Berger stars in shootout as Germany overcome early red card to fell France at Euro 2025

The Guardian2 days ago
Germany produced a heroic performance with only 10 players to knock out a stunned France side after a penalty shootout and progress to the Euro 2025 semi-finals on a night of compelling drama in Basel.
The record eight-time European champions had to play the vast majority of the contest with one player fewer than the French but defended doggedly throughout extra time and then won the shootout 6-5 to book a semi-final meeting with the world champions Spain on Wednesday in Zurich. The goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger was Germany's heroine, not only in the shootout, but with an astonishing save in extra time.
Germany's fate had looked bleak in the 13th minute when Kathrin Hendrich was shown a straight red card for pulling Griedge Mbock's hair inside the penalty area. It was a blatant, cynical foul and frankly bizarre behaviour from the 33-year-old Hendrich, one of the most experienced players on the pitch. Grace Geyoro duly stepped up and did what scarcely anybody has been able to do in this tournament so far and converted her penalty. Berger got a hand to Geyoro's spot-kick but could not keep it out and the midfielder became France's all-time top scorer at Women's European Championships.
For the remainder of the first half, Germany defied their numerical disadvantage with a brave performance of counterattacking football and they equalised when Sjoeke Nüsken darted to the near post, unmarked, to meet Klara Bühl's corner and loop an excellent header into the far corner.
France thought they had scored an outstanding team goal before half-time, when Delphine Cascarino's instinctive backheel into the net rounded off a flowing, pass move, but Cascarino had been in an offside position. Another offside flag, decision, confirmed by the video assistant referee, also ruled out a French 'goal' early in the second half, when Geyoro tucked in on the rebound from Berger's close-range save from Marie-Antoinette Katoto, but Maëlle Lakrar was offside and deemed to have interfered with play, much to the frustration of France and Geyoro, who had run to celebrate with her jubilant teammates next to the substitutes bench.
Germany were doing an excellent job of stifling their opponents with a valiant defensive display and then – suddenly – at the other end, they were awarded a penalty when Selma Bacha clumsily fouled the superb Jule Brand. Cue German joy in the stands, but it was short-lived as Pauline Peyraud-Magnin saved Nüsken's penalty, which had been fired slightly to the left of centre, and a relatively kind height for the keeper.

Berger produced the save of the tournament so far in the first 15 extra minutes, wowing everybody in the stadium as she somehow leaped backwards to make a one-handed save to prevent an unintentional own goal from her teammate Janina Minge, with Berger magnificently managing to claw the ball off the line when it had been behind her body. She was magnificent again in the shootout, making two saves – including the decisive sudden-death strike from Alice Sombath – to complete a stunning result. On the way she also scored one of her own.
The result ensured that France's long wait for a first major trophy in the women's game will continue, as they exit at the quarter-final stage of this competition for the fourth time in the past five editions of the Women's Euros. The teams also met in the semi-finals of the Euros three years ago in Milton Keynes, when the Germans emerged victorious after a talismanic performance from their now-retired striker Alexandra Popp, but this was supposedly a new France, a fresher France, and more technically-impressive France team and one which had enjoyed three wins out of three to finish top of Group D, scoring 11 group-stage goals in the process. Yet they could not break this stubborn Germany defence down and they will surely see this as the greatest of all their many missed opportunities down the years.

Liverpool set to sign Hugo Ekitike after Alexander Isak snub

Liverpool have agreed a £69m deal with Eintracht Frankfurt to sign striker Hugo Ekitike. The transfer fee could rise to £79m with add-ons, making Ekitike Liverpool's fourth summer signing; Liverpool were briefly interested in signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. The French forward is set to undergo a medical and sign a six-year contract, with personal terms not expected to be an issue. Ekitike, 23, scored 22 goals last season, including 15 in the Bundesliga, and preferred Liverpool over Newcastle. This acquisition will push Liverpool's summer spending towards the £250m mark, following other significant signings.

