Lane was 32 when she was murdered Aug. 2, 1988, in the Cordova apartment she shared with a woman who was Hunt's cousin.

Prosecutors said Hunt broke into her apartment and killed her after sexually abusing her. A physician who performed an autopsy testified that she died from blunt force trauma and that Lane had sustained some 60 injuries, including 20 to the head.

A jury on June 19, 1990, found Hunt guilty of capital murder during sexual abuse and burglary. Jurors recommended by a vote of 11-1 that he receive a death sentence, which a judge imposed.
Hunt's final request for a stay of execution, which he filed himself, focused on claims that prosecutors made false statements to jurors about evidence of sexual abuse. The element of sexual abuse is what elevated the crime to a death penalty offense.

In a filing to the U.S. Supreme Court, Hunt, acting as his own attorney, wrote that a prosecutor told jurors that cervical mucus was on a broomstick near Hunt's body. However, the victim did not have a cervix because of an earlier hysterectomy. The Alabama attorney general's office called the claim meritless and said even if the prosecutor erred in that statement, it did not throw the conviction into doubt.
Hunt, speaking by telephone last month from prison, did not dispute killing Lane but maintained he did not sexually assault her. He also described himself as someone who was changed by prison.
'Karen didn't deserve what happened to her,' Hunt said.
Hunt said he had been drinking and doing drugs on the night of the crime and became jealous when he saw Lane in a car with another man.
'You have your come-to-Jesus moment. Of course, after the fact, you can't believe what has happened. You can't believe you were part of it and did it,' Hunt said.
Hunt, who was born in 1960 and came to death row in 1990, is now among the longest-serving inmates on Alabama's death row. He said prison became his 'hospital' to heal his broken mind. He said since 1988, he has been leading a Bible class attended by two dozen or more inmates.
'Just trying to be a light in a dark place, trying to tell people if I can change, they can too. ... become people of love instead of hate,' he said.
Lane's sister declined to comment when reached by telephone. The family is expected to give a written statement Tuesday night.
'The way she was killed is just devastating,' Denise Gurganus, Lane's sister, told TV station WBRC at a 2014 vigil for crime victims. 'It's hard enough to lose a family member to death, but when it's this gruesome.'

The Alabama attorney general's office, in asking justices to reject Hunt's request for a stay of execution, wrote that Hunt has now been on death row longer than Lane was alive.
Alabama last year became the first state to carry out an execution with nitrogen gas. Nitrogen has now been used in five executions — four in Alabama and one in Louisiana. The method involves using a gas mask to force an inmate to breathe pure nitrogen gas, depriving them of the oxygen needed to stay alive.
Hunt had named nitrogen as his preferred execution method. He made the selection before Alabama had developed procedures for using gas. Alabama also allows inmates to choose lethal injection or the electric chair.

Texas Target store shooter fired randomly and had a history of mental illness, police say

AUSTIN, Texas — A shooting outside a Target store in Texas that killed three people, including a 4-year-old girl and her grandfather, began with the gunman randomly firing on an employee collecting shopping carts and set in motion a terrifying sequence of stolen cars and crashes that ended with him arrested naked holding a Bible, police said Tuesday. Austin police said Ethan Nieneker, 32, killed the Target worker then opened fire on the grandfather and his granddaughter before stealing their sport utility vehicle. The violence sent store employees and shoppers fleeing for cover. Police Chief Lisa Davis said Nieneker had a history of mental health problems, but she was unaware of any specific diagnosis. Court records show he also had a history of arrests for domestic violence and assault 'What happened yesterday was an unprovoked and deliberate attack, a deliberate act of violence,' Davis said at a news conference. 'Innocent lives were taken in broad daylight in a place where people should feel safe to run their everyday errands and to live their everyday lives.' Police said that the Target employee, Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, 24, was taken to a hospital where he died. Adam Chow, 65, and his granddaughter were pronounced dead at the scene while Chow's wife sustained minor injuries. The name of the child was not released. In the hour after the shootings, Nieneker caused multiple car crashes, tried to steal a water truck, stole a woman's vehicle and assaulted her in the process, Sgt. Nathan Sexton said. Niekeker also tried to get inside a Waymo self-driving taxi, went to the home of an acquaintance and vandalized it, and was later spotted in a residential backyard without his clothes on, the officer said. Officers found Neineker walking naked after he ditched his clothes in a portable toilet, police said. He was holding a Bible and was subdued with a Taser when he would not comply with demands. 'He said that he was Jesus,' Sexton said. Police said Nieneker has been charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of murder. Jail records do not list an attorney for him. Online court records show he had a history of arrests for domestic violence and assault, and was arrested several times in recent years in both Travis County, which includes Austin, and neighboring Williamson County. His arrests in Travis County included misdemeanors for criminal mischief and driving while intoxicated, and three arrests on felony domestic violence charges. He was convicted of a charge of assault causing bodily injury family violence in 2016 and briefly sentenced to jail. Another charge within days of the 2016 episode was dismissed, according to court records. It was not immediately clear if those two charges were related. Another charge of felony assault on a family or household member in 2019 was dismissed three years later when prosecutors could not locate the victim. Williamson County records show repeated run-ins with law enforcement, including two cases of misdemeanor family violence in 2015 that were later dismissed. He was also convicted of possession of marijuana in 2012 and entered a no contest plea to a charge of criminal mischief in 2016. Monday's shooting came as back-to-school shopping was in full swing ahead of the upcoming academic year. It also comes just over two weeks after an attack at a Walmart store in Michigan. A man accused of stabbing 11 people at the Traverse City store on July 26 has been charged with terrorism and multiple counts of attempted murder.

1-year-old girl found dead in hearse was strangled by mom, Alabama cops say

A mom is accused of killing her 1-year-old daughter and leaving her body in a hearse outside an Alabama funeral home, according to authorities. Terica Pearl, 29, is now charged with capital murder, according to the Gadsden Police Department and Etowah County jail records. A young child was found dead in a vehicle outside the West Gadsden Funeral Home the morning of Aug. 9, police said in a news release. The funeral home's director, Dantez Robinson, went on Facebook Live to explain that he hadn't locked the hearse the night before. Then in the morning, the funeral home groundskeeper went to move the hearse when he noticed a dead toddler inside. 'He was just shocked,' Robinson said. The groundskeeper called him, and Robinson said he was in disbelief until he saw the scene for himself, then he called the police. Officers arrived and said they began investigating with 'little to no information to work from' at first. But less than 12 hours later, police arrested the child's mother, according to WBRC. She was booked in jail at around 2 a.m. Aug. 10. Court records revealed the 1-year-old had been strangled to death with a 'thick robe string,' reported. Robinson, who identified himself as the assistant coroner for Etowah County, said he's witnessed a lot of deaths as part of his job. 'But to see something like this, really sent me into another level of shock,' he said. Gadsden is about a 60-mile drive northeast from Birmingham.
