success disappear and completed an 8-1 triumph to book a spot in the Final.
It was a savage blow to the home supporters who bought their tickets before and after the last-eight win for Schindler and Pietreczko, but it was joy for the victors.
Gurney was sporting towards the punters afterwards and said: 'I know it didn't go the way of Germany, but the atmosphere was absolutely incredible. I'd just like to applaud everybody here in Frankfurt. They were super and so respectful. I am so pleased to be in the Final.'
Gurney played down the move through and added: ' The only thing we have done is qualify for a Final. We have won nothing yet. We have won exactly the same as if you were playing in the first round. We will try our damnedest in the Final. You can't win a pairs competition without playing as pairs.
"He might do all the scoring and I might do all the finishing and if we can do it in the Final, we will give ourselves a good chance. But this man has been phenomenal. I'm privileged to play alongside him and thanks to Josh and the crowd.'
Rock said: 'As I keep saying, playing for your country is a passion and we are here as a team, that's the main thing.'

The following day, he took a selfie with polesitter Lewis Hamilton's car and in the race the Mercedes man lost the lead before the first corner and finished fourth. In Canada, Rosberg avoided taking a picture of any cars but instead posted a selfie of himself on the start grid… in the exact spot that Norris and Piastri collided – something fans immediately noticed. 'The curse of Nico Rosberg lives on,' one Reddit user stated, while another added: 'Seriously this has to be studied. There's no way there can be this much coincidence.' 'His powers are too dangerous to go unchecked. How can we harness this power?' one fan jokingly asked. 'Bro cursed the guy right there,' was one comment on Instagram, while another read: 'I'm back from lap 67. BRO DID CURSE TURN 1.' Norris instantly accepted full responsibility for the collision, which could have major ramifications on the title race, saying: 'I didn't expect to pass Oscar on the outside into Turn One. It's just, I should never have gone for it, I guess is my complete hindsight thing. 'I thought he was starting to drift a little bit to the right, so I thought I had a small opportunity to go to the left. But it was way too much risk, especially on my team-mate. 'So, happy nothing happened to him. I paid the price for my mistake. 'Our rule number one is to not make contact with your team-mate and it's what I did. McLaren is my family. I race for them, you know, every single weekend. 'I try and do well for them, more than I often try and do well for myself. So, when I let them down like this and when I make a fool of myself in a moment like today, yeah, I have a lot of regret. 'I've let down the team. So, that's going to stay with me for a little while. But at the same time, part of moving on is trying to put it behind you and crack on with the next weekend.' Benjamin Nygren green lights Celtic seismic switch directly linked to a bristling Brendan Rodgers grievance
The Premiership champions have a way of working but changes could be afoot in Glasgow's east end Managers often bristle at the notion over the simplicity surrounding formation switches when viewed in the old fashioned sense. The days of a 4-4-2 and the 4-3-3 which lacks in flexibility appear to belong to a bygone era as modern managers live for the nuances which can give their side a tactical leg-up on Celtic. And you can bet Brendan Rodgers and his trusted lieutenants led by John Kennedy will be seeking ways to evolve his side as he begins the third season of his second trophy-laden spell in Glasgow. The champions have been active with Kieran Tierney and Ross Doohan signed and Fulham standout Callum Osmand and Sweden international Benjamin Nygren soon to follow.. And it's the soon-to-be arrival of the Nordsjælland hot turn which offers a genuine shot to offer significant change to the way the champions play. He plays on the right wing by trade, the position currently occupied by RB Leipzig target Nicolas Kuhn, however, Nygren's knack for moving inside the pitch happens at double the rate of the German. Record Sport checks out the changes which could be afoot. 3-4-3 or something fresh? One of Celtic's calling cards under Rodgers 2.0 has been the over and underlapping of Alistair Johnston but the return of Tierney likely means only one full-back would bomb on at a time in a traditional 4-4-3 with Mikael Lustig famously shifting over to form a back three when the pair wreaked havoc under Rodgers during his first reign. But, and this is a significant but, Rodgers appears to have the personnel to shift to a formation, one he previously called upon in 2015 when at Liverpool, and that is a 3-4-3, in all but name, at least. In the revised line-up it allows two full-backs, Tierney and Johnston to bomb forward in tandem and offers Benjamin Nygren the chance to tap into his penchant for drifting into the role of a false nine rather than being marooned on the wing. A new way of thinking could also include Hayato Inamura - the J-League target who can play both in defence and at left-back. And this re-imagination of the Rodgers bluerprint comes attached with a significant caveat, of course, as the Premiership champions are actively seeking a marquee winger with Michel-Ange Balikwisha, Nilson Angulo and Sondre Orjasæter all admired by Parkhead decision makers. However, with Jota out until the New Year, Kuhn being tracked by suitors across Europe and Maeda thriving as a central striker – there may never be a better time for transformation. It would also unlock Arne Engels further up the pitch. Rodgers – speaking after it was deployed in his Liverpool side during a League Cup win against Bournemouth in 2014 – made clear innovations, such as Raheem Sterling starring as a No.10, weren't solely the work of managers from abroad. He said: "When you have got the players to play in the way we want to work you can see the issues and the problems we can cause opponents. We had that ability to break forward with speed and on the counterattack for probably the first time [this season]. That was clear. That tactical element is critical to how we work. 'The other night it was a British coach playing 3-4-3 so he has probably thrown the team together. 'He has played seven midfielders?' If it was a foreign coach it would probably have been seen as a wonderful tactical idea of playing the game. 'Sterling playing through the middle – what is he doing? [Lazar] Markovic out wide?' But that is the key for us – trying to get the players in position who can make us effective.' How a shifting Celtic could shape up Back to Nygren, those who have worked with him reckon playing out wide limits what the Swede can bring to a team. Ex-IFK Gothenburg sporting director Mats Gren sees Nygren evolving as his career develops. Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: "When Benjamin plays on the right wing or as a No9, he can be effective. However, he is best as a No 10. That is where all his qualities can be on show."
