Barry Hilton: Comedy as a survival mechanism

It's classic Barry Hilton - sharp, self-deprecating, and just on the edge
Image: Supplied
For years, Barry Hilton has been the beloved comedic voice of South Africa, effortlessly blending sharp wit with self-deprecating humour. But beneath the laughter lies a profound truth: for Hilton, comedy has not just been a performance; it has been a survival mechanism. Now, with his latest project, Barry Hilton in 3D (depression, dyslexia, ADHD), Hilton invites audiences on a deeply personal journey — one that transcends his trademark punchlines.
In recent times, Hilton has taken a big step forward to address the complexities of mental health through humour. After enduring silent years of battling Depression, Dyslexia, and ADHD, he experienced a pivotal moment. 'I broke down,' he recalls, 'and that breakdown turned into a breakthrough.' What followed was a newfound commitment to connection and honesty, propelling him on a mission to mentor others by shedding light on his struggles rather than hiding behind the laughter.
Humour as a healing tool
In a country where humour serves as a habitual defence mechanism, Barry Hilton in 3D aims to offer much more. Instead of mere entertainment, it delivers insights, empathy, and strategies designed to foster understanding around mental health challenges. 'We've got to start checking in on the 'happy one' - the class clown, the team joker. Sometimes, they're the ones carrying the heaviest load,' says Hilton, emphasising the need to look beyond the laughter.

His engaging session promises practical lessons aimed at cultivating resilience, enhancing team culture, and recognising the subtle signs of distress in colleagues – particularly those who always appear 'fine'. This notion is especially timely in the wake of a global pandemic that has shifted social dynamics, pushing many to mask their struggles behind digital screens or forced smiles.
Hilton's talk resonates in multiple contexts — from corporate boardrooms to school gymnasiums, addressing workplace wellness, youth mental health, and the challenges of learning differences such as Dyslexia and ADHD. His message shines brightly, reminding us that we are all navigating waves of uncertainty, with some of us laughing on the outside while struggling on the inside.

Cooking for love: Tom Holland uses his chef brother's recipes to impress fiancée Zendaya

"Spiderman" actor Tom Holland cooks vegetarian meals for his wife-to-be Zendaya. Image: Instagram. Tom Holland is making sure his fiancée, Zendaya, is well fed, and it's all thanks to his brother, Sam Holland. In a recent interview, Sam, who is a chef and will soon be releasing his debut cookbook, said that he sends Tom tailor-made plant-based recipes for him to cook for his busy wife-to-be. "I'm especially proud of the veggie section. Zendaya has a plant-based diet, and I sent those recipes Tom's way as he was on dinner duty while she was making a movie in Boston. "He went through them one by one and really enjoyed them," Sam told the magazine. Sam, who often helms the family's Christmas dinners, insists that his recipes are easy and meant for any level of cook, even the "Spiderman" star. He said his brothers, including his twin Harry, their younger brother, Paddy, and Tom, could manage to make decent versions of these meals, even though "they are all probably a bit worse than beginner cooks". From meal prep tips to speedy dinners and fakeaway favourites, this book is all about making great food without the faff. "No fancy ingredients, no complicated techniques, just good food that fits into real life." However, back in December on the "Dish" podcast, the "Spider-Man" actor shared that he enjoys experimenting in the kitchen, particularly with vegetarian meals. He added that he is a "fine cook". "I'm starting to like, venture into a lot of vegetarian cooking. My girlfriend's vegetarian. I've been in Boston these past few weeks and she's been working, so I've been doing a lot of the dinners,' Tom explained at the time. Still, he admitted that not every dish was a win: "They haven't been great. There's been a few like, 'Let's just order in'." During the interview, Tom was asked about his favourite dish. He shared: "I actually love Zendaya's spicy vodka fusilli thingamajiggy that she does. It's delicious." Tom, who proposed to Zendaya in 2024, also credited his brother Sam for elevating the Holland family's culinary traditions. "My brother Sam is a chef, and each Christmas dinner is getting better and better and better. It's something that I always look forward to ... Bless him, it's a big undertaking, but he's getting great at it." Watch snippets of the podcast below.

South African dad declares 'no more noodles' in viral TikTok family meeting

Father calls a family meeting declaring that he will no longer be buying noodles. Image: Screenshot / TikTok 'No more noodles!' A South African dad is fed up with everyone in his family constantly eating noodles, so he has demanded that no more noodles be bought when they go grocery shopping over the weekend. With over two million views, the clip of the family meeting called by the dad has gone viral on TikTok. The Mzansi's Greatest Family, who have over a million followers, are well known for sharing funny videos. In this instance, the dad shares his frustration about how many noodles everyone in the family eats and the fact that, because of the noodles, they are no longer sitting down as a family to have meals together. What bugs him even more is that no one, including the mom, cooks anymore. After the children protest about this new rule, he admits that he also likes noodles, but remains adamant that he no longer wants them in the house. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ He points out that since the children simply make the noodles and eat them in their rooms, they no longer sit down and eat as a family. While he doesn't have a problem with noodles being an in-between meal, he no longer wants them served for dinner. Even though he directs the request for more home-cooked meals to the whole family, he specifically turns to his wife, saying, 'Sometimes, my love, you don't cook.' The family, clearly up in arms about this decision, are told to speak to him one-on-one to discuss the matter further as he concludes the family meeting. Followers of the popular TikTok family were impressed with the father's leadership skills, while others felt the meeting was subtly directed at the mom for not cooking as much as he would like her to. 'The subject of the meeting was the mom, the kids were there for his protection,' said one viewer. Another wrote: 'This was a strategy to address 'my love', so everyone had to get involved.' Noodles have become a winning dish for many, especially when it comes to little ones. They are quick and easy to make, and of course, there's the slurping that kids adore. Kelvin Momo fails to show up for his scheduled performance at Sun City Resort

Sun City Resorts has taken to social media to reveal that top music producer and DJ Kelvin Momo failed to pitch for his scheduled performance. Image: Independent Newspapers/Timothy Bernard South African music producer and DJ, Kelvin Momo, is back in the news for missing a booked performance. Sun City Resorts, on Saturday, had to rush into crisis mode when, at the eleventh hour, Kelvin Momo ditched them for their Outside event. In a statement, Sun City Resorts shared with attendees that Kelvin Momo would not perform at the event as scheduled, after not arriving for the show despite being contracted, booked and paid for. 'Neither Momo nor his manager have responded to any of Sun City's requests for an update. We, along with our partners, have exhausted every avenue possible to ensure that he performs,' read the statement. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The DJ has garnered a reputation for not showing up for his booked gigs. Before his Red Bull Symphonic show, fans were anxious about whether he would make the gigs, as he had missed three scheduled performances. At the time, Momo's management team released a statement acknowledging the missed gigs, but they have been mum about Kelvin Momo missing the Sun City Resorts performance. The Outside event was, however, saved by Murdah Bongz, who performed. The DJ and musician is signed to the same management, TSquared Productions, as Kelvin Momo. In July, TSquared Productions released a statement making fans aware of a booking scam being by HDS Concepts or Devon, accepting false booking, emphasiszing that the claims were false and misleading. The team further clarified that all legitimate bookings and engagements for Momo go through them (TSquared Productions), and warned fans and promoters to verify any inquiries through official channels. IOL has reached out to TSquared Productions for a right of reply, as to why the Sun City Resorts Outside gig wasnt adhered to by Kelvin Momo. This article will be updated when a response is recieved.
