Thailand F-16 fighter bombs targets in Cambodia as border clashes escalate

Japan Times5 days ago
A Thai F-16 fighter jet bombed targets in Cambodia on Thursday, both sides said, as weeks of tension over a border dispute escalated into clashes that have killed at least two civilians.
Of the six F-16 fighter jets that Thailand readied to deploy along the disputed border, one of the aircraft fired into Cambodia and destroyed a military target, the Thai army said. Both countries accused each other of starting the clash early on Thursday.
"We have used air power against military targets as planned," Thai army deputy spokesperson Richa Suksuwanon told reporters. Thailand also closed its border with Cambodia.
Cambodia's defense ministry said the jets dropped two bombs on a road, and that it "strongly condemns the reckless and brutal military aggression of the Kingdom of Thailand against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cambodia."
The skirmishes came after Thailand recalled its ambassador to Cambodia late Wednesday and said it would expel Cambodia's envoy in Bangkok, after a second Thai soldier in the space of a week lost a limb to a landmine that Bangkok alleged had been laid recently in the disputed area.
Thailand's foreign ministry said Cambodian troops fired "heavy artillery" on a Thai military base on Thursday morning and also targeted civilian areas including a hospital, leading to civilian casualties.
"The Royal Thai Government is prepared to intensify our self-defense measures if Cambodia persists in its armed attack and violations upon Thailand's sovereignty," the ministry said in a statement.
Thai residents including children and the elderly ran to shelters, built of concrete and fortified with sandbags and car tires, in the Surin border province.
"How many rounds have been fired? It's countless," an unidentified woman told the Thai Public Broadcasting Service (TPBS) while hiding in the shelter as gunfire and explosions were heard intermittently in the background.
Cambodia's foreign ministry said Thailand's air strikes were "unprovoked" and called on its neighbor to withdraw its forces and "refrain from any further provocative actions that could escalate the situation."
For more than a century, Thailand and Cambodia have contested sovereignty at various undemarcated points along their 817-kilometer land border, which has led to skirmishes over several years and at least a dozen deaths, including during a weeklong exchange of artillery in 2011.
Tensions were reignited in May following the killing of a Cambodian soldier during a brief exchange of gunfire, which escalated into a full-blown diplomatic crisis and now has triggered armed clashes.

The clashes began early Thursday near the disputed Ta Moan Thom temple along the eastern border between Cambodia and Thailand, around 360 km from the Thai capital Bangkok.
"Artillery shell fell on people's homes," Sutthirot Charoenthanasak, district chief of Kabcheing in Surin province, said, describing the firing by the Cambodian side.
"Two people have died," he added, noting that district authorities had evacuated 40,000 civilians from 86 villages near the border to safer locations.
Thailand's military said Cambodia deployed a surveillance drone before sending troops with heavy weapons to an area near the temple.
Cambodian troops opened fire and two Thai soldiers were wounded, a Thai army spokesperson said, adding that Cambodia had used multiple weapons, including rocket launchers.
A spokesperson for Cambodia's defense ministry, however, said there had been an unprovoked incursion by Thai troops and that Cambodian forces had responded in self-defense.
Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said the situation was delicate.
"We have to be careful," he told reporters. "We will follow international law."
An attempt by Thai premier Paetongtarn Shinawatra to resolve the recent tensions via a call with Cambodia's influential former Prime Minister Hun Sen, the contents of which were leaked, kicked off a political storm in Thailand, leading to her suspension by a court.
Hun Sen said in a Facebook post that two Cambodian provinces had come under shelling from the Thai military.
Thailand this week accused Cambodia of placing landmines in a disputed area that injured three soldiers. Phnom Penh denied the claim and said the soldiers had veered off agreed routes and triggered a mine left behind from decades of war.
Cambodia has many landmines left over from its civil war decades ago, numbering in the millions according to de-mining groups.
But Thailand maintains that landmines have been placed at the border area recently, which Cambodia has described as baseless allegations.

