Five killed in China's Xinjiang after cable on suspension bridge snaps
The aftermath of a suspension bridge collapse in Yili, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China, in this screengrab reportedly taken on Aug 6 from a social media video.
BEIJING - Five people were killed after a cable on a suspension bridge snapped in north-western China's Xinjiang region, causing them to fall off the bridge, state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Aug 7 .
The incident, which took place at 6.18pm on Aug 6 in a sightseeing area in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, injured a further 24 people, Xinhua said.
The scenic area has been closed while the incident is being investigated, Xinhua said.
Videos circulating on social media, verified by Reuters, show a low-hanging suspension bridge tilted to one side with handrails made from cables dangling between the walkway and the ground below. Part of the bridge hangs over a river.
The videos also show at least two people lying on the ground below the bridge.
In one of the videos, a casualty was put onto a wooden plank, while another video shows people carrying the makeshift stretcher away from the scene.
The 65 sq km area, called Xiata, boasts a natural landscape including a mountain pass, a valley, and a river as well as cultural remains such as ruins of an ancient town, public information shows.

Russia files new assault charges against US citizen jailed for attacking law enforcement officers

REUTERS/Vladimir Lavrov/File Photo MOSCOW - Russian prosecutors have filed fresh charges against Robert Gilman, a U.S. citizen and ex-Marine serving an eight-year sentence for assaulting law enforcement officers and a prison official, court documents show. Gilman, 30, was first arrested in 2022 for a purportedly drunken assault on a Russian police officer. His sentence has been extended several times following convictions for assault against prison officials and a state investigator during his incarceration. Gilman previously told a court he was forced to use violence after the prison inspector had caused pain to his genitalia and after the investigator had insulted his father. The new charges, filed in late July in a court in Voronezh in southern Russia, also concern assault against prison staff. Gilman could not be reached for comment and his lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Kommersant newspaper reported that Gilman's defence team had requested he receive a more lenient sentence, citing an unspecified mental health condition. The next court hearing in his case is scheduled for August 25. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Thailand says another soldier injured by landmine near Cambodia
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox FILE PHOTO: Armoured personnel carriers (APC) are seen on a road near Thailand-Cambodia's border in Sisaket province, the day after the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand agreed to a ceasefire on Monday in a bid to bring an end to their deadliest conflict in more than a decade and ahead of military negotiations, Thailand, July 29, 2025. REUTERS/Athit Perawongmetha/File Photo BANGKOK - A Thai soldier was injured by a landmine near the Cambodian border on Tuesday, the Thai army said, days after the Southeast Asian neighbours agreed a ceasefire following last month's deadly five-day conflict. The soldier's left ankle was severely injured when he stepped on the mine while patrolling along a routine border route about 1 km (0.62 miles) from Ta Moan Thom temple in Thailand's Surin province, the army said in a statement. The soldier is being treated at a hospital, it said. The incident is clear evidence that Cambodia has violated the ceasefire as well as international agreements like the Ottawa Convention against landmines, Thai army spokesman Major-General Winthai Suvaree said in the statement. It was the fourth time in a few weeks that Thai soldiers have been injured by mines during patrols along the border. On Saturday, three soldiers were injured by a landmine in an area between Thailand's Sisaket and Cambodia's Preah Vihear provinces. Two earlier incidents led to the downgrading of diplomatic relations and triggered the clashes. Bangkok accused Cambodia of planting landmines on the Thai side of the disputed border that injured soldiers on July 16 and July 23. Phnom Penh denied it had placed any new mines, saying the soldiers had veered off agreed routes and triggered old landmines left over from decades of war. It said on Saturday that it was a "proud state party" to the Ottawa Convention. Thailand and Cambodia have bickered for decades over undemarcated points along their 817-km (508-mile) land border, with ownership of the ancient Hindu temples Ta Moan Thom and the 11th-century Preah Vihear central to the disputes. The latest clashes that started on July 24 were the worst fighting between the countries in more than a decade, and involved exchanges of artillery fire and jet fighter sorties that killed at least 43 and left over 300,000 people displaced on both sides. The fragile ceasefire has been holding since Thailand and Cambodia agreed last week to allow observers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to inspect disputed border areas, ensuring that hostilities do not resume. SINGAPORE - An off-duty Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officer died on the morning of Aug 12 following an accident involving a motorcycle and two vans at the junction of Punggol Way and Sumang Link. The police and the SCDF said they were alerted to the accident at about 6.45am. The 50-year-old male motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic, and his male pillion rider, 15, was taken conscious to KK Women's and Children's hospital, the authorities said. Two male van drivers, aged 40 and 54, are assisting with police investigations, they added. In a composite video posted on Singapore Roads Facebook page at around 12.30pm, a few people can be seen holding up a large white sheet of cloth in front of a white minivan to shield the public from viewing the deceased. In the later part of the video, a blue tent can be seen alongside a motorcycle. Police vehicles and officers can also be seen at the accident site. 'SCDF extends our deepest condolences to the family of the late officer. SCDF is in contact with family and is providing assistance during this time of grief,' SCDF said. Top stories Swipe. Select.