England vs Italy betting tips: Euro 2025 semi-final prediction and bet builder

England take on Italy in the semi-finals of Euro 2025 on Tuesday night, with the Lionesses looking to book back-to-back European Championship finals. England came through a dramatic penalty shootout win over Sweden to take their place in the last four, with Lucy Bronze and Hannah Hampton among the heroines as they overcame a 2-0 deficit from the first half. But Sarina Wiegman will know that her side needs to be far better if they're going to have any hope of winning the competition, and that starts on Tuesday against Italy. Though the Italians – who scraped through against Norway with a 90th-minute winner – are not quite as accomplished a side as Sweden, the Lionesses will be wary of underestimating them, with the Azzurre playing their first semi-final in this competition just three years after turning professional. Nevertheless, it is England who are the favourites to go through in Geneva, with football betting sites offering Women's Euros odds of 1/4 for the Lionesses to qualify versus 11/4 for the Italians. England vs Italy prediction: Lionesses to make the final Though the Lionesses are firm favourites ahead of the semi-final, they will be wary of the Italians, who will be playing their first semi-final in this tournament for 28 years. In fact, the country's national federation only approved professional status for their players in 2022, with this semi-final marking the next step in a remarkable rise for the Azzurre. Though they will be understandably fired up, the fact remains that the squad doesn't possess the same level of talent as that of the Lionesses, as shown in the draw with Portugal and narrow win over Belgium. But while England should certainly qualify for the final, they are unlikely to have it all their own way, as shown against Sweden. The Lionesses have conceded goals in all but one of their matches at the tournament so far, with the goals against Wales and Sweden particularly worrying from a defensive point of view. It is perhaps unlikely that England will make as slow a start as they did in the quarter-final, but Italy could well capitalise if they do. Their own recent draw with Sweden in May – despite a squad with less talent than the Swedish – shows that they can punch above their weight. To that end, we're going with a wager on England to win but both teams to score, which is offered at 11/5 with various betting sites. England vs Italy tips: Russo to play key role in semi-final Though Alessia Russo has emerged as England's key goalscoring threat, her performances against the Netherlands and Wales illustrated why she has become such a key member of Wiegman's side, with the Arsenal striker proving an irreplaceable number nine with her hold-up and link play. Though Russo was unable to score against Sweden, she frequently played a part in England's most promising attacking moves and subsequently dispatched her penalty in the shootout. Though the 26-year-old has scored just one goal so far in the tournament (against Wales) she has registered three assists and could get more opportunities against the Azzurre, and perhaps this is her moment to steal the headlines once again, as she did at this stage in 2022 with that memorable backheel. With that in mind, we're going for Russo to score or assist against Italy, which is offered at 4/5 with William Hill. England vs Italy Bet Builder Tips We've pulled together an England vs Italy bet builder using the above predictions. When combined on one slip it pays out at 16/5 with Bet365. Leg 1: England to win Despite some nervy moments against Sweden, England's overall quality should give them the edge again in Geneva. They've reached this stage for a reason and are strong favourites to book a second straight Euros final. Leg 2: Both teams to score England have conceded in three of their four games at Euro 2025, while Italy have found the net in every match so far. With both teams likely to create chances, BTTS looks a solid inclusion. Leg 3: Alessia Russo to score or assist Russo has been central to England's attacking play all tournament. Her strength in link-up play and presence in the box gives her every chance of registering a goal or assist in this semi-final clash. England get boost ahead of Euro semi as captain Williamson trains

ZURICH, July 21 (Reuters) - England captain Leah Williamson trained with the team on Monday in a big boost to the squad ahead of their Euro 2025 semi-final against Italy on Tuesday. Williamson limped off with an ankle injury late in Thursday's dramatic quarter-final victory over Sweden which was decided by a penalty shootout. Although there had been questions around Williamson's fitness, England defender Esme Morgan had said the team were "very optimistic Leah will be fine." Jess Carter, who on Sunday announced she would be stepping back from social media after she was the target of racist abuse, also trained. Defending champions England are appearing in their sixth consecutive European Championship semi-final.
