Feminist icon Mary Wollstonecraft still making waves 200 years on
The playwright behind a musical about Mary Wollstonecraft has said more people are taking inspiration from the feminist icon, two centuries after her death.Maureen Lennon wrote Mary and the Hyenas in tribute to the literary pioneer, who is known for her trailblazing work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, published in 1792.The musical will be performed at Wilton's Music Hall in London from 18 March, after debuting at Hull Truck Theatre.Ms Lennon, from Hull, said: "It's not until around now that we're rediscovering and remembering what a huge legacy she has."
She added: "Of course, in feminism people have always championed her and she's provided an inspiration to so many, but only in the last few years is she starting to be as widely known as we would expect."Wollstonecraft was born in 1759 and raised in the East Yorkshire town of Beverley. A Vindication of the Rights of Woman argued women were not naturally inferior to men, but only appeared to be because they did not have the same access to education.
Wollstonecraft went on to spend time in Paris during the French Revolution. She died in 1797, aged 38, just days after the birth of her second daughter, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, who would go on to write Frankenstein. Ms Lennon said there were parallels between Wollstonecraft's time and the modern era.Songs in her musical call out how women are treated in love and the pressure to be independent and perfect.Speaking about feminism in the modern day, Ms Lennon said there was still a notion of women "having to be polite and compliant" in society. "I think we can all identify with that feeling of being 'too much' for the world, particularly if you're a woman."Mary really paves the way there about not apologising for that and that's something that I've really tried to hold on to when you're searching for bravery," she said.Ms Lennon also said she believed there was a "huge issue" within the playwrighting industry, with women "still not being given the same opportunities" as men.

Liam Gallagher and children join forces for huge campaign ahead of Oasis tour
Liam Gallagher has posed with three of his children for a mega Burberry advert just weeks before he's due to hit the road with Oasis, and it's a fitting campaign Liam Gallagher's kids are a chip off the old block as they perfected his moody glare for a fitting Burberry campaign. The Oasis frontman joined forces with his three oldest children, Molly Moorish-Gallagher, 27, and sons Lennon, 25, and Gene, 23, for the photoshoot. The hitmaker and his children are fronting Burberry's Festival campaign ahead of a summer of live music - including Oasis' hotly anticipated reunion tour. Next month Liam and his older brother Noel will take to the stage at Cardiff's Principality Stadium – 16 years after the band split. It's claimed that Liam, 52, has signed a staggering £1million with the global fashion brand for their collection, which pays homage to British identities and live music. Posing in front of a motorhome, Liam and his children all modelled waterproofs from the collection – and it's no surprise he was wearing his signature Parka coat. Meanwhile, daughter Molly exuded festival glamour and style in a similar parka and a pair of matching wellies. Eldest son Lennon, lead singer of the band Automotive, rocked a classic Burberry tartan rainmac and shorts, and despite the collection being for a festival, opted for a more modest pair of trainers and black socks. Gene, who fronts the band Villanelle, kept his look very relaxed but stylish in a striking green jacket, which he completed with a more suiting pair of black trousers and boots. Although the collection was originally released in the summer of 2018, Liam's Christopher Bailey-designed jacket is being re-released this July ahead of Oasis's widely anticipated return. Lennon's look bears a striking similarity to his dad in the 1995 music video for Oasis's mega-anthem, Wonderwall. The campaign echoes Burberry as the go-to look at festivals, with the likes of Glastonbury, Isle of Wight and Reading and Leeds coming up in the next few months. "Burberry sits at the centre of the summer calendar," said Chief Creative Officer Daniel Lee. He added: "It's both a means of creative expression and a go-to uniform for festival goers." Reflecting on the campaign, Lee added: "Think of the campaign like a collage. Capturing off-duty fans and headline acts in between gigs." With Liam and his kids fronting the campaign, alongside names such as producer and DJ Goldie, Alexa Chung and Cara Delevingne, it's certainly fit to be rolled straight out for festival season. Meanwhile, videos have circulated on social media, with audio clips of the band apparently rehearsing the anthems Cigarettes & Alcohol and Fade Away. He told fans that it was his idea to have both songs on the setlist for the most anticipated tour.
