Benjamin Nygren green lights Celtic seismic switch directly linked to a bristling Brendan Rodgers grievance
The Premiership champions have a way of working but changes could be afoot in Glasgow's east end
Managers often bristle at the notion over the simplicity surrounding formation switches when viewed in the old fashioned sense.
The days of a 4-4-2 and the 4-3-3 which lacks in flexibility appear to belong to a bygone era as modern managers live for the nuances which can give their side a tactical leg-up on Celtic.
And you can bet Brendan Rodgers and his trusted lieutenants led by John Kennedy will be seeking ways to evolve his side as he begins the third season of his second trophy-laden spell in Glasgow.
The champions have been active with Kieran Tierney and Ross Doohan signed and Fulham standout Callum Osmand and Sweden international Benjamin Nygren soon to follow..
And it's the soon-to-be arrival of the Nordsjælland hot turn which offers a genuine shot to offer significant change to the way the champions play.
He plays on the right wing by trade, the position currently occupied by RB Leipzig target Nicolas Kuhn, however, Nygren's knack for moving inside the pitch happens at double the rate of the German. Record Sport checks out the changes which could be afoot.
3-4-3 or something fresh?
One of Celtic's calling cards under Rodgers 2.0 has been the over and underlapping of Alistair Johnston but the return of Tierney likely means only one full-back would bomb on at a time in a traditional 4-4-3 with Mikael Lustig famously shifting over to form a back three when the pair wreaked havoc under Rodgers during his first reign.
But, and this is a significant but, Rodgers appears to have the personnel to shift to a formation, one he previously called upon in 2015 when at Liverpool, and that is a 3-4-3, in all but name, at least.
In the revised line-up it allows two full-backs, Tierney and Johnston to bomb forward in tandem and offers Benjamin Nygren the chance to tap into his penchant for drifting into the role of a false nine rather than being marooned on the wing. A new way of thinking could also include Hayato Inamura - the J-League target who can play both in defence and at left-back.
And this re-imagination of the Rodgers bluerprint comes attached with a significant caveat, of course, as the Premiership champions are actively seeking a marquee winger with Michel-Ange Balikwisha, Nilson Angulo and Sondre Orjasæter all admired by Parkhead decision makers.
However, with Jota out until the New Year, Kuhn being tracked by suitors across Europe and Maeda thriving as a central striker – there may never be a better time for transformation. It would also unlock Arne Engels further up the pitch.
Rodgers – speaking after it was deployed in his Liverpool side during a League Cup win against Bournemouth in 2014 – made clear innovations, such as Raheem Sterling starring as a No.10, weren't solely the work of managers from abroad.
He said: "When you have got the players to play in the way we want to work you can see the issues and the problems we can cause opponents. We had that ability to break forward with speed and on the counterattack for probably the first time [this season]. That was clear. That tactical element is critical to how we work.
'The other night it was a British coach playing 3-4-3 so he has probably thrown the team together. 'He has played seven midfielders?' If it was a foreign coach it would probably have been seen as a wonderful tactical idea of playing the game. 'Sterling playing through the middle – what is he doing? [Lazar] Markovic out wide?' But that is the key for us – trying to get the players in position who can make us effective.'
How a shifting Celtic could shape up
Back to Nygren, those who have worked with him reckon playing out wide limits what the Swede can bring to a team.
Ex-IFK Gothenburg sporting director Mats Gren sees Nygren evolving as his career develops. Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: "When Benjamin plays on the right wing or as a No9, he can be effective. However, he is best as a No 10. That is where all his qualities can be on show."

Liverpool transfer collapsed after medical and it left £60m target left stunned
Jurgen Klopp pinpointed Nabil Fekir as a key target for Liverpool in 2018 and despite the Frenchman having agreed to the move, it sensationally collapsed as the midfielder told his side of the story Nabil Fekir admitted he was baffled as to why his transfer to Liverpool collapsed. The Frenchman was a key target for Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2018 and was looked at by fans as the replacement of Philippe Coutinho who had left for Barcelona earlier that year in January. With a reported fee of £58.5million having been agreed with Olympique Lyon for Fekir 's services, the attacking midfielder underwent a medical and had agreed personal terms with the Premier League giants. But in a surprising twist, his impending move to Anfield collapsed with reports suggesting that it was a knee issue during Fekir's medical that caused the transfer to break down. He had missed a majority of the 2015/16 season after rupturing his right ACL during international duty before suffering two further knee injuries during his time in France. The 31-year-old ended up staying one more season with his boyhood club before leaving the next summer to La Liga side Real Betis for a signficantly lower price of £18m. Fekir - who earned 25 France caps between 2015 and 2020 - spoke out on his failed move to the Reds in 2019 as he dispelled rumours that it was the cause of knee that ended his dreams of playing for Liverpool. "The truth, why the transfer to Liverpool did not work out, I don't even know it myself," Fekir said to French sports paper L'Équipe. "I passed my medical and after that, they decided not to sign me after all. What was said is not the truth," he insisted. "My knee is good - I had a quick medical check at Clairefontaine - my knee wasn't even mentioned. But the worst thing is the idea that people could suggest that it's because of my family that the transfer didn't happen. "It's a lie. But you have to live with it. The attempt to spread this pseudo physical problem into the world of course had an influence on other clubs potentially interested as well." Following the failed move, Fekir - who joined Al Jazira last year - had cut ties with his agent Jean-Pierre Bernes who claimed that it was the midfielder's knee issues that was the problem. Fekir would have joined Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri at Liverpool who went on to win the Champions League in their first season in Merseyside. An attacking midfielder has once again become a key target for the English champions who are closing in on securing Florian Wirtz. They've agreed a deal worth £116m, including add-ons, with Bayer Leverkusen to sign the German superstar. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Wrexham 'identify target' compared to Andres Iniesta after Ryan Reynolds' announcement
