Here's who has qualified for next week's U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club
The field is nearly set for next week's U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.
The best golfers in the world will be teeing it up next week for the 125th playing of the U.S. Open and from a Pittsburgh native to a number of past champions trying to win the championship again, there are plenty of big storylines to follow.
The U.S. Open will tee off on June 12 and here are some of those big storylines to follow.
Matt Vogt, a former Oakmont caddy qualifies for the U.S. Open
Matt Vogt was among those who qualified for the upcoming U.S. Open during final qualifying on Monday.
Final qualifying consisted of a grueling 36-hole competition known as "Golf's Longest Day."
Vogt, who caddied at Oakmont for six years and now a dentist based out of Indianapolis, shot 68-68 at the Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Washington to earn medalist honors and a spot in the U.S. Open next week in his hometown.
After qualifying for the U.S. Open, Vogt said Oakmont and the tournament being held in Pittsburgh means so much to him, but he tried to block out those thoughts while attempting to qualify.
"It took every ounce of energy in my body to not think about that all day," Vogt said.

Vogt said he hasn't been at Oakmont since 2021 and hasn't seen the recent renovations at the course that have been implemented since then.
"It was very hard then," Vogt said. "You know, I'm a different player. I'm a better player, I know that. But I'm playing with the best players in the world, so I will soak up every single second of that week and stay insanely present. It's just a dream come true."
High School Junior Mason Howell qualifies for U.S. Open
Another big storyline that came out of final qualifying on Monday happened at the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta, Georgia as 17-year-old Mason Howell made big headlines.
Howell, a high school junior who is committed to play college golf at the University of Georgia, qualified for the U.S. Open by shooting 63-63 and finishing 18-under par to earn his spot at Oakmont Country Club.
"That was one of the greatest moments of my life," Howell said after qualifying.

Howell, currently 8th in the American Junior Golf Association ranking list, earned his spot in the U.S. Open without making a single bogey across his 36 holes of final qualifying.
Cameron Young qualifies for U.S. Open in playoff
One of the higher profile final qualifying events was held at the Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Columbus, Ohio and featured some prominent PGA Tour names who were trying to earn a spot at next week's U.S. Open.
Erik Van Rooyen earned medalist honors with a stunning 13-under par score, six shots better than the next player in the field, but the big storyline from the qualifier was the playoff for the final qualifying spot.
Rickie Fowler and Max Homa, who was carrying his own bag, both shot 5-under par to earn their way into the playoff.

Cameron Young also made the playoff, making a necessary birdie on the last of his 36 holes to move to 5-under as well.

In the playoff, Young birdied the first hole, securing him a spot in the U.S. Open.
Can Bryson DeChambeau go back-to-back?
Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, last year's winner at Pinehurst, is aiming to become just the second back-to-back champion of the last 75 years, a feat achieved by Brooks Koepka in 2017 and 2018 and by Ben Hogan in 1950 and 1951.

Should DeChambeau be able to repeat, he'll join a relatively exclusive club of players to win the U.S. Open three or more times that includes Tiger Woods, Hale Irwin, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, and Willie Anderson.
Phil Mickelson still chasing the career grand slam

Six times a runner up at the U.S. Open, Mickelson has struggled as of late at major championships. Since winning the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in 2021, Mickelson has missed the cut in 10 of his 14 appearances at majors.
In the four times he made the cut, he had a 2nd place and 43rd place finish at the Masters, 58th place finish at the PGA Championship, and 60th place finish at the Open Championship.
Is Scottie Scheffler the favorite to win at Oakmont?
When the players tee off at Oakmont next week, Scottie Scheffler will likely be the favorite to win the tournament.
Scheffler, the world's No. 1 ranked player, is on a hot streak currently, having won three of the last four competitions he has played in.
With wins at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, the PGA Championship, and the Memorial, Scheffler has now been victorious 16 times on the PGA Tour since winning the 2022 WM Phoenix Open.

In seven U.S. Open appearances, Scheffler has posted three top 10 finishes, including a tied for second place result in 2022 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Scheffler competed in the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont as an amateur, but missed the cut.

