Ai-CHA sets record with 300 new outlets in one year

The Sun6 hours ago

KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesia-based ice cream and tea brand, Ai-CHA, created history when it received two recognitions from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for 'Most Ice Cream Shop Chains Opened in a Year' and 'Most Beverage Shop Chains Opened in a Year'.
To date, 300 Ai-CHA branches have opened in Malaysia over the past 12 months, with an average of almost one new branch every day.
Ai-CHA also received the 2025/2026 Consumer Choice Award from the National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) presented by the council's deputy president, Prof Jericho Tang Kit Wai.
Ai-CHA global deputy general manager Danny Tahardi said the recognition proves its commitment to excellence in the highly competitive food and beverage (F&B) industry.
'This success is a catalyst for us to continue to strive to maintain our position as a trusted brand in the local and international markets,' he said during the MBR and MTPN recognition ceremony today.
Meanwhile, Ai-CHA Malaysia director Vincent Ong said the extraordinary success was the result of the strong support of the local people as well as the effectiveness of Ai-CHA's investor-friendly franchise model.
'Ai-CHA has successfully expanded to various locations from major cities to areas that are less covered by international brands.
'These recognitions have further reinforced Ai-CHA's commitment to quality and rapid growth driven by an investor-friendly franchise model, where the initial investment is less than RM100,000,' he said.
Having reached 300 branches, Ai-CHA now plans to expand its operations to suburban and rural areas, particularly in East Malaysia where consumer demand is high but competition is low.
Ai-CHA, which currently operates in nine countries, also plans to introduce snacks such as fried chicken and french fries at selected branches, to open up new space for the brand as a preferred destination for casual snacks.

Johor forges strategic pact with Japanese tech firm to build Asean digital talent hub

ISKANDAR PUTER: The Johor government has taken a bold step to anchor itself as Asean's next digital powerhouse by sealing a strategic partnership with Japanese tech firm NEOJAPAN Inc today (June 19). The MoU, inked between Invest Johor chief executive officer Natazha Harris and the Yokohama-based digital solutions provider president Akinori Saito, will pave the way for the Southeast Asian Centre of Excellence (SEA CoE) to be established in the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Japanese Economy Minister Yoji Muto and Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Noriyuki Shikata, the agreement was formalised on the sidelines of the Nikkei Forum Medini Johor 2025. The SEA CoE will serve as a regional training and innovation hub, aiming to upskill more than 1,000 local tech talent in areas such as cloud infrastructure, multilingual IT support and no-code development. The initiative is also set to generate 300 high-skilled jobs, boosting Johor's position as a tech-driven investment destination. "This collaboration aligns perfectly with our goal of turning Johor into a regional hub for digital excellence," Onn Hafiz said. "By fostering innovation, talent development and strategic investments, we believe the JS-SEZ can become a catalyst for Johor's digital economy." NEOJAPAN, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, will contribute its expertise in cloud-based platforms and digital transformation tools, including desknet's NEO, AppSuite and NEOPORT. The partnership signals deepening Malaysia-Japan economic ties and supports Malaysia's wider digitalisation push under the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry's regional strategies.

Govt won't raise price of RON95 amid geopolitical tensions, says PM Anwar

Anwar says that although the price increase benefits the national petroleum company, the government aims to avoid burdening the people with higher fuel costs. – Bernama photo ISKANDAR PUTERI (June 19): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given assurance that the government will not raise the price of RON95 petrol, even if there is a sharp increase in global crude oil prices due to geopolitical tensions involving Iran and Israel. He said that although the price increase benefits the national petroleum company, the government aims to avoid burdening the people with higher fuel costs. 'Oil prices fluctuate. Currently, it is relatively low. (If) there is a sharp increase, the returns are good for Petronas, but it affects other countries. We are not increasing fuel prices,' he said. Anwar, who is also PKR president, told reporters this after a meeting with the Johor PKR leadership here today. At the same time, Anwar stressed that fiscal policies, including the reimplementation of the Sales and Service Tax (SST), must be implemented carefully so as not to pressure the lower-income (B40) and middle-income (M40) groups. 'Sometimes people get confused. For example, it was said that bananas are subject to SST. Actually, it's imported bananas. But we will clarify the matter. The important thing is, we do not want to burden the lower-income group,' he said. He also suggested that government departments and agencies serve local fruits during official functions as a way to support domestic production. 'For official receptions or government office events, use local food and fruits only. It's doable. Let's support local products,' he added. Anwar said the government is open to reviewing the list of goods and services subject to tax if there is confusion or unfairness in its implementation. Commenting further on the issue of SST on educational institutions, the prime minister explained that tax is only imposed on international schools that charge fees above a certain high threshold. 'Regular schools, private schools that charge RM10,000 or RM20,000 are not taxed. But if it's RM60,000 a year, then pay a little tax,' he said. Anwar also stressed that tax revenue will be used to fund public needs such as the construction of schools and the upgrading of public healthcare facilities. 'Wherever I go, hospitals are crowded. Many schools also need repairs. We need funds, and those come from taxes, but not from ordinary citizens. We target the upper class and foreign sectors,' he said. – Bernama crude oil prices Iran Israel local fruits PM Anwar RON95 SST tax

Air India cuts foreign wide-body flights by 15% after crash

NEW DELHI: Air India is reducing its international service using widebody planes by 15% as the nation's flag carrier grapples with the fallout from a fatal Boeing Co. 787 crash last week and an Israel-Iran clash in the Middle East. The cuts will be rolled out through June 20 and will continue until at least mid-July, the carrier said in a press release on Wednesday. The airline also said it would undertake one-time safety inspections across its Boeing 777 fleet as "a matter of added precaution.' In its statement, Air India cited geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, night curfew in the airspaces of countries in Europe and East Asia and the ongoing enhanced safety inspections of its Boeing-built 787 fleet after Thursday's crash. Safety checks ordered by the country's Directorate General of Civil Aviation have been completed on 26 of the 33 Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets operated by Air India, clearing those planes to fly, the airline said. Inspections of the remaining planes will be completed in the coming days, it added. "The curtailments are a painful measure to take, but are necessary following a devastating event which we are still working through and an unusual combination of external events,' Air India said. Investigators are still trying to determine why Air India flight AI171 struggled to gain altitude after takeoff from the western Indian city of Ahmedabad before plunging into a densely populated neighbourhood seconds later, killing all but one of the 242 passengers and crew, as well as dozens more on the ground. The incident ranks as the worst disaster in civil aviation in more than a decade. Search crews sifting through the crash site have pulled the second flight data recorder from the rubble, Bloomberg has reported. The first device was found the day after the crash. Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran told a local TV channel that AI-171 had a clean flight record before the crash. "There are speculations about human error, speculations about airlines, speculations about engines, maintenance, all kinds,' he said. "This particular aircraft, this specific tail, AI-171 has a clean history.' "Both engine histories are clean. Both pilots were exceptional,' he added. The plane's right engine had been installed in March 2025, he said. The left engine was last serviced in 2023 and due for its next maintenance check in December 2025, he added. Chandrasekaran said a preliminary report is expected from crash investigators in 30 days. He also acknowledged that the lack of information about the factors that may have led to the crash has stoked frustration and rumours. "We've got to do a better job at communication,' he said, adding that the carrier installed a strategic communications team in the last three days. - Bloomberg
