UAE showcases women empowerment model at UN forum
Speaking at the UN gathering, the UAE delegation showcased the country's model of inclusive development—built on empowering women, supporting families and driving progress through equality in education, work, and leadership.
The delegation highlighted national milestones, including equal pay legislation, constitutional protections for gender equality, and the rising number of women in leadership—now making up 50 per cent of the Federal National Council and 26 per cent of Cabinet positions.
Women also account for nearly half of STEM graduates and 80 per cent of the scientific team behind the Emirates Mars Mission.
The UAE also emphasised its global efforts, including programmes like Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak's Women in Peace and Security Initiative, offering its experience to help accelerate gender progress worldwide.
On the sidelines of the forum, the UAE Consulate and National SDG Secretariat hosted a roundtable focused on innovation in promoting gender equality beyond 2030.
The event tackled the digital gender divide, care economy reforms, and boosting women in leadership—with voices from international experts, including ministers, UN leaders and private sector figures.
Officials stressed that empowering communities, especially women and families, remains both the foundation and future of sustainable development.

‘Last lifelines' are collapsing in Gaza: UN chief
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday condemned the "accelerating breakdown of humanitarian conditions" in Gaza after more than 21 months of Israel's war with Hamas. "The last lifelines keeping people alive are collapsing," his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement. The United Nations chief "deplores the growing reports of children and adults suffering from malnutrition." More than two dozen Western countries Monday also called for an immediate end to the war, saying that suffering had "reached new depths" as Israel's military expanded its operations to Gaza's central city of Deir el-Balah. "The Secretary-General notes that the intensification of hostilities in recent days comes as the humanitarian system is being impeded, undermined and endangered," Dujarric said. "A new evacuation order in parts of Deir el-Balah -- home to tens of thousands -- pushes people into more desperate conditions and further displacement and restricts the United Nations' ability to deliver life-saving aid." Zelensky names over 12 new ambassadors, including envoy to UAE, in rejig
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed over a dozen new ambassadors on Monday, during a big shakeup that has seen him replace top Cabinet officials and envoys to shore up relations with Washington and isolate Russia internationally. The new envoys named on Monday include ambassadors to Nato members Belgium, Canada, Estonia and Spain, as well as major donor Japan and regional heavyweights South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Zelensky launched a major government reshuffle last week, promoting Yulia Svyrydenko, 39, who had served as economy minister and is well known in Washington, to head the Cabinet as prime minister. Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna is set to become Ukraine's new envoy to the United States, as Ukraine seeks to mend ties with the Trump administration. In remarks to the diplomatic corps released by his office, Zelensky said envoys needed to support "everything that causes Russia pain for its war". "While the content of our relationship with America has transformed following the change in administration, the goal remains unchanged: Ukraine must withstand Russia's strikes," Zelensky said. The HLPF is organised by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and serves as the UN's central platform for reviewing progress on SDGs. Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange and Chair of the National Committee on SDGs, welcomed high-level attendees to the launch event. Dignitaries present included: Savanna Maziya, Minister of ICT, Kingdom of Eswatini Victor Verdon, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paraguay Seema Sami Iskander Bahouth, Executive Director, UN Women Eliot Minchenberg, Director, UNESCO Office for Communication in New York Benjiran Herani Tajuddin, Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to the UN Tsvai Yelma Sabo, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the UN Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, UAE Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered the opening speech. The report, created by the National Committee on SDGs 2025, is based on the outcomes of the ministerial session held at the World Government Summit (WGS) 2025. It also includes insights from the 2045 SDG roundtable at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025 and the UAE-led 2045 SDG Global Survey. The report is titled 'Envisioning 2045: Comprehensive Pathways towards Sustainable Development.' It outlines five key priorities: Redefining SDGs for 2045 Future-proofing societies and economies Enhancing global leadership cooperation Accelerating development transformation Establishing global commitment to future goals The UAE delegation presented survey findings from 55 countries across diverse age groups and academic fields. The results showed that 94.7% of respondents supported expanding the definition of progress beyond economic indicators. Also, 85.4% agreed that citizen involvement boosts SDG success, and 70% supported cross-sector collaboration in sustainable development. The report stresses the importance of AI, circular economies, and responsible innovation. It calls for embedding foresight in policy and involving youth, women, and vulnerable groups in shaping future goals. The report also reflects on the SDGs in Action initiative, launched in 2016 at WGS in Dubai, as a vital platform for advancing global dialogue. At the HLPF, the UAE reaffirmed its commitment to five focus SDGs for 2025: SDG3 (health), SDG5 (gender equality), SDG8 (economic growth), SDG14 (life below water), and SDG17 (partnerships). These efforts revolve around innovation, partnerships, and strategic insight. Abdulla Nasser Lootah described the report as a critical milestone in global sustainable development. He said it builds on evidence and practical solutions and seeks to define a forward-looking SDG framework. He stated, 'This report reflects the UAE's approach – anticipating challenges, strengthening global partnerships, and designing innovative solutions grounded in research, data, and evidence.' Lootah revealed that although official UN discussions on post-2030 goals will begin in 2027, the UAE started engaging international leaders in 2023. He highlighted that over 170 global leaders have participated in shaping the 2045 vision through platforms like the SDGs in Action Forum. The report stands as a strategic contribution to the global development agenda, reinforcing the UAE's leadership in promoting innovation, foresight, and inclusive progress toward 2045.