Sony State of Play: 007 First Light, Marvel Tokon and Everything Announced

Ghost of Yotei The spiritual sequel to Ghost of Tsushima had a trailer that showed more vibes than gameplay, pretty much just teeing up a gameplay reveal stream coming in July. Ah well. Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls Ignore that word salad title -- this is a heretofore unlooked-for Marvel fighting game from Arc System Works, famed for the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series as well as Dragon Ball FighterZ. Capcom 2 (where are my super jumps?), Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls will have 4v4 tag team battles, promising tight gameplay and fun new costumes for Marvel heroes. It's coming to PS5 and PC in 2026. Lumines Arise A new game in the Lumines universe is coming from the creators of Tetris Effect: Connected, and you can see the impact with synesthetic combination of music and visuals working together. The trailer opened with a bloody protagonist origin transitioning into gameplay of him, newly reborn, slashing and shooting his way through hordes of dead demon-like things. This game -- and whatever panoply of styles and oddball features suitable for Suda51 -- is coming in 2026. Silent Hill f Another trailer for the next Silent Hill game set in 1960s Japan, this game interspersed cutscenes with some gameplay of main character Hinako, a schooolgirl, fighting horrific mannequin-like monsters in schools and shrines across a mist-covered town. The game comes out on September 25, 2025. Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement The next game in the Bloodstained series of Castlevania-likes is another side-scrolling grim action game, which is coming out in 2026. Digimon Story: Time Stranger A new Digimon game from Bandai Namco, Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a story-rich RPG with a cel-shaded anime style set in a Japan invaded by monsters. The game comes out October 3, 2025. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles A remaster of the Final Fantasy Tactics classic, the game has two versions: the original game and the enhanced version with fully-voiced dialogue, improved graphics and more. Launching on PS5 and PS4 September 30, 2025. It's out July 31 on PS5 and PS4. Cairn The upcoming climbing game Cairn got another trailer ahead of its release later this year. Adam Silver talks mid-market NBA Finals, new All-Star game format and the Mavs lottery
The Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers will square off in the 2025 NBA Finals starting on Thursday night at the Paycom Center. It's a matchup of two teams who play in mid-level markets, which always creates the conversation about how the sport's ratings will fare outside of NBA diehards. On Wednesday's edition of "Breakfast Ball," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver offered up his take on why the matchup is great for the NBA. "At the end of the day, we are a league of relatively small markets. The goal is to have a league where every team is in position to compete," Silver said. "It's been intentional, from our standpoint, to create a system, a collective bargaining agreement [CBA], that allows more teams to compete. We're going to have to go through a process of getting to the point where people are accustomed to tuning into the finals because the two teams deserve to be there, and it's the best basketball. "If I asked somebody if they were going to watch the Super Bowl, they wouldn't say 'who's playing?' It's a national holiday. That's nirvana. If the Knicks are in the finals, there's a segment of our fan base that's going to watch that may not watch if it's other teams, but my job is to get people to love and follow this game, so that if you're a huge basketball fan, you should want to tune in to the finals because that's the best basketball." It's the first time that the Thunder have appeared in the NBA Finals since 2012 and the Pacers' first trip to the championship round since 2000. Here are some other notable tidbits from Silver's appearance: The 2025 NBA Draft Lottery had plenty of fireworks, as the Dallas Mavericks — who were 11th in the lottery seeding with a 1.8 percent chance of getting the No. 1 pick — won the lottery. Meanwhile, the Utah Jazz, who had the worst record in the NBA, fell from first to fifth, and the Washington Wizards fell from second to sixth. Dallas is expected to take Duke star and 2024-25 AP Player of the Year Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick. The Mavericks, shooting up from No. 11 to No. 1 in the draft order after trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, drew criticism from the basketball world about the authenticity of the NBA Draft lottery. Silver provided his perspective on that narrative. "The worst-performing team had a 14 percent chance of winning [the lottery], which means there was an 86 percent chance they wouldn't get it," Silver said. "Dallas had roughly a two percent chance [to win it]. The team that lost the most had a seven times better chance. Two percent is two percent. It's going to happen. When people say 'and therefore the lottery was broken,' I have a different view. "The purpose of the lottery is to disincentive teams from tanking. Here, you had a team — regardless of whatever people think of that [Dončić] trade — that was trying to win. Then, Kyrie [Irving] got injured. Then, Anthony Davis got injured, and so, then they found themselves in the lottery. Odds are odds, and that's how it turned out." The NBA has dabbled in several All-Star game formats in recent memory, the most recent one seeing four teams playing against each other in a tournament. Those teams were made up of two NBA All-Star teams, a Rising Stars team and a "World Team." While Silver said that he wasn't "exactly sure what the format will be" for the 2026 All-Star Game, the commissioner expressed that he felt this year's "4-Nations Face-off" was a "huge success" and could serve as a potential model for the NBA. The "4-Nations Face-off" saw the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden compete in a round-robin event earlier this year, with Canada defeating the United States in overtime of the title game. The NHL has several players who grew up outside the United States, primarily in Canada, while the NBA has several superstars who played internationally before coming to the NBA (e.g. three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and Doncic). On that note, each of the last two No. 1 picks in the NBA Draft (Victor Wembanyama and Zaccharie Risacher) were players who competed professionally in France, with each of the first two selections in the 2024 NBA Draft (Alex Sarr, who played in Australia prior to being selected, was the No. 2 pick) being international selections. Is the United States losing its luster as the basketball empire of the globe? "I think there are things that Europe is doing better than we are in terms of training. I feel a bit defensive about the American players because it's not for a lack of a work ethic," Silver said. "In Little League, you have pitch counts for young pitchers. If you look at what's happening in AAU, in many cases, you have young players playing 6-8 games for two-to-three days at these tournaments. And I get it, if you're a young player and that's the game that Rick Pitino's coming to or whatever else, and you and the people around you feel he needs to see you play and your knee's throbbing because you're 15 years old, you're still going to play. "And I think it's another area that the NBA needs to get more involved in, and we've had these discussions with the NCAA just to have more oversight over youth basketball, because there's nothing more important to us than making sure that those elite players grow up to be team basketball players and not just have great skills but understand how to win games."
