Notting Hill Carnival opening ceremony sees revellers throw paint and powder - here's why
Notting Hill Carnival is one of the UK's most iconic events, drawing visitors from across the world to West London for a vibrant Caribbean celebration that unites communities. It's the one time of year you'll see the streets jam-packed with people from all walks of life, moving to the rhythm of steel pans, soca and reggae.
For many, Carnival means choosing between Sunday's family-friendly parade or Monday's adults-only party, usually arriving around midday to soak it all in. But the real action starts much earlier - in fact, on Sunday, celebrations kick off at 6am with J'ouvert.
While J'ouvert is a huge tradition across the Caribbean, many outside the culture don't know about it - here's everything you need to know ahead of this year's carnival, which is set to have new crowd control measures in place.

What is J'ouvert?
J'ouvert comes from the French Creole phrase "jour ouvert", meaning 'daybreak' or 'opening of the day.' In Caribbean communities, it's usually pronounced 'ju-vay.'
The tradition is rooted in Trinidad and Tobago, where pre-dawn celebrations became a space for resistance against colonial authorities trying to suppress Carnival. After slavery was abolished, freed people used music, dance and masquerade as a joyful expression of freedom and cultural pride. Over time, this merged into the spirited, defiant and colourful J'ouvert we see today.

Think Carnival - but messier. Mas bands take to the streets throwing paint, chocolate, and coloured powder into the crowd. If you're going, wear clothes you don't mind getting ruined. The atmosphere is filled with the sweet sounds of steel pans and the infectious energy of soca music, creating an atmosphere that's pure joy.
You'll also spot traditional masquerade characters, including those painted black in the 'Jab' tradition, a symbolic nod to the history of slavery. A source told The Mirror that Alex and Kieran Hayler – who was with Katie from 2013 to March 2021 – are teaming up with lawyers to block her from featuring them on the show. A source told The Mirror: 'They feel like they have been backed into a corner and have no choice. 'They just want her to stop trashing them, and can't believe she is being given a platform.' Another source, close to Kieran, said that 'enough is enough' and the men are just looking to move on with their lives but 'can't trust anything' that Katie says. A spokesman for Kieran added: 'We are keeping all our options open. I can confirm Alex Reid is on the same page.' The outlet reported that they have been in contact via an intermediary over the documentary, which is being made by Louis Theroux's production company Mindhouse. It's due to be aired by Sky but lawyers for the pair are said to be urging the broadcaster to reconsider. Last week Kieran – who is dad to Katie's youngest kids Bunny, 11, and Jett, 12 – issued a public apology to Princess after she admitted: 'I wish I could have had a happier childhood.' Alex Reid leaks bankrupt Katie Price counting cash video in latest twist in saga
The footage leaked by Katie's ex Alex Reid shows her and daughter Princess counting cash and has been passed to her bankruptcy trustee, the Mirror understands. Reid has vowed that 'the truth will now be heard' Reality star Katie Price is facing fresh questions over her murky finances as a video emerges of her waving a wad of cash while bankrupt. Lounging on a sofa the glamour model, bankrupted twice over debts totalling more than £3m, says that she is 'enjoying counting' the pile of cash in front of her, saying "there's loads here … I'm just sorting it out". Asked by her daughter Princess if she would contribute towards her school fees and those of her second child with ex-husband Peter Andre, Price says 'Your dad can sit on that' and lifting a middle finger. Wearing white jodhpurs and sat next to a Christmas tree, she adds: 'Does he go on about it a lot? Well it's tough because I'm in bankruptcy to next May now.' Price also refers to a property - 'my London flat' - which she claims to own but which does not appear to have been traced by her bankruptcy trustees. The video was released today by Price's ex, former cage fighter Alex Reid', who said in a statement that 'the truth will now be heard'. The Mirror understands that the one minute and 38 second video, believed to have been filmed in late 2020, has been sent to Price's bankruptcy trustee who continues to 'seek realisations from various third parties'. Price has been celebrating the end of six years of 'hell' after being discharged from two bankruptcies and claiming it is a 'great achievement'. But a source said: 'A number of people have said that Katie deals in cash but this appears to be the first solid proof. There are lots of people owed a lot of money who now realise they are unlikely to ever get it. Katie gloating about it has stuck in the throat but this is not over.' Price was bankrupted twice - first in 2019 over debts totalling £3.5m, including £970,639 to HMRC and then again last March over a second £761,994 unpaid HMRC demand for money earned while she was already bankrupt. Creditors include Alex Reid who is owed £175,000 in High Court damages and costs he was awarded after Price revealed a sex tape he says was filmed without his consent. In the video, Price is heard claiming that she has 'extended' the bankruptcy 'because Alex Reid wants money from me and he won't be able to get it ... he's an a***hole". In a video statement released today, Reid said: 'Over the years you have seen countless stories by Katie Price directed at me, Peter, Keiran and others. Today I want to be clear. I am spear-heading a campaign to expose the truth. This isn't about gossip but about evidence. It's not about rumour, it's about reality. After years of silence, the time has finally come to reveal all.' He is seen watching the leaked video of Price and reacting, with comments like "this is unbelievable", "she just admitted she lied" and "has my legal team seen this?" Price said earlier this year on The Katie Price Show podcast: 'I'm not bankrupt anymore! I'm out of it, I'm out of both of them. The last six years have been hell - mentally and personally - everything has been hell. I've worked so hard to communicate and get rid of what caused all the trouble and I'm out of it. It's such a nice feeling not to be bankrupt anymore. I'm in control of everything now.' Farheen Qureshi, who was made Price's bankruptcy trustee in April 2023, told the Mirror: 'You should be aware that, notwithstanding that Ms Price has been discharged from both her first and second Bankruptcies, both Bankruptcies are still live and continuing and, in my capacity as her Trustee, I am seeking realisations from various third parties for the respective Bankruptcy estates. I would not wish to prejudice in any way either the outcome of that hearing or the further investigations being undertaken.' Alex Reid's post today marks the latest escalation between Price and her exes. Last week, on Instagram, Peter Andre posted: "For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today. He revealed that Princess and Junior, his children with Price, were put in his care by the family courts. He also cited court cases in 2011 and 2014 where Price had to pay damages over "false claims'. He added: 'The same falsehoods are being repeated today. Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months." In response, mum-of-five Price she would not be drawn into 'tit for tat comments' but added: 'I know I will always be seen as a sinner. That's fair. I allowed myself to fall into a reliance on drugs and alcohol. At times I was not the mother I should have been while I struggled with mental illness. I have been at times a poor friend, an awful sibling, and an untrustworthy partner. I've self-medicated, been unfaithful, damaged myself and those that I love.'

