Jets cornerback now has clearer pathway to 53-man roster following another injury
The New York Jets officially placed cornerback Kris Boyd on injured reserve.
Boyd was carted off the field earlier this month during the team's intrasquad scrimmage. He was expected to be a core special teamer this year, and his season-ending setback creates a roster spot for another contender.
Jets cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse could be the one to take advantage.
Boyd, 28, signed a one-year, $1.6 million contract, including $333,000 guaranteed, earlier this offseason.
Boyd had spent the previous two campaigns playing for the Houston Texans. In 2024, he played 365 snaps on special teams, second-most on the Texans.
Jets special teams coordinator Chris Banjo would have appreciated that experience this year:
Bernard-Converse was drafted by the Jets in the sixth-round of the 2023 NFL draft. He entered training camp this year firmly on the roster bubble. Bernard-Converse now possesses a clearer pathway to roster contention.
Bernard-Converse totaled 111 snaps on special teams for the Jets in 2024. That accounted for roughly 25 percent of the Jets' total special teams plays last season. Bernard-Converse appeared in seven total contests.
Boyd was essentially a lock to make the roster. His injury changes the math at cornerback and special teams. Bernard-Converse could prove capable of filling that void.

Players are listed in alphabetical order: TOP IOWA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CLASS 4A QUARTERBACKS Jude Baumgardner, Boone, Senior Baumgardner averaged over 17 yards per completion last year, finishing with 1,327 yards in the air and 15 touchdowns, rushing for 205 with seven scores. Asher Brueck, Indianola, Senior Brueck was effective, completing 61 percent of his passes while recording 1,326 yards and 11 touchdowns in the air. On the ground, he piled up 140 yards and three scores. Jameer Falls, Mason City, Junior Falls showed off his abilities as a 10th-grader, throwing 13 touchdowns against just four interceptions.
