
Nearly a third of 211 callers in P.E.I. last year asked for help related to cost of living
Nearly 30 per cent of the calls received by the 211 service on Prince Edward Island in 2024 were related to the cost of living, the organization says.
211 P.E.I. is a navigation service associated with the United Way that links people with community resources, government support and non-profit programs. The service is offered in other jurisdictions across Canada and the United States as well.
When someone on P.E.I. hits the numbers 2-1-1 on a phone, they reach a community resource navigator who will help find the services they are looking for.
"Our navigators work really hard with people to make sure they're getting the right information to direct them to the right place," said Ghislaine O'Hanley, the 211 educator with 211 P.E.I.
She said concerns about dealing with the high cost of living accounted for 29.3 of their calls last year. Other top requests involved finding mental health and addiction supports and access to primary health care.
O'Hanley said people can sometimes feel frustrated because there are so many services available but it's hard to decipher which ones apply to their particular situation.
"At 211, we like to say, 'We're the right door the first time,'" she said.
Navigators trained to 'walk the walk' with callers
Paula Rent, the co-ordinator of service quality and training for 211 on P.E.I. and Nova Scotia, said one local community navigator in Prince Edward Island receives the vast majority of calls from Islanders. Nova Scotia navigators will also get P.E.I. calls, though.
During five weeks of training, she said, new navigators will learn how to respond to a call and figure out the caller's needs.
"We want them to know that although we may not be in their position, we will walk the walk with them and the journey with them," she said of callers to 211.
Having used 211 in the past to find support for a family member, O'Hanley said the navigator's gift is to provide support.
"I think it's really important to feel supported in your community and to know that there are people there that have your best interest at heart and are there to help," she said.
'Appreciate being part of that'
The Salvation Army is one of the many services to which Islanders calling 211 can be referred.
Lt. John Burton, the corps officer with the Salvation Army's Charlottetown Community Church, says the number of people accessing its breakfast club and food bank has risen about 30 per cent since last year.
The Salvation Army doesn't track who gets referred to the organization by 211, but Burton said he knows the system is working.
"We often get calls from 211 to say, 'Hey, can you update your information with us?' And so they're on the ball," he said. "They're keen to be able to serve this community. And we appreciate being part of that."
In addition, Burton said it's essential to have the ability to connect people with multiple services through one hub.

"If someone needs food or a hot meal or housing, or help with their rent or whatever, they can direct them."
O'Hanley said 211 tries to connect all Island callers to the services they need. However, if people are asking for help that's not available, she said the organization will track the data, present it to government, and see what can be done to provide the needed support.

Beloved CKCO host's legacy continues
The legacy of a former CKCO host lives on with the return of a beloved event. Despite the rain early Thursday morning, nothing could dampen the enthusiasm at the Betty Thompson Golf Classic. The event is an annual tradition run by the Zonta Club of Kitchener-Waterloo. Thompson spent most of her career at CKCO in Kitchener. She was also one of the founding members of the local chapter of the Zonta Club. Throughout her life, her passion for the community was clear as she took on roles at the Salvation Army, the John Howard Society, the Victorian Order of Nurses and the United Way, among others. In 1990 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Betty turned her personal tragedy into a public campaign focused on educating women about the importance of regular breast examinations. She was still alive when the Betty Thompson Golf Classic first began in 1992. She died two years later. Despite her death, her indelible mark on the community remains, inspiring others to continue giving back. 'All the money raised is kept locally in our community and all to do with projects involving women and girls,' Brenda Graham, co-chair of the Betty Thompson Golf Classic, said. Throughout the years, the event has raised over $1.3 million. The goal this year was $50,000. 'Last year we raised $48,000, so we had that money to give back to local projects. We received over $250,000 in applications from various organizations, all with projects for women and girls, that needed funds. We have to pick and choose what we can do and how much we can do. The need is so great,' Graham said.

Dismantled ByWard Market encampment highlights need for housing, advocates say
A new encampment in the ByWard Market has a local councillor calling for long-term strategies from the city and the Salvation Army. CTV's Katie Griffin reports. A small encampment in the ByWard Market that was dismantled Friday is highlighting the urgent need for housing and permanent solutions to a growing crisis in Ottawa and across the province. Three tents were set up on a median on George Street between Cumberland and Dalhousie streets across from the Salvation Army. 'They've been there, I believe, since Wednesday last week and the encampment has grown,' said Rideau-Vanier Coun. Stephanie Plante. Plante spoke with those living in the tents and says they're clients of the Salvation Army. 'Where do we expect people to go? There's no place safe if they are using to use, with the closure of the supervised injection sites,' said Kaite Burkholder Harris, the executive director of the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa. 'And just as much as I realize the intention of these bills, none of this is going to help people. It's going to displace people and the 'problem', and a lot of people are going to be harmed by it.' Alta Vista Coun. Marty Carr says there are encampments in almost every ward. 'It is a lack of investment that has happened in housing and mental health and treatment for many, many years,' Carr said. 'This is a public health crisis as much as it is a homelessness crisis.' The city says those living in encampments are offered 'shelter services, health and social supports, and assistance in securing safe, stable housing.' 'The decision to dismantle an encampment is only made once all efforts to support the person have been exhausted,' said Kale Brown, the interim director of Housing and Homelessness Services. But it just goes to show that we need all levels of government to really, really prioritize housing and whatever budgets they're putting forward on this file.'