Ceasefire takes effect between Thailand and Cambodia after five-day border battle

A ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand came into effect at midnight on Monday, hours after they agreed to halt their deadliest conflict in more than a decade following five days of intense fighting that displaced over 300,000 people. After efforts by Malaysia, chair of the ASEAN regional bloc, the United States and China to bring both sides to the table, the two countries' leaders agreed during talks in Putrajaya to end hostilities, resume direct communications and create a mechanism to implement the ceasefire. "This is a vital first step toward de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security," Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim earlier told a press conference, flanked by the Thai and Cambodian leaders, following more than two hours of talks at his residence in Putrajaya, Malaysia. At least 38 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in clashes in multiple locations along their 800 kilometer border since fighting between the two Southeast Asian neighbors erupted on July 24. There were no official reports of unrest from either side in the hours leading up to the ceasefire taking effect. The truce talks followed a sustained peace push by Anwar and U.S. President Donald Trump's phone calls to both leaders over the weekend, where he said he would not conclude trade deals with them if fighting continued. Both sides face a tariff of 36% on their goods in the U.S., their biggest export market. Trump in a post on Truth Social on Monday congratulated all parties and said he had spoken to the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia and instructed his trade team to restart negotiations. "By ending this War, we have saved thousands of lives ... I have now ended many Wars in just six months — I am proud to be the President of PEACE!" Trump said. Decades of disputes The two countries have wrangled for decades over border territory and have been on a conflict footing since the killing of a Cambodian soldier in a skirmish late in May, which led to a troop buildup on both sides and a full-blown diplomatic crisis that brought Thailand's fragile coalition government to the brink of collapse. They accuse each other of starting the fighting last week that within hours escalated from small arms fire to heavy artillery and rockets and Thailand's unexpected scrambling of an F-16 fighter jet to carry out airstrikes. Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayacha praised Trump for pushing the peace effort and said trade negotiations would start from a good place. "I thanked him from my heart for what we received from him and helped our country move beyond this crisis," he told reporters on his return from Malaysia after speaking to Trump. "After today the situation should de-escalate." Simmering tensions boiled over last week after Thailand recalled its ambassador to Phnom Penh and expelled Cambodia's envoy, in response to a second Thai soldier losing a limb to a landmine that Bangkok alleged Cambodian troops had laid. Cambodia has strongly denied the charge, as well as Thai accusations that it has fired at civilian targets including schools and hospitals. It had accused Thailand of "unprovoked and premeditated military aggression." 'Decisive mediation' U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a statement said he and Trump expected all sides to "fully honor their commitments to end this conflict." Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said his Thai counterpart had played a positive role and he deeply appreciated Trump's "decisive mediation" and China's constructive participation. In social media posts, Hun Manet said he had returned to Cambodia "with brilliant results" and had spoken with Trump, who expressed a desire for lasting peace. The fighting has scarred border communities on both sides. In Thailand's Sisaket province, a house was reduced to splintered wood and twisted beams after it was struck by artillery fire from Cambodia. The roof had caved in, windows hung by the frame and power lines drooped over the structure. Amid the din of occasional artillery fire, homes and shops remained shut and a four-lane road was deserted except for a few cars and military vehicles. Dozens of displaced residents lined up quietly for their evening meal at an evacuation center about 40 km away from the frontlines. A few children played with dogs, others swept the dusty floor. Fifty-four-year-old Nong Ngarmsri just wanted to go back to her village. "I want to go to my children who stayed back," she said. "I want them to cease firing so that I can go home."

Ceasefire goes into effect between Thailand and Cambodia

A ceasefire agreed between Thailand and Cambodia has come into effect, bringing clashes that continued for days along their disputed border to a halt. The fighting between Thai and Cambodian forces erupted on Thursday. More than 30 people, including civilians, were reportedly killed, while 300,000 people were forced to evacuate. On Monday, Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet held peace talks mediated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. His country serves as this year's ASEAN chair. Anwar on the same day announced that the two countries agreed on an "immediate and unconditional ceasefire." The truce went into effect at midnight on Tuesday, local time. Since then, no clashes have been reported in the border areas. US President Donald Trump strongly pushed the Thai and Cambodian leaders for a ceasefire by bringing up tariff negotiations. The deal was signed as representatives from the United States and China took part in the peace talks. Military commanders from the two sides are holding informal talks on Tuesday, and officials from the two governments are due to meet to discuss borders. The focus now is on whether the two countries can ease tensions, as both sides have maintained their stance of not making concessions on territorial rights in border areas.

Gunman kills 5, self in Bangkok

In Bangkok, a gunman fatally shot five people at a fresh food market before turning the weapon on himself. Local authorities say the incident took place Monday afternoon at Or Tor Kor Market. Police are investigating the motive, including whether the perpetrator had links to the market. An eyewitness described feeling shock, then sorrow for those who lost their lives. "It's really scary and very dangerous," she said. The market sells local fresh fruit and vegetables. It is located near the popular Chatuchak Market. A shooting at a luxury shopping mall in central Bangkok two years ago left two people dead and five injured.