Wrexham 'identify target' compared to Andres Iniesta after Ryan Reynolds' announcement Hollywood-owned Wrexham are reportedly interested in signing a Championship club's captain, who once drew comparisons to Barcelona icons Andres Iniesta and Xavi Wrexham, owned by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, have been linked with a move to sign Barry Bannan (Image: Leon Bennett/The Hollywood Reporter via Getty Images ) Wrexham have been linked with a transfer move for a midfielder once likened to Barcelona greats Andres Iniesta and Xavi. Sheffield Wednesday star Barry Bannan has made 447 appearances for the club since arriving in 2015. However, off-pitch issues are plaguing the Owls, as some players have yet to receive their salary for May. The financial instability, coupled with a transfer embargo, has led to concerns that key players like Bannan may consider leaving. The 35-year-old is approaching the end of his contract at Hillsborough, which is set to draw to a close at the end of this month. The Red Dragons are now reportedly keeping tabs on the club captain's situation, as per The Irish Sun. Despite indications from the Yorkshire Post that Bannan is inclined to stay with Wednesday, Wrexham appear ready to offer a "top salary" to entice him. With Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at the helm, Wrexham recently gained promotion to the Championship and are eager to improve their team for the forthcoming season. Snatching Bannan, who garnered admiration during his early career from ex-Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier, would be quite the feat for them. Houllier, who sadly died in December 2020 at the age of 73, managed Aston Villa between September 2010 and June 2011, where he observed Bannan's rise from the youth ranks. He was a known admirer of Bannan, who saw increased first-team action under his guidance. "The Premier League has got more physical but it is not about a matter of size," Houllier said. "Obviously you need size in some positions but it's also a matter of commitment and physical commitment. Barry is competitive. It's a matter of getting into it. He has that." When asked if he believed Bannan could make the grade in the top flight, Houllier responded: "Yes, definitely. I had players at other clubs who were the same size and had wonderful careers. The top level is about skill, intelligence and desire. I don't think Xavi and Iniesta, who are outstanding players, are of huge size. They are intelligent, they have the skill, they have the desire – young Barry has all of that." Bannan clocked up 82 appearances for Villa between 2008 and 2013, before switching to join Crystal Palace. Despite spending two years with Palace, regular playing time proved elusive, leading to his move to Wednesday in August 2015. Bannan is a well-liked figure at Hillsborough and has also racked up 27 appearances for the Scotland national team throughout his career. St Mirren's top-six bid for next season just got harder, says Tony Fitzpatrick
The Buddies legend has pointed to teams such as Hearts, Hibernian and Aberdeen continuing to strengthen while Rangers and Celtic continue to pull away at the top of the Premiership. St Mirren are a top-six club now but achieving that status for the fourth year in a row will be the toughest task yet. That's the message from Buddies legend Tony Fitzpatrick who is eyeing up next season's Premiership campaign. The top flight will kick-off in just under seven weeks and clubs will be returning to pre-season training over the next fortnight. Saints fans will be hoping that the success under manager Stephen Robinson will continue but Fitzpatrick feels Scottish football's big guns have strengthened more than ever and the Paisley men will be in a top-six scrap. He told the Paisley Daily Express: 'No disrespect to the Premiership the last three or four years, I think it's not been the strongest. 'If I'm looking at it, you had a weak Hibs and Hearts and Aberdeen, really. But I think it's going to be the hardest year to get in the top six. Aberdeen are improving, Hibs are improving and Hearts are improving, with Rangers and Celtic continuing to steam ahead.' Fitzpatrick is confident Saints will retain their Premiership status and make the top six — but reckons it's in other competitions where they will thrive. He explained: 'We've got the core of the players plus the boys that will come in. I know that the first thing people say is, 'stay in the Premiership' and I'm sure we'll do that but it's going to be harder. 'I still think we'll get in the top six. But I've just got a real feeling in my gut that we're going to make Hampden in some capacity next season. 'I'm not trying to put pressure on people. I believe that — I've always believed that. The club we've got, the supporters we've got and especially the manager we've got now. 'I think that is Stephen's next aim as he's got us in the top six, he's got us into Europe. I think that's his next step. He got Motherwell into two cup finals but I just feel this time it is in the stars.' Two former Championship sides, Livingston and Falkirk, will join those in the Premiership for the new season. The Bairns will make their first appearance in the top flight since the SPFL formed in 2013. Fitzpatrick is delighted to see John McGlynn's Falkirk return to the top table and expects them to bring a big travelling support to the SMiSA Stadium. He added: 'I remember when we were in the Championship, Falkirk were always the one where every club looked up to to try and emulate. Having Falkirk in is really exciting as they will fill our away end and we will fill theirs. 'John is a fantastic manager and I see Stephen [McGinn] went there as their first-team coach so they'll be exciting. They'll add a lot to the Premiership but they'll see how tough it really is.'
