Exclusive-Air Canada and striking union are holding discussions Monday night, source says
(Reuters) -Air Canada and its union representing 10,000 flight attendants are holding discussions on Monday night with a mediator, a source familiar with the matter said.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents the flight attendants, had continued to strike even after the Canada Industrial Relations Board declared it unlawful.
Air Canada's unionized flight attendants walked off the job on Saturday after contract talks with the carrier failed, in a move that disrupted travel plans for hundreds of thousands of passengers.
On Monday, Canadian Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu urged both parties to return to the negotiating table and reach a collective agreement for workers as soon as possible.

Trump Mobile's latest ads ditch Android reality for a golden iPhone fantasy
Trump Mobile on X TL;DR Trump Mobile's marketing materials now show a gold iPhone embossed with the carrier's branding and the American flag. The device looks nothing like the T1 Phone, which the company is currently taking orders for on its website. Trump Mobile seems to have pulled a classic switcheroo, promoting a shiny iPhone in its ads instead of the Android phone it's actually selling. Move over, reality, there's a new 'gold' standard in smartphone marketing, and all credit goes to Trump Mobile. The Trump organization's mobile carrier kicked off with a flashy gold, Android 15-based 'T1 Phone,' but now, it looks like the company is headed in a different direction. This elusive T1 Phone is nowhere to be seen in Trump Mobile's latest marketing materials and ads posted across social media platforms like X. Now, the ads feature what appears to be a gold-embossed iPhone 16 Pro. Let's be clear, this phone does not exist. Trump Mobile on X In June this year, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump unveiled Trump Mobile with a gaudy $499 gold Android phone called the T1 Phone, complete with MAGA slogans and a $47.45 monthly plan. The phone was advertised as 'proudly designed and built in the United States,' a line that still features in the official press release of the company, even though shortly after launch, the 'Made in the USA' claims vanished from the site. Now the phone is just 'designed with American values in mind.' Trump Mobile Details about the specs also changed with time. The screen size shrunk from 6.78 inches to 6.25 inches, the RAM dropped, and the phone itself still looks suspiciously like a rendered mock-up, not a real device. Unsurprisingly, the T1 Phone is nowhere to be seen in Trump Mobile's marketing materials. Recent ads posted on X show a gold iPhone 16 Pro-looking device embossed with the words 'Trump Mobile' and the American flag. There's no T1 branding in sight. So, is Trump Mobile now selling custom iPhones? The answer is very, very likely a big no. Trump Mobile on X The gold iPhone shown in Trump Mobile ads is almost certainly a creative, and a misleading one at that. For obvious reasons, this Trump-branded iPhone is not mentioned on the company's website. What's even more bizarre is a Trump Mobile ad that shows a man actually holding this anomaly of an iPhone in his hand. The company could have achieved this using a case on an existing iPhone or perhaps some cinematic tricks. But even here, the T1 Phone is nowhere to be seen. Looks like Trump Mobile has pulled a classic switcharoo. But don't fall for the flashing gold iPhone renders and patriotic symbols. While the T1 Phone is still very much a mystery, it certainly won't look anything like this gleaming iPhone. Don't want to miss the best from Android Authority? The Air Canada strike that crippled operations, led to thousands of cancellations, and could cost it nearly $300 million, is over
Air Canada flight attendants are going back to work after agreeing to a deal that ends a tense strike that led to over 2,700 flights being canceled. After negotiations restarted Monday night, the union announced early Tuesday that it had reached a tentative agreement after mediation had concluded. It added that the union worked through the night, from 7 p.m. to 4:23 a.m. The Air Canada Component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) represents over 10,000 cabin crew members at the flag carrier and its low-cost subsidiary, Air Canada Rouge. Almost all of the airline's 700 daily flights have been canceled since the strike began in the early hours of Saturday morning, affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers. Per data from FlightAware, 2,733 flights operated by the airline and its subsidiary Air Canada Rouge have been canceled since the strike began. In a research note, analysts at Raymond James estimated that the strike would impact the airline's third-quarter earnings by 150 million to 400 million Canadian dollars ($109 million to $289 million). Air Canada on Monday suspended its guidance for the third quarter and the full year, which it had reported in late July. Earlier this month, 99.7% of CUPE members voted to strike if necessary. CUPE said Air Canada withdrew from the bargaining table last Tuesday, and the union issued a notice of its intent to strike the following day. After flight attendants walked off the job early Saturday, Canada's jobs and families minister, Patty Hajdu, ordered the flight attendants back to work. As the union refused, the Canada Industrial Relations Board then ruled the strike illegal. "We will not be returning to the skies this afternoon," CUPE national president Mark Hancock said at a news conference on Monday, CBC reported. "If it means folks like me going to jail, then so be it," he added. The union was fighting for pay increases and compensation for flight attendants' work before takeoff. Details of Tuesday's tentative agreement have not yet been revealed, but the union is about to present it to members. Air Canada previously said it had offered pay increases worth 38% over four years, but the union said this didn't account for inflation and was actually worth 17.2% over four years. It also said the airline had offered 50% pay for some duties on the ground, but the union wanted full hourly pay for these.

