French couple found safe after getting lost hiking
SANDAKAN: A French couple was found safe after getting lost while hiking at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) in Sandakan today.
Santarelli Antolne Pierre, 36, and his wife, Girodet Charlene, 36, were located by RDC rangers who were part of the search and rescue (SAR) operation at 3.08pm.
The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Centre (PGO) received an emergency call about the missing hikers at 1.24pm.
"The caller, who was one of the victims, reported that they had gotten lost in the forest while hiking," a department spokesman said in a statement.
A team from the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station, along with RDC rangers, was deployed to the couple's location, approximately seven kilometres from the entrance by land.
The spokesman added that RDC rangers, who were also involved in the operation by boat, successfully located the couple.
Both were confirmed safe and were taken to Kampung Bambangan via the shorter sea route, as it was just two kilometres away compared to the longer land route.
They were later transported back to the RDC by the Forestry Department.

RANAU (June 6): The Sabah State Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) successfully conducted a three-day Mount Kinabalu Evacuation Simulation Exercise from June 3 to 5. Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Mohd Pisar Aziz said that the exercise not only commemorates the tragic earthquake incident that occurred on June 5, 2015, but also serves as a platform for disaster preparedness in high-risk locations such as Mount Kinabalu. 'The exercises starts from Panalaban to the Low's Peak summit of Mount Kinabalu involving 49 participants in the mountainous area and 20 participants at the foot of the mountain. 'Overall, the exercise simulation was a success,' he said during the closing ceremony of the Mount Kinabalu Evacuation Simulation Exercise and in conjunction with the 2025 Mount Kinabalu Earthquake Commemoration Ceremony. Mohd Pisar also expressed his appreciation to all agencies and parties involved directly and indirectly in making the exercise a success, including Sabah Parks, Sabah National Security Council, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Royal Malaysian Police, KEPSAS, APM, Mountain Malim Gunung Association, Porter Association, Sutera Sanctuary Lodge, KOKTAS, Mountain Torq and Sabapak Eco Berhad. Mohd Pisar said the commitment and efficiency shown by all participants served as an example for the implementation of such exercises in the future. He said the 2015 earthquake that claimed 18 lives including climbers and mountain guides, and injuring many climbers had triggered a major change in the safety approach in the Mount Kinabalu area. 'Such exercises like this will test the coordination, communication and emergency response systems between agencies, in addition to educating the local community including tourism operators, mountain guides, porters and residents to be better prepared. 'I hope these exercises can be continued periodically so that the level of preparedness of all parties remains at an optimal level. 'We cannot be complacent or forgetful because disasters know no time and place. Continue the commitment to making Mount Kinabalu not just a superior tourist destination, but a safe area that is ready to face any challenge,' he said.

The 22-year-old, in a Grand Slam main draw for the first time, beat Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals having knocked out world number three Jessica Pegula in the previous round. Her WTA ranking belies the true level of Boisson, who was hovering around the 150th place when she sustained a serious knee injury a year ago. Now that she's fit, she is firing and has her eyes firmly fixed on the biggest prize. "For sure, every tennis player dreams of winning a Slam - and for a French player, Roland Garros even more so. I'll go for it because my dream is to win the final, not the semi-final,' Boisson, who will at least break into the world's top 70 next week, told a press conference. Katoto came up through PSG's academy and became the club's leading goalscorer with 180 goals in 223 games, winning the Premiere Ligue in 2021 as well as three Coupe de France titles. The 26-year-old has made 53 appearances for France's national team, scoring 37 goals. She becomes the first signing under new coach Jonatan Giraldez, who was appointed on Monday to replace the Australia-bound Joe Montemurro.
