Five killed in China's Xinjiang after cable on suspension bridge snaps

BEIJING - Five people were killed after a cable on a suspension bridge snapped in north-western China's Xinjiang region, causing them to fall off the bridge, state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Aug 7 .
The incident, which took place at 6.18pm on Aug 6 in a sightseeing area in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, injured a further 24 people, Xinhua said.
The scenic area has been closed while the incident is being investigated, Xinhua said.
Videos circulating on social media, verified by Reuters, show a low-hanging suspension bridge tilted to one side with handrails made from cables dangling between the walkway and the ground below. Part of the bridge hangs over a river.
The videos also show at least two people lying on the ground below the bridge.
In one of the videos, a casualty was put onto a wooden plank, while another video shows people carrying the makeshift stretcher away from the scene.
The 65 sq km area, called Xiata, boasts a natural landscape including a mountain pass, a valley, and a river as well as cultural remains such as ruins of an ancient town, public information shows.

The soldier's left ankle was severely injured when he stepped on the mine while patrolling along a routine border route about 1 km (0.62 miles) from Ta Moan Thom temple in Thailand's Surin province, the army said in a statement. Bangkok accused Cambodia of planting landmines on the Thai side of the disputed border that injured soldiers on July 16 and July 23. Phnom Penh denied it had placed any new mines, saying the soldiers had veered off agreed routes and triggered old landmines left over from decades of war. It said on Saturday that it was a "proud state party" to the Ottawa Convention. Thailand and Cambodia have bickered for decades over undemarcated points along their 817-km (508-mile) land border, with ownership of the ancient Hindu temples Ta Moan Thom and the 11th-century Preah Vihear central to the disputes. SINGAPORE - An off-duty Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officer died on the morning of Aug 12 following an accident involving a motorcycle and two vans at the junction of Punggol Way and Sumang Link. The police and the SCDF said they were alerted to the accident at about 6.45am. The 50-year-old male motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic, and his male pillion rider, 15, was taken conscious to KK Women's and Children's hospital, the authorities said. Two male van drivers, aged 40 and 54, are assisting with police investigations, they added. In a composite video posted on Singapore Roads Facebook page at around 12.30pm, a few people can be seen holding up a large white sheet of cloth in front of a white minivan to shield the public from viewing the deceased. In the later part of the video, a blue tent can be seen alongside a motorcycle. Police vehicles and officers can also be seen at the accident site.
