Kenanga IB sees limited impact on Scientex from US tariffs
KUALA LUMPUR: Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd (Kenanga IB) expects only minimal direct impact from the US tariffs threat for Scientex Bhd as the group has a manufacturing plant in the United States, making its exports to the US below five per cent of its total revenue.
Kenanga IB said management had guided on a challenging outlook for its plastic packaging segment given global economic and tariffs uncertainties and aggressive competition in the market.
"As the price of crude oil has surged more than 10 per cent lately largely due to the latest escalations of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, we are monitoring any potential increase in resin price," it said in a note today.
In a Bursa Malaysia filing yesterday, Scientex recorded a lower net profit of RM123.87 million for the third quarter ended April 30, 2025, compared with RM130.50 million in the same period a year ago.
The packaging manufacturer and property developer said lower profit was mainly attributed to lower export sales and foreign exchange losses in the packaging division, which saw its revenue decline by 6.4 per cent to RM614.8 million from RM656.9 million.
For its property division, Kenanga IB said sales of its affordable properties should continue to be resilient given encouraging take-up rates from recent launches.
The group's unbilled sales stood at RM1.7 billion as of the second quarter of this fiancial year.
"In the past one year, we observe continuous demand for affordable houses priced below the RM500,000 mark while we saw rising appetite for housing in the range of RM500,000 to RM1 million signalling improving affordability," it added.
The research house maintained Scientex as 'market perform' with a higher target price of RM3.60 from RM3.34 previously.
As of 10.53 am, Scientex's share price rose one sen to RM3.35, with 789,00 shares traded on Bursa Malaysia.

Bina Puri eyes first profit since 2019, pins hopes on Sarawak jobs
Bina Puri says it has since focused its efforts on completing these loss-making jobs to ease the burden on future profits. KUCHING (June 19): Bina Puri Holdings Berhad (Bina Puri) is banking on a string of infrastructure jobs in Sarawak to stage its first financial turnaround since 2019. According to TA Securities Bhd (TA Securities) in a note, the pandemic and movement control orders had severely impacted the company's operations especially legacy low-margin infrastructure and building contracts, of which many were forced to halt. Management said it has since focused its efforts on completing these loss-making jobs to ease the burden on future profits. To note, the company posted core losses of RM95 million and RM11 million in FY23 and FY24 respectively. For the first nine months of FY25, its core loss narrowed to just RM38,000. According to management, the company did not secure any new local contracts between 2019 and late 2022. That changed after Chai Chan Tong joined the company in December 2022, acquiring a 20.4 per cent stake and injecting RM14.8 million in fresh capital. He later raised his stake to 23.7 per cent by subscribing to rights shares in April 2023 and took full control of the board following his redesignation as managing director in October 2023. Under Chai, turnaround momentum picked up, with the company securing two road projects in Sarawak in 2023, in Dalat and Samarahan with a combined value of RM176.5 million. In November 2024, it won another Sarawak contract worth RM113.3 million involving water pipeline construction, civil, and structural works. 'From these job wins, it is suffice to say that the company is a strong contender in Sarawak, especially on those small public infrastructure jobs like road, bridge and waterpipe project valued at less than RM200 million,' said TA Securities. The house added that the company is optimistic about securing RM500 million worth of new contracts each year on the back of Chai's strong network and experience in the state. Management guided that competition for sub-contract works in Sarawak remains mild that allows the company to maintain its operating margin at a reasonable five per cent. 'Currently, the company is actively negotiating and tendering for new jobs worth RM3.8 billion in Sarawak,' added the house. As of the first quarter of FY25, Bina Puri's outstanding order book stood at RM551 million with nearly RM230 million of that secured under the current management. These newer jobs are expected to carry higher margins compared to the RM325 million backlog from before Chai's leadership. Importantly, the completion of several unprofitable projects such as the Malaysian Embassy in Moscow, a dual-lane road in Southern Iraq, and the near-completion of the Nepal Supreme Court building, is expected to ease pressure on the company's earnings. The Bangkok high-speed rail project, though far from completion, has already been sub-contracted on a fixed-sum basis to China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) thus reducing financial exposure. Looking ahead, TA Securities projects a turnaround in FY25 with a core profit of RM7.8 million. This is expected to grow by 69.2 per cent to RM13.2 million in FY26 and by 11.4 per cent to RM14.7 million in FY27. All told, FY25 is seen as a critical year for Bina Puri's new management to prove its ability to complete legacy projects while securing new, higher-margin jobs especially in Sarawak to support long-term prospect. It also advises risk-averse investors to adopt a wait-and-see approach as the company transitions under its new leadership. Bina Puri construction corporate news

Ai-CHA sets record with 300 new outlets in one year
KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesia-based ice cream and tea brand, Ai-CHA, created history when it received two recognitions from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for 'Most Ice Cream Shop Chains Opened in a Year' and 'Most Beverage Shop Chains Opened in a Year'. To date, 300 Ai-CHA branches have opened in Malaysia over the past 12 months, with an average of almost one new branch every day. Ai-CHA also received the 2025/2026 Consumer Choice Award from the National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) presented by the council's deputy president, Prof Jericho Tang Kit Wai. Ai-CHA global deputy general manager Danny Tahardi said the recognition proves its commitment to excellence in the highly competitive food and beverage (F&B) industry. 'This success is a catalyst for us to continue to strive to maintain our position as a trusted brand in the local and international markets,' he said during the MBR and MTPN recognition ceremony today. Meanwhile, Ai-CHA Malaysia director Vincent Ong said the extraordinary success was the result of the strong support of the local people as well as the effectiveness of Ai-CHA's investor-friendly franchise model. 'Ai-CHA has successfully expanded to various locations from major cities to areas that are less covered by international brands. 'These recognitions have further reinforced Ai-CHA's commitment to quality and rapid growth driven by an investor-friendly franchise model, where the initial investment is less than RM100,000,' he said. Having reached 300 branches, Ai-CHA now plans to expand its operations to suburban and rural areas, particularly in East Malaysia where consumer demand is high but competition is low. Ai-CHA, which currently operates in nine countries, also plans to introduce snacks such as fried chicken and french fries at selected branches, to open up new space for the brand as a preferred destination for casual snacks.
