The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for Cook County starting Saturday morning and lasting into next week.
The Extreme Heat Watch takes effect at 10 a.m. Saturday, and lasts through 12 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, and covers the entire county, including Chicago.
The NWS issues an Extreme Heat Watch when the conditions for dangerous heat are possible, but the occurrence and timing are still uncertain. During the watch, you should be prepared to cancel outdoor activities if a warning is issued. If you don't have air conditioning, make sure you know where your nearest cooling center is, and/or make arrangements to stay with friends and family who have air conditioning.
You should also check on your elderly neighbors and people who may need help in their day-to-day lives.
The watch stems from a heat dome in the Midwest that puts millions of people at risk with high temperatures and stifling humidity. The Chicago heat index over the weekend is supposed to be in the triple digits, feeling like 100 to 105 degrees.
Cook County and Chicago cooling centers are available for anyone who does not have air condition and needs to cool off.
Chicago has six permanent cooling centers, including Garfield Center, which is open 24 hours. The other five locations are typically open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, but their hours are often extended during heat waves in the city. Click here for more information.
There are also 34 cooling centers around Cook County, many of which are open 24 hours during severe heat waves or if needed. Click here to see a full list of county cooling centers.
Additionally, public libraries and police stations throughout the city of Chicago and Cook County are often open on weekends for anyone who needs access to air conditioning and water. Chicago Public Libraries have water fountains available for public use.
All of Chicago's public swimming pools and splash pads open Saturday as well. Outdoor pools will primarily be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. but, for the first time since 2020, they are all open seven days a week.
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke: Symptoms and how to treat
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are major risks during a heat wave, especially with high humidity. It is easy to become overheated and dehydrated in high temperatures, so it is essential to make sure you are drinking enough water.
Heat exhaustion is milder than heat stroke. It can develop after several days of exposure to heat and inadequate or unbalanced fluid replacement. Heatstroke is a serious illness that happens when the body begins to lose its ability to regulate its own temperature and functions, and can result in permanent disability or death if not treated as quickly as possible.
Heat exhaustion symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, irritability, thirst, heavy sweating, high body temperature and decreased urine output.
If you or someone you know is experiencing heat exhaustion move into a cool indoor space or shade immediately, give them liquids to drink, remove unnecessary clothing including shoes and socks, used cold water or a cold compress to cool the person down on their head, face and neck, and frequently sip cold water. The CDC also encourages calling 911 or taking the person to an urgent care clinic or the emergency room for treatment.
Heatstroke symptoms include confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech, hot and dry skin or profuse sweating, very high body temperature, loss of consciousness, and very high body temperature. If treatment is delayed, it can quickly become fatal, the CDC says.
If you are with someone experiencing heat stroke, call 911 immediately and stay with that person until help arrives. Move them into a shaded, cool area and remove their outer clothing then work to cool them down as quickly as you can with cold water or an ice bath if possible. Wet the skin or place cold, wet clothes on the skin, or soak their clothing with cold water. You should also circulate the air around them by fanning to help cool them off. The CDC also recommends placing cold wet cloths or ice on the head, neck, armpits and groin to help cool them faster.

Despite the hot temperatures this summer, Naperville's Centennial Beach has seen a drop in total attendance numbers compared to last year due, in part, to closures caused by inclement weather and the drowning death of a patron. However, the number of people playing rounds at Springbrook and Naperbrook golf courses has remained on par with what the Naperville Park District saw in 2024. From May 26, which was Memorial Day, through Aug. 14, 94,077 people visited Centennial Beach, according to Sameera Luthman, park district director of marketing and communications. That's a decrease of about 15% compared to the same time frame in 2024, when they'd had 111,021 visitors. Total 2024 attendance at Centennial Beach was 11% above average last summer, attracting some 143,000 visitors between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. There were nine days this year on which Centennial Beach experienced low attendance, Luthman said. And the facility was forced to close for two days — July 11-12 — because of the weather and a third day, July 11, following the death of a 27-year-old man from Streamwood, which also resulted in the pool closing early on July 10. Unlike the beach, golf course attendance has been consistent with what the park district saw in 2024. Through Aug. 13, Springbrook Golf Course recorded 19,536 rounds played and Naperbrook Golf Course logged 18,111, data shows. The numbers at Springbrook and Naperbrook are consistent with numbers from 2024 for the same time period, with last year's tallies being 18,664 and 18,609 respectively, Luthman said. 'For golf, May to early June 2025 was cool with below normal temperatures followed by extreme heat in late June,' she said. 'July has seen higher than normal temperatures and humidity, which also brought several rounds of heavy rains.' Luthman noted that on days when it is particularly hot, golfers will play earlier in the morning or in the evening to avoid the heat. The colder weather earlier in the summer also impacted attendance at Centennial Beach, she said. As summer approaches its end, Naperville residents only have until Sept. 1 to enjoy the water at Centennial Beach. The facility will be closed Aug. 20-22 and Aug. 25-29, according to the park district. Because the number of weekends in the season are dwindling, weather could play a role in how many people head to Centennial and what their final attendance count tallies in at. The National Weather Service's forecast as of Monday was calling for sunny conditions at the end of the week and no rain predicted.

Building collapses in West Englewood on Loomis Boulevard

A building collapsed in Chicago's West Englewood neighborhood following a stormy weekend, but without an apparent known cause. Video from CBS Skywatch shows a large part of the building, which appears to have been an abandoned home, caved in on itself Monday morning. The building is located on Loomis Boulevard between Marquette Road and 68th Street. According to the Chicago Fire Department, the building was vacant, and no one was hurt in the collapse. What caused the building to collapse is still under investigation. The Chicago Department of Buildings released a statement, writing, "DOB inspectors responded this morning and are still on-site alongside demolition contractors assessing the building's current status. They are joined by Com-Ed and People's Gas, as their teams disconnect their respective utilities to prepare for a total demolition of 6725 S. Loomis. Though the cause of the collapse is unknown at this time, DOB is thankful to our first responders for their swift action and remain grateful no one was harmed in this incident."

The night sky may be illuminated over the next few days in more than a dozen northern US states, courtesy of a natural phenomenon known as the Northern Lights. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) researchers report that the celestial glow should be visible through Wednesday, Aug. 20, in at least 14 states. Formally known as the aurora borealis, according to the National Weather Service, the colorful night skies are caused by the interaction between Earth's magnetic field and the Sun's plasma. The index, according to NOAA, indicates how far away from the poles the Northern Lights might be visible. The K-index (also called Kp) stands for 'Planetary Index' and is an indicator of disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field. It ranges from 0 to 9, according to NOAA, and a Kp score between 3 and 5 indicates brighter activity.
