Are robots going to replace human surgeons soon? Here's what Musk predicts

Do you remember the 2013 movie Elysium, where a robotic machine cured a critically ill patient within seconds? That sci-fi scene may not be far from reality. Robots could soon perform surgeries—one of the most delicate and complex tasks traditionally handled by humans.
'Robots will surpass good human surgeons within a few years and the best human surgeons within ~5 years,' billionaire Elon Musk predicted in a post on X.
Citing a Neuralink experiment involving robotic surgery, Musk added: '@Neuralink had to use a robot for the brain-computer electrode insertion, as it was impossible for a human to achieve the required speed and precision.'

Medtronic's Hugo robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) system supported 137 surgeries across multiple hospitals as part of the company's Expand URO clinical study—the largest of its kind for robotic-assisted urologic surgery.
The company reported excellent results. According to RTT News, the study met its main safety and effectiveness goals.
3.7 per cent for prostate removal (prostatectomy)
1.9 per cent for kidney removal (nephrectomy)
17.9 per cent for bladder removal (cystectomy)
All results were better than benchmarks based on prior research.
Additionally, 98.5 per cent of the surgeries were successful—well above the 85 per cent target. Only two surgeries had to be converted to a different method: one due to a device issue and another due to patient anatomy.
The rise of brain-computer interface technology
Meanwhile, Musk's company Neuralink is testing brain-computer interface technology in clinical trials, aiming to help people with paralysis or neurological disorders control devices with their minds.
The technology is not yet publicly available, but three people have received Neuralink implants so far.

One recipient, Brad Smith, recently shared a video showing how the implant helps him. Despite being paralysed, he can now use a MacBook and communicate again through the device.
As Musk and medical innovators like Medtronic push the boundaries of what's possible, the question remains: Will robots soon replace human surgeons—or just make them better?

More than two dozen Indian scientists and researchers are in the list of over 650 experts chosen to write the seventh assessment report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which is expected to be published in 2029. The IPCC assessment reports, or ARs, are the most comprehensive contemporary scientific understanding of the planet's climate system, the changes it is undergoing, and the impact it is having on the Earth and its inhabitants. These reports are produced in a five to seven years cycle and represent the state of knowledge of the climate system at that time. The different parts of the sixth assessment report, or AR6, were released between 2021 and 2023. Like previous reports, the AR7 would comprise three working groups, each producing a report of its own — Working Group I on the physical science basis of climate change, Working Group II on impacts, adaptation and vulnerability, and Working Group III on mitigation of climate change. There are nine Indian scientists and researchers in Working Group I and III and eight Working Group II. Three scientists from Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, which hosts a Centre for Climate Change Research, are part of the group, the highest among Indian institutions. The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), have two people each in the list. Several of these have contributed to previous assessment reports as well. A few Indians are working in other countries. A similar number of Indians, in the range of 20-30, have been part of the earlier assessment reports. The contributors to the assessment reports are initially nominated by country governments, which can propose as many names as they like.

UIDAI onboards satcom major Starlink for Aadhar-based customer verification
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has onboarded satellite-based internet provider Starlink for customer verification, it said in a statement on Wednesday. Starlink Satellite Communication Pvt Ltd has been appointed as a sub-authentication user agency and sub-eKYC user agency. Promoted by US tech billionaire Elon Musk, Starlink is the world's largest space-based communication company, with a presence in over 125 countries. It got a license to operate satellite based broadband in India back in June. Starlink will now use Aadhaar authentication to verify customers, in a move that will make the entire process smooth, secure and very easy, UIDAI said. Calling the partnership a powerful synergy, UIDAI said global satellite technology powered Aadhaar e-KYC will facilitate the onboarding of users seamlessly, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements while delivering high-speed internet to households, businesses, and institutions. Aadhaar authentication by users will happen on a voluntary basis as per the existing rules. "The use of Aadhaar authentication by a global satellite internet provider demonstrates the scalability and reliability of India's digital infrastructure. It highlights how Aadhaar can enable innovation in service delivery while ensuring transparency and accountability," UIDAI face authentication solution is now gaining momentum faster due to its ease of usage and convenience for Aadhaar number holders, UIDAI said.

UIDAI, Starlink partner for Aadhaar-based customer verification
New Delhi: Billionaire Elon Musk-led Starlink will use Aadhaar authentication for customer verification in the country before onboarding them, an official statement said on Wednesday. The government has given approval to Starlink to start providing satellite-based broadband services in the country. "The Unique Identification Authority of India ( UIDAI ) has onboarded satellite-based internet provider Starlink Satellite Communication Pvt Ltd. Starlink will use Aadhaar Authentication for customer verification, which will make the entire process smooth, secure and very easy," the statement said. Starlink can onboard around 20 lakh customers in India at present capacity, according to an official estimate. "Starlink's onboarding with Aadhaar authentication signifies a powerful synergy: India's trusted digital identity joining hands with global satellite technology. Aadhaar e-KYC will facilitate the onboarding of users seamlessly, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements while delivering high-speed internet to households, businesses, and institutions," the statement said. The appointment of Starlink Satellite Communication as a sub-authentication user agency and sub-eKYC user agency was done in the presence of UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar , UIDAI Deputy Director General Manish Bhardwaj, and Starlink India Director Parnil Urdhwareshe. Starlink has partnered with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to sell its services in the country.
