Kolkata wards stay on edge after night of violence, locals blame outsiders for unrest near police stations

Time of India21 hours ago

People in Maheshtala stayed awake the whole of Wednesday night as fear of vandalism and looting continued to grip this locality where Hindus and Muslims have always lived peacefully. The locals claim that the rampage of the previous day was the handiwork of outsiders who destroyed people's vehicles, pelted stones on houses and looted shops even as policemen and the residents were attacked. And what baffles them the most is that the violence erupted in Kolkata's Ward No-7 which is in close proximity to Nadial police station in South 24 Parganas and Rabindranagar Police Station.
Shah Alam Shah, who owns a readymade garment shop in Akra Fatak Fultala area, blamed the police for not taking action promptly. "The incident happened at a stone's throw from the police station but no one intervened for the first few hours. Hindus and Muslims have been living together in harmony. We never attack each other," Shah told ET.
Opposite Alam's house, lives Piyali Devi, who said, "I was born here and have been living here for the past 50 years. I have never seen an incident like this. We have Muslim neighbours and the locals were not engaged in the attack. We are very scared. Stones were pelted and the attack continued for hours."

"I had a narrow escape. It all started when a mob of Muslims gathered and headed to the market. They vandalised my shop. The miscreants have broken the lock and destroyed everything. I have six family members and they are scared. There has been loss of over ₹50,000," Kuldeep Thakur, who runs a barber's shop, told ET. Thakur's shop was strewn with glasses, pieces of cosmetics bottles, scissors and broken chairs.
Gopal Basu and RajKamal Das, who work at a roadside eatery, said, "Our eatery was vandalised and we were beaten up. There were young boys in the mob who were around 12 to 15 years."

Kanye West makes surprise appearance at Diddy trial: A look at their complicated friendship

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West , made a brief but high-profile appearance at the Manhattan federal courthouse on Friday to show support for longtime friend Sean "Diddy" Combs, who is currently facing sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges. Dressed in white, Ye arrived around noon while court was in recess. Though he didn't enter the main courtroom, he observed proceedings via closed-circuit television in an overflow room for roughly 40 minutes. When asked if he was there to support Combs, Ye simply nodded and replied, 'Yes,' before quickly leaving in a black Mercedes sedan without taking further questions. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges alleging he exploited his fame and power over a 20-year span to commit serious crimes. Ye's appearance came just a day after a woman identified as 'Jane' wrapped up six days of harrowing testimony, including claims that she was coerced into sex acts while in a relationship with Combs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Are you ready to conquer a planet? Kanye and Diddy: From Mutual Admiration to Public Feud Live Events Ye and Diddy's relationship was once built on deep mutual respect. Kanye credited Diddy for inspiring his music and even his marriage to Kim Kardashian, saying, 'So many of my life choices, my wife choices... he inspired.' Diddy, in turn, said Ye reignited his passion for hip-hop after attending one of Ye's concerts in 2009. Their friendship took a turn in 2022 when Kanye released controversial 'White Lives Matter' shirts. Diddy criticized the move as 'tone deaf,' sparking a heated exchange of texts which Kanye posted on Instagram. Although they briefly crossed paths again at Rolling Loud in March 2024, Ye reportedly declined to speak with Diddy. Tensions resurfaced in April when Kanye appeared to reference the charges against Diddy in a remix of 'Like That,' rapping: "I just f—ed your b in a Sean John tank top." Despite the fallout, Ye's courtroom appearance signals a complex and enduring — if strained — bond. Whether this marks reconciliation or just a gesture of loyalty remains to be seen as Diddy's high-stakes trial unfolds.

Shoot-At-Sight Orders In Assam's Dhubri Amid Communal Unrest

Guwahati: The police in Assam's Dhubri issued shoot-at-sight orders after recovery of meat near a temple on Sunday flared communal tensions in the district. Announcing the order, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his government will not tolerate disturbances. Prohibitory orders were imposed in Dhubri on Monday to contains protests that erupted over the discovery of meat, but were withdrawn on Tuesday. He said the Rapid Action Force and Central Reserve Police Force will be deployed in Dhubri to keep the law and order situation in check. "Anybody coming out at night or throwing stones will be arrested. All those who have taken law into their hands will be dealt with severely," he said. Mr Sarma said that on the day after the Bakrid festival on June 7, a cow's head was found in front of a Hanuman temple, following which peace committees comprising both Hindus and Muslims appealed for harmony. The next day, a cow's head was again kept in front of the temple and stones were thrown at night, he added. The Chief Minister added that a Bangaldesh-backed organisation Nobin Bangla had put up provocative posters, highlighting the demand to include Dhubri in Bangladesh. "These posters indicates that a communal force backed by Bangladesh is active in Dhubri and they are working to destabilise the district," he further said. Mr Sarma also alleged that a "new beef mafia" has emerged in Dhubri, which procured thousands of animals just before Bakrid. ''This has come to my knowledge and I have ordered an inquiry into this. I have directed the authorities to arrest who has started this cattle trade,'' he said. He said that that he will stay in Dhubri on the day of Eid next year and guard the Hanuman temple through the night, if required.

Crypto income on I-T radar; department sends emails to individuals

The Income Tax Department has sent a communication to thousands of individuals who have undertaken cryptocurrency transactions but failed to reflect this income in their returns, official sources said Friday. These transactions pertain to assessment years 2023-24 and 2024-25, they said. The department and its policy-making body, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), suspect tax evasion and money laundering by certain "high-risk" people who are potentially using "unaccounted" income to invest in virtual digital assets (VDAs), commonly known as cryptocurrency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 23.7% Returns in last 5 years with Shriram Life's ULIP Shriram Life Insurance Undo Sources told PTI that the I-T Department has sent e-mails to thousands of defaulting people nudging them to file an updated Income Tax Return (ITR) if any income on account of crypto transactions has not been declared or mis-declared by them. This communication is part of the NUDGE (Non-intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable) campaign undertaken by the department with a philosophy of "trust taxpayers first" philosophy. Live Events According to section 115BBH of the Income Tax Act (provided by the Finance Act of 2022), a flat tax rate of 30 per cent (plus applicable surcharge and cess) is levied on income from crypto transfers. The provision does not allow deduction of any expenses except the cost of acquisition. Further, set-off of losses from crypto investment or trading is not allowed to be set off against any other income or for carry forward to subsequent years. Sources indicated that data analytics done by the tax department has shown that a "significant" number of people have not filed the Schedule VDA (for crypto) in their ITRs, and such people were offering tax on the income earned at a lower rate or claiming cost indexation. It is understood that the ITRs filed by taxpayers are being verified by the department with tax deducted at source (TDS) returns filed by various cryptocurrency exchanges (Virtual Asset Service Providers), and the defaulters may be selected for further "verification or scrutiny". This is the third in the NUDGE series campaign undertaken by the I-T Department and the CBDT, where they gently remind taxpayers about their liabilities. The previous two were related to seeking correct declarations on foreign assets and income by taxpayers and withdrawal of bogus claims of deduction under section 80GGC of the I-T Act.