Police officers warned against dancing ahead of Notting Hill carnival
For George Michael, it was guilty feet that left him unable to dance. For Eddy Grant, a world full of problems left him rooted to the spot as the music played. But for police officers amid the sound systems at this weekend's Notting Hill carnival, it is orders from on high that dictate that no matter how the beat moves them, they are banned from dancing with revellers. Down the decades the scenes of officers strutting their stuff was seen as a cheesy but welcome attempt at repairing strained community relations. But in a statement on Monday, the Metropolitan police made clear it feels a twerk or rhythmic shake of the hips may distract or slow down the 7,000 officers deployed to the carnival from responding to outbreaks of crime. The carnival is the biggest annual challenge for the Met. For the overwhelming majority of the more than 1 million people attending it is the biggest celebration of Caribbean culture in Europe, and one of the biggest entertainment gatherings in the world. But the carnival's two-day takeover of the streets of west London is dogged by serious crimes. Last year there were two murders and more than 60 officers were injured, as well as constant fears among police commanders of a catastrophic crush with so many people packed in narrow streets. One police source justified the dancing ban, which was first implemented in 2019, and said: 'Carnival is a fantastic event but it is a serious event.' In a statement the Met confirmed the dancing ban, and a spokesperson said: 'Carnival is an iconic and spectacular event which attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year to party and celebrate Caribbean culture. 'But it is also an event where there have been numerous concerns about crowd safety and crime. As a consequence, almost 7,000 officers will be deployed to this year's event. They are there to keep revellers safe, not to join in the revelling. 'We want officers to positively engage with the carnivalgoers while staying vigilant at all times and remaining able to respond and intervene swiftly as necessary. They can't do this if they are dancing. 'The standards of behaviour expected as part of the policing operation will be communicated clearly before the event, just as they have been in recent years.' Notting Hill carnival dates back almost seven decades, starting as a celebration of resistance in an openly racist Britain. This year police will controversially deploy live facial recognition systems in the approaches to the carnival, hoping to catch wanted suspects and deter people attending who want to cause trouble. The carnival starts on Sunday with a day for children and families, and its busiest day is usually bank holiday Monday. It is by far the Met's biggest policing operation of the year, taking place in Notting Hill, west London, with hundreds of thousands of people packed into narrow urban streets.
