Coach says Speedy Tigers are only 80 per cent fit for Asia Cup
Coach Sarjit Singh admitted on Wednesday that his players were still short of their best condition ahead of the tournament in Bihar, India, starting Aug 29.
The Asia Cup winners will book a ticket to next year's World Cup, but Malaysia's preparations have been hit by concerns over fitness.
"Being ranked world No. 12 and Asia's No. 2 behind India (No. 8), our target is to reach the final," said Sarjit in Bukit Jalil.

"The National Sports Institute revealed that after seven weeks of chamber training, the players are only 80 per cent fit. Teams like South Korea, Japan and China will be fitter as they are used to military-style training.
"But with more than a week left before our first match, I expect the players to improve."
Malaysia are in Group B alongside South Korea (world No. 13), Bangladesh (No. 29) and Taiwan (No. 38).
They open against Bangladesh on Aug 29, followed by defending champions South Korea the next day and Taiwan on Sept 1.
The top two will advance to the Super Four.
Sarjit's side will also play warm-up games against India (Aug 25) and China (Aug 27) in Bihar after managing just two friendlies against the national juniors in Kuala Lumpur.
"Those matches will help us iron out shortcomings," he said.
The Speedy Tigers are expected to reach the Super Four, but Sarjit admitted it will be a stern test.
"We will likely face India, Korea and Japan or China. My players must avoid defensive mistakes and remain consistent. I also hope injuries don't come into play," he said.
Malaysia have come under fire for their poor results since Sarjit took charge in March last year.
They finished fourth in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, seventh in the Nations Cup in Poland, sixth in the Asian Champions Trophy in China, and sixth again at the Nations Cup in Bukit Jalil in June, despite being set a semi-final target.
Meanwhile, Group A comprises India, world No. 18 Japan, world No. 23 China and unranked Kazakhstan.
The Malaysian squad:
Goalkeepers: Hafizuddin Othman, Rafaizul Saini;
Defenders: Faiz Helmi Jali, Marhan Jalil (captain), Syed Syafiq Syed Cholan, Amirul Hamizan Azahar, Fariz Harizan, Arif Syafie Ishak;
Midfielders: Andywalfian Jeffrynus, Fitri Saari, Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi, Shafiq Hassan, Alfarico Lance Liau, Shellow Silverius;

Sports critic slams national hockey coach Sarjit
KUALA LUMPUR: National hockey coach Sarjit Singh's revelation about the state of his team has left many people shocked. Sarjit said at a press conference on Wednesday that the national team are only 80 per cent fit for the Asia Cup in Bihar, India from Aug 29 to Sept 7. The winners of the Asia Cup will qualify for the 2026 World Cup. But it already appears that the Speedy Tigers are too slow to chase for that ticket. Sports analyst Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli said fitness is a very important aspect in sports and the national team need to be 100 per cent fit to be able to challenge others at the Asia Cup. "It's really shocking to know that the national hockey team are only 80 per cent fit for the Asia Cup. How can they give their best when they are not fully fit? "Sarjit has been given a free hand and has been in charge of the national team for 16 months. Until now his team are only 80 per cent fit. "As a coach, what has Sarjit been doing since last March? He should have come up with a plan and should have got the services of a fitness instructor since last year to improve the players' fitness. "He knows very well from the beginning of this year that the Asia Cup is a crucial tournament which offers a place in the World Cup and the team should have been in top form physically and mentally for the Asia Cup. "Sarjit is not handling a school team but in charge of the Malaysia team who are ranked 12th in the world and he is fully responsible for the team. "When there's no Key Performance Index (KPI) set for a coach, this happens. He gives excuses after excuses after every tournament and gets away with it. "He has given an excuse before the Asia Cup starts, so if the team don't achieve their target, he can escape again. "As a national chief coach, he must do his job professionally. And if he cannot achieve the target set for him his services should be terminated," said Pekan. Malaysia are drawn in Group B of the Asia Cup with defending champions South Korea, Bangladesh and Taiwan. Group A comprises India, Japan, China and Kazakhstan. Under Sarjit, the national team have not achieved any podium finish in their last four tournaments.

Rugby-Australia coach Schmidt hopes for better start against fired-up Springboks
FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Rugby Championship - Australia Captain's Run - Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa - August 15, 2025 Australia head coach Joe Schmidt during training REUTERS/Siphiwe Sibeko/File Photo CAPE TOWN (Reuters) -Australia coach Joe Schmidt is banking on his side making a faster start to the second Rugby Championship test against South Africa in Cape Town on Saturday, and not having to dig quite as deep as last weekend's heroic win at Ellis Park. The Springboks dominated the opening quarter in Johannesburg to take a 22-0 lead inside 18 minutes, before Australia roared back in the second half for a stunning 38-22 victory at a ground where they had not won in 62 years. Schmidt is convinced his team are up for the challenge again, but knows the Springboks are unlikely to let them off the hook to that degree a second time. "We can't wait around," Schmidt told reporters in Cape Town on Thursday. "We can't wait for the Springboks to bring their game. We've got to kick off with our game a lot better than we did last week. We've talked more about that this week." A fractured jaw for Dylan Pietsch means Schmidt has handed a debut to former Rugby Sevens wing Corey Toole, one of the fastest players in Super Rugby. "He's a great young kid," Schmidt said. "He's obviously come in from the Sevens programme, which is something a number of the South Africans have done. He's adapting well and this will be a big, steep learning curve for him." Captain Harry Wilson is out having failed to recover from an injury picked up last weekend, but that blow has been softened by the return of Rob Valetini at number eight. "Losing Harry is not ideal at all," Schmidt admitted. "Rob's played 40 minutes for us so far this season, that is all. But it's good to have him back and I'm sure he'll acquit himself really well." South Africa made 10 changes to their side as a fuming coach Rassie Erasmus brought back the experience of Handre Pollard (flyhalf), Damian de Allende (inside centre) and Willie le Roux (fullback). "It's been a while since a game just ran away from us," Erasmus said. "It's not a lekker (good) feeling when that happens. You know when your Mom sends you a message to say, 'My kid, I still love you', things aren't lekker." While the Springboks will undoubtedly tighten up their game-plan on Saturday, Erasmus rejected the idea they would abandon their new expansive running style altogether. "I feel Australia are playing pretty much like we did in 2019, defend, defend, and if you make an error, they will pounce on that," Erasmus said of his side that lifted the Rugby World Cup trophy six years ago. "We don't believe that's the way to win the next World Cup. We will never throw everything out, we've worked too hard over the last two or three years to get things in place."
