Hot weather today; Increasing thunderstorm chances ahead

Good morning KELOLAND! It's a cool start to the morning, but much warmer weather is ahead today for much of the region. Highs stayed in the 60s in much of eastern KELOLAND yesterday, with Watertown staying at just 59. Lower 80s returned to the Rapid City area, with 90s likely today. We think Sioux Falls will be close to 90 degrees later today with hazy sunshine expected. Here's a closer look at what you can expect the next few days. First, temperatures today will turn hot ahead of the cold front dropping into northern KELOLAND this afternoon. You can see widespread 90s for many locations. Next, watch the movement of that front by tomorrow morning. We think that front will drop south of Sioux Falls, which means much cooler weather for tomorrow. Also, a band of scattered rain should develop along a Spearfish-Pierre-Huron-Marshall line during the day. We can't rule out a chance of rain near Sioux Falls as well. Stronger t-storms development may take place in clusters south of I-90, with a marginal risk of severe weather. We expect a new round of mainly nocturnal thunderstorms to develop in southeastern KELOLAND overnight into Thursday morning. Then, a new round of thunderstorms should develop in western SD during the day, with thunderstorms spreading east Thursday afternoon and evening. Locally heavy thunderstorms are possible along with a marginal risk of severe weather. You can see those marginal risk maps below. Rain totals through Friday should be significant in parts of KELOLAND. For example, the range of 1-2″ looks very likely for Sioux Falls, with locally higher totals likely where thunderstorms train or cross over the same areas more than once. We'll continue to monitor the high-resolutions details as we add more information to these rain forecasts. The numbers on average are not as high for western SD, but we still expect pockets of showers and thunderstorms starting tomorrow. Here are the details of the forecast. Strong storms and flooding across the Twin Tiers. Rain stops Tuesday, but returns midweek.

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Rain is back in the forecast for part of the week. So get ready for that. There is a chance to dry out but Father's Day is looking pretty wet for now. Heavy rain showers and thunderstorms continue to move into the Twin tiers this evening and into the early morning hours too. There is a cold front that moves across the region brining us localized flash flooding that could close roads at low-water crossings. The heavy rain moves eastward through the overnight hours, however, further east the rainfall rates should decrease with the loss of instability because of the loss of heat from the sun after sunset. Some spots have seen warnings for both flash flooding and thunder storms with damaging winds this evening. Locally heavy rainfall and flash flooding are still possible due to all the recent rainfall. However, we are in for a better Tuesday afternoon. Drier conditions will take hold Tuesday and hang on through at least Wednesday. Don't get used to it. There is a potent shortwave and surface cold front about to cross the region mid-week and we stand to get more showers to wrap up the week. Please remember to turn around don't drown!