Social Security's Future: 5 Backup Income Sources Every Retiree Should Consider
Potential cuts to Social Security benefits understandably concerns many retirees. Social Security often comprises a significant portion of income for its near 58 million recipients, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). A reported insolvency in seven years may create growing unease for those depending on monthly benefits. Be Aware: Check Out: Dual-earning couples may see an $18,100 annual reduction in benefits, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB). Amounts can vary depending on specific circumstances. Taking prudent action now can help provide income to offset any loss in benefits. Before considering any backup income source, retirees should consult with a trusted financial advisor to create a plan. Retirement Accounts IRAs and 401(k) accounts are popular retirement planning tools for many Americans. Roughly 54% of Americans had such accounts in 2022, according to Wisely tapping these accounts can be a good way to complement a reduction in benefits. 'If you have 401(k)s, IRAs or other retirement accounts, it is time to make a plan to access them if your Social Security benefits get squeezed. The challenge is to set up a withdrawal and tax plan that maximizes the income you can get from your retirement accounts across the rest of your life,' said Jay Zigmont, PhD, certified financial planner (CFP) and founder at Childfree Trust. Speaking with an advisor can help seniors create a withdrawal plan. Consider This: An Annuity Annuities often get a bad rap, thanks to fees and other potential charges. While not for everyone, an annuity can be a good fit for some retirees. Fixed annuities commonly have reduced points of entry, making them easier for seniors to purchase. 'One of the most reliable ways to create backup income in retirement is through fixed indexed annuities with guaranteed income riders,' noted Matt Eilers, CEO and Founder of Medalist Wealth Management. 'These income sources grow based on the performance of a stock index, like the S&P 500, but the principal is protected against market volatility, and the income riders guarantee a predictable income payment through retirement.' A Part-Time Job Having a part-time job in retirement may not be desirable, but it can be a good way to supplement Social Security payments. Retirees can earn up to $62,160, as of 2025, before benefits are reduced, according to the SSA. Working a side gig may be attractive, but Zigmont advises seniors to look elsewhere for work. 'While gig work, like driving for Uber, may be popular, it is unpredictable and comes with other costs. Part-time jobs are probably the best bet, as you don't need the benefits,' said Zigmont. Dividend-Paying Stocks Investing in dividend-paying stocks has long been a way for retirees to earn income. Americans can house such investments in both retirement and non-retirement accounts. Holding them in the latter can provide cash flow, and lower-income retirees may face 0% federal tax on them, if they're classified as qualified dividends, according to Fidelity. This strategy poses some risk of placing you in a higher tax bracket and potentially losing the tax deferral benefits found in retirement accounts. Speak with an advisor to identify if this is an option for you. Use Your Home For many Americans, their home is their most valuable asset. If you can downsize, it can free up cash. For example, if your current home is paid off and worth $350,000, and you move to a $200,000 home, that's $150,000 in cash you can claim, before fees tied to selling the house. Such an amount could offset a reduction in benefits. A reverse mortgage is another possibility, but it may not be worth the risks and fees associated with such an action. A reduction in Social Security benefits can cause grave concern for many seniors. Pairing the right backup income source with reduced spending can help mitigate the financial impact.
