Cycling-Bardet makes brief Tour appearance as water carrier
MONT-DORE (Reuters) -A month after hanging up his wheels, former Tour de France podium finisher Romain Bardet found himself back at the race on Monday – but this time on the roadside, handing out water bottles to former teammates during Stage 10.
The 34-year-old Frenchman, once hailed as the great home hope and a perennial team leader at the Tour, made a surprise appearance in the Massif Central, the region he calls home.
Where he once attacked on mountain passes, Bardet was instead offering bidons to Picnic PostNL riders – a quiet, symbolic role-reversal that was not lost on fans or the peloton.
Bardet retired last month following the Criterium du Dauphine, ending a career that included two Tour podiums, in 2016 and 2017, and four stage victories on the world's biggest race.
While his days of leading GC battles are over, Bardet's brief stint as a water carrier showed he is still very much part of the cycling family.

(Reuters) -Mitchell Starc delivered the fastest five-wicket haul in test history on Monday as Australia crushed the West Indies by 176 runs in the third test in Kingston, Jamaica to complete a 3-0 series sweep. In the end, it was a narrow escape for the hosts as they added another run before Starc returned to bowl Jayden Seales. Swimming-World championship 10km open water event postponed
SINGAPORE (Reuters) -The women's 10km open water event at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore was postponed on Monday due to poor water quality off Sentosa. World Aquatics said in a statement that the opening event, scheduled for Tuesday, would be moved to Wednesday after readings exceeded acceptable thresholds. "While testing in recent days has consistently shown water quality at the venue to meet World Aquatics' acceptable thresholds, analysis of samples taken on 13 July surpassed these thresholds," it said. "The decision to postpone racing was made in the best interests of athlete health and safety." The men's 10km is now due to start the open water schedule on Wednesday, with the women immediately after. The indoor swimming events at the Singapore Sports Hub run from July 27 to August 3. The announcement comes as the city marks three years to go until the Opening Ceremony and celebrates a major legacy milestone: more than one million enrolments in the PlayLA youth sports programme. For the first time in nearly three decades, the Summer Olympics will return to the United States, with Los Angeles hosting for the third time after 1932 and 1984. The 2028 Games are set to feature 844 ticketed events designed to maximize both domestic and international viewership. Organizers revealed that the Opening Ceremony will take place on July 14, 2028, at 8:00 p.m. ET (5:00 p.m. PT), split between the LA Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The Closing Ceremony is scheduled for July 30 at the Coliseum. In a notable departure from tradition, the LA28 schedule swaps the usual order of athletics and swimming competitions. Track and field events will open the Games in the first week, with swimming moving to the second week, culminating in its finale on the penultimate day at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The first Olympic champion of LA28 will be crowned at Venice Beach in the triathlon event, while the marathon will close out athletics on the final weekend. Day 15 is expected to be the busiest for medal events, with 16 team sport finals and 19 individual sport finals taking place.
