Sabah to regulate Semporna tourism activities for marine biodiversity

Borneo Post6 days ago
SEMPORNA (July 24): The State Government will ensure that tourism activities in Semporna are well-regulated and do not disrupt marine biodiversity but providing benefits and advantages to the people of Sabah.
This is in line with the focus on exploring, promoting and supporting the Blue Economy, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor.
However, he said conservation efforts needed strong support from all quarters, including government agencies, the private sector, NGOs, the local community, and the people of Sabah in general.
'I urge that we continue to protect Sabah's natural wealth so that the current and future
generations will continue to experience and enjoy the benefits and advantages of these natural resources,' he said during the World Biodiversity Day celebrations at the Dewan Arena Belia here today.
The Chief Minister's speech was delivered by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan.
Hajiji added that the State Government, on its part, would continue to implement development programmes that emphasise green sustainability by prioritising the responsible use and management of natural resources, as well as ensuring environmental protection, social well-being, and economic growth for future generations.
He also said the approval of the Climate Change and Carbon Governance Enactment 2025 at the recent State Assembly sitting had positioned Sabah as the nation's leader in environmental conservation and resilience against climate change.
He said the implementation of the Enactment would ensure the involvement of Sabah's native community and their rights are protected through the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedure.
'I wish to emphasise that the Sabah State Government is committed to protecting and preserving the state's natural resources, biodiversity and ecosystem,' he said.
He said the celebration's theme, 'Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development', is meaningful and underscored the crucial roles both elements play in preserving the health of the planet, enhancing human well-being and ensuring a sustainable future.
'This theme is also timely and serves as a reminder to humanity, especially the people of Sabah, not to be complacent when carrying out development activities without considering the sustainability of biodiversity, the well-being of animals, plants and ecosystems that bring benefits to our lives,' he said.
'By ensuring that nature is protected and valued, we not only safeguard biodiversity but also secure economic and social well-being for current and future generations.
'This concept aligns with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Sabah Biodiversity Strategy 2024–2034. At the same time, today's celebration and theme also reflect the aspirations of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development agenda, which is fundamentally anchored in promoting green practices and supporting sustainable development,' he said.
Hajiji said that Sabah is the first state in Malaysia to actively implement the Blue Economy concept under the SMJ development agenda.
Through this initiative, the Sabah State Government sees the potential to implement Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) in the Tawau waters as a source of renewable energy, he said.
'In addition, the Sabah Biodiversity Centre and Yayasan Petronas, in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), are also actively carrying out the Seaweed Mapping Project across Sabah. Well done!' he said.
He also assured that in line with the focus on exploring, promoting, and supporting the Blue Economy,

Decision for GRS to cooperate with PH made collectively - Hajiji

Hajiji KOTA KINABALU (July 30): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah's (GRS) decision to continue its cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming 17th Sabah state election (PRN17) was not made unilaterally, said its chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hajiji stressed that the matter had been discussed collectively among leaders within the coalition. 'We have already had discussions within GRS together with the party president. So, don't pay too much attention to what people are saying. There's just too much politicking in Sabah,' the Chief Minister said when met after an event here on Wednesday. His response followed speculation and concerns raised after he announced the continuation of GRS-PH cooperation during Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah's (Gagasan Rakyat) annual general assembly last weekend. It was earlier reported that senior GRS leaders were caught off guard by the announcement, claiming no Supreme Council meeting had been convened to formalise such an electoral pact. These leaders, however, have yet to issue an official statement and declined to comment publicly, stating they were not informed of any consensus reached at party level. In the same engagement, Hajiji was asked whether a GRS Supreme Council meeting would be called to address the matter. He replied that a meeting would be held in due course, but did not disclose a date. 'I will call the meeting later. I cannot inform the date now,' he said. Parti Bersatu Sabah secretary-general Datuk Julita Majungki said in a statement on Wednesday that the party would support Hajiji's decision to work with PH. Commenting on his working visit to Indonesia with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the 13th Annual Consultation in Jakarta on Tuesday, Hajiji said he had clearly conveyed the Sabah government's position regarding the D5 and D6 blocks off the Sulawesi Sea. 'The meeting was positive and is now at the stage of refining matters that are beneficial for Sabah,' he said. Malaysia and Indonesia reached several important agreements in the 13th Annual Consultation, including border issues, expanding economic cooperation and efforts to accelerate the implementation of new energy projects. Anwar said among the main achievements of the talks were the signing of four memorandums of understanding covering border issues including Pulau Sebatik, health, information and communication and internet governance.

Preserve National Image, Replace Faded Or Torn Flags

SEREMBAN, July 30 (Bernama) -- Premises owners in Negeri Sembilan have been urged to promptly take down faded or torn Jalur Gemilang and state flags and replace them with new ones, says Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun. Aminuddin said that people from all walks of life in the state should show respect for the national flag and uphold the country's image by flying it as a sign of patriotism. 'If the flag is already worn out and crumpled, replace it with a new one... we must have a sense of respect and love for the country, don't fly a damaged flag. 'So in conjunction with National Month, all citizens in the state are encouraged to purchase their own flags and fly them... don't just wait for free flags,' he told reporters after chairing the State Executive Council meeting at Wisma Negeri here today. He was commenting on the actions of several premises owners in the city who were still displaying tattered and torn flags, which spoiled the view and did not reflect the spirit of patriotism. Aminuddin said that in conjunction with the National Month and Malaysia Day, the state government will hold the Fly the Jalur Gemilang programme from Aug 1 to Sept 16. In another development, Aminuddin said the State Government was urging all telecommunications service providers (telcos) to take immediate action on abandoned cables in their maintenance areas to prevent them from posing a danger to the public. He called on all telco companies to look into the matter and remove unused cables to avoid theft and other damage. 'For example, there are cases of underground cable theft, and then they leave the underground duct open, which can be dangerous to road users, especially motorcyclists.
