The next wearable tech could be a face 'tattoo' that measures mental stress

Tattoos can reveal a lot about a person.
One day, they could even reveal a person's brain waves.
At least, that's the goal for researchers at the University of Texas at Austin.
"This tattoo is not like a normal tattoo," Nanshu Lu, a professor in the university's Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, told Business Insider.
Lu worked alongside engineering professor Luis Sentis and others to develop an ultra-thin, wireless wearable device that she compared to a temporary tattoo sticker. The non-invasive device, applied to the skin with an adhesive, measures brain activity and eye movement to gauge an individual's mental workload.
Lu said the device is intended for people working in high-stakes or high-demand jobs, such as aircraft pilots, air traffic controllers, drone operators, and robot teleoperators. These jobs could be considered high-stress since they require focus, quick-thinking skills, and a small margin for error.
"Technology is developing much faster than human evolution, so it is very hard to keep up with the technological demand in modern jobs," she said. "Therefore, it's very important not to overload the operator because not only would that jeopardize the outcome of the mission, it would also harm their health."
Although the idea of an electronic tattoo might sound like something out of a sci-fi novel, humans and technology have been melding for a while.
Nearly 40 years ago, for example, the first fully digital hearing aid became available to the public, according to the Hearing Health Foundation. And now, Elon Musk is embedding computer chips into people's brains through his company, Neuralink.
Recent wearable tech inventions include smartwatches, Bluetooth headphones, VR headsets, and fitness trackers, to name a few. Some health-conscious folks invest in wearable technology like the Oura Ring, which collects data on everything from sleep activity to body temperature.
However, those devices don't analyze brain activity and eye movement.
"Over the years, we developed a series of non-invasive skin conformable e-tattoos to measure cardiovascular health, then measure the mental stress from the palm sweating," Lu said of previous devices she helped develop. "Now, finally, we move on to the brainwave."
Lu said the device certainly isn't the first or only EEG sensor on the market, but it's smaller and lighter than previous models. Conducting an EEG test typically requires attaching electrodes to an individual's full scalp with a gel or paste to collect data, which can be time-consuming.
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin are attempting to streamline that process by proving mental workload can be measured only from the forehead. During lab tests, participants did memorization drills that involved a screen with flashing boxes.
"In the past, there was no way to objectively assess mental workload. The subjects have to finish the test and then a questionnaire," Lu said. "But in the future, if we can implement some lightweight machine learning model directly on a microprocessor in the Bluetooth chip on e-tattoo, then yes, our goal is to one day be able to do it in real time."
A report by Grand View Research said that the global wearable technology market was worth $84.2 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $186.14 billion by 2030, underscoring consumers' willingness to integrate technology into their everyday lives.
However, electronic tattoos won't be commercial anytime soon. Lu and her fellow researchers are still conducting tests on and developing the tech.
Still, she can imagine a world where the e-tattoo is used by people not employed in high-stakes jobs.
It could be used by "people who would like to focus as well as people who want to meditate to see if they are truly relaxed," Lu said.

The Air Force is looking to buy two Cybertrucks for "live missile fire testing." It said the Tesla pickups were "likely" to start appearing on the battlefield. It added that they don't "receive the normal extent of damage expected upon major impact." The US Air Force wants to blow up some Cybertrucks. It's looking to buy two of them to use for munitions testing as they will "likely" soon start appearing on the battlefield, per documents posted on a US Government contracting website on Wednesday. The pickups are part of a larger order of 33 vehicles for "live missile fire testing" at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The contract stipulates that the Cybertrucks need only be towable, not functional, and their batteries must be removed. The procurement documents were first reported by the defense blog The War Zone. In a separate document justifying why the Tesla vehicles were specifically required, the contracting officer said that US adversaries were "likely" to begin using the stainless steel-clad trucks on the battlefield due to their durability. "In the operating theatre it is likely the type of vehicles used by the enemy may transition to Tesla Cybertrucks as they have been found not to receive the normal extent of damage expected upon major impact," the document says. The Air Force and Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, said the pickup was built to be "apocalypse proof" when it launched in 2023. Amjad Masad, Replit's CEO, said the era of solo software creation has arrived, and all it takes is a few hours and a good prompt. "You can just have a prompt and have an app," he said on an episode of the "Big Technology Podcast" published Wednesday. "I'd say at least set an afternoon to give it some good effort and try to get your first app. And once you do that, you just get it," he added. Replit, which lets users build applications through AI-assisted prompts and code autocomplete tools, has seen explosive growth. The company said its annual recurring revenue soared from $10 million at the end of 2024 to over $100 million by mid-2025, marking a tenfold increase in under six months Masad referred to this shift as " vibe coding" — a term used to describe building software by writing natural language prompts that AI turns into functional code. While it lowers the barrier to entry, it still requires time and iteration, he said. "People need to invest effort. It's not magic," he said. "You still need to learn prompt engineering, iterate, and understand that AI models have randomness — like temperature settings." Vibe coding is unlocking new opportunities for non-technical creators, Masad said, citing users ranging from HR professionals to doctors and Uber drivers. "Everyone in the world has ideas," he said. "And people build so much domain knowledge about whatever their field of work, right? But they never were able to make it into software because they didn't have the skill, and maybe they didn't have the capital." In one case, Masad said a British doctor built a comprehensive health-tracking app for under £100, or about $133, despite an agency quoting it £100,000, or $133,000. Masad believes this new wave of one-person startups could help reverse declining entrepreneurship across the country. "If you're trying to build a company that generates a great living — where even you get rich from it — I think we're almost there," he said. Solo entrepreneurs are turning vibe coding into real income The rise of tools like Replit is giving solo creators unprecedented leverage, and it's already changing lives. Take Rebecca Beach, a former UX designer who doubled her income to up to $20,000 a month selling AI-generated digital products. "Before I started vibe coding, it could've taken me weeks or months to create a single course or printable," she previously told Business Insider. "Now I can create a printable workbook in under 20 minutes." Therese Waechter, owner of the online sticker shop Otto's Grotto, said vibe coding helped her improve her Shopify storefront, add custom features, and double her revenue. "I coded in a wholesale catalog and added customizations for listings without developer help," she told Business Insider. "I think these features increased trust in my brand for government clients and retail stores, and boosted my conversion rate for high-profit items." Even total beginners are diving in. Business Insider's Alistair Barr built a working e-commerce site with his daughter in six hours using the AI tool Bolt. The pair used natural language prompts to add payment integrations and launch a live store without writing a single line of code themselves. Still, not everyone sees vibe coding as a total replacement for software engineering. Speaking on the sidelines of VivaTech in Paris in June, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke said that while AI makes it easier to launch startups, a "non-technical founder will find it difficult to build a startup at scale without developers." Bob McGrew, the former research chief at OpenAI, echoed that point in June, saying prototypes made through vibe coding still need to be "rewritten from scratch" by human engineers.
