Good progress continues to be made on the Northland Expressway, with the emerging preferred corridor for the Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway and the Port Marsden Highway to Whangārei Roads of National Significance now confirmed by NZTA, Transport Minister Chris Bishop and Regional Development Minister Shane Jones say.
'The Waikato Expressway delivered by the last National-led Government has been a game changer for the Waikato region. The Northland Expressway is a genuinely transformational opportunity to boost jobs and growth in an area rich with potential and link Northland to New Zealand's biggest city,' Mr Bishop says.
The Northland Expressway has been divided into three sections:
Warkworth to Te Hana
Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway
Port Marsden Highway to Whangārei
The Warkworth to Te Hana section will be a 26km-long four-lane road, connected to the new Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway and is currently in procurement, following the announcements made at the NZ Infrastructure Investment Summit in March.
'Today NZTA is announcing the emerging preferred corridor from Te Hana to Whangārei, which will deliver a new four-lane, mainly grade-separated route that bypasses key pressure points on the current State Highway 1 (SH1).
'For Section 2, Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway, the emerging preferred corridor is a new route to the east of SH1 between Te Hana and the Brynderwyn Hills, near to the east of SH1 at the Brynderwyn Hills and to the west of SH1 between the Brynderwyn Hills and Port Marsden Highway.
'The Brynderwyn Hills is a very challenging section due to the steepness of terrain and quality of the geology. Alternative options in this location looked at western routes but following further investigation, NZTA has reassessed and found a near east alignment close to SH1. This is a more direct route with more predictable geology that can be managed through engineering design.
'For Section 3, Port Marsden Highway to Whangārei, the emerging preferred corridor is a new road near SH1 between Port Marsden Highway and State Highway 15 Loop Road and a widened SH1 corridor approaching urban Whangārei,' Mr Bishop says.
Mr Jones says the recent bad weather, during which SH1 on the Brynderwyns was partly closed due to a slip, illustrated the urgency required to get work underway.
'The new expressway, which will be designed to better withstand severe weather, will provide a more resilient transport network, keeping people and goods moving and reduce travel time.
'This transport infrastructure is a key point in the New Zealand First-National Coalition Agreement. The Northland Corridor is a top priority for the Government and we are working quickly to deliver this vital connection to help Northland's economy grow and its communities thrive.'
NZTA will be doing further investigation and design refinements and Ministers expect to be able to confirm the preferred route in August or September this year.
This will provide landowners with greater certainty around any impact the project will have on their properties.

Airport hits milestone amid major works programme
Queenstown Airport celebrated its 90th birthday yesterday — one of New Zealand's oldest commercial airports still operating on its original site. In the early 1930s, the people of the Wakatipu Basin were excited by the possibility of connecting with the rest of New Zealand, identifying the disused Frankton racecourse as the perfect location for an official aerodrome, the airport said in a statement. A landing ground licence was granted on August 14, 1935 and contractors were hired to level a grass airstrip. From these humble beginnings, Queenstown Airport has evolved into an international gateway, world-renowned for its spectacular setting. It now welcomes more than 2.6 million passengers a year and has just started the largest infrastructure investment programme in its history. Queenstown Airport Board chairman Simon Flood said it was important to recognise milestones of this magnitude, and to look back with gratitude for the foresight of those who laid the foundation for what we enjoy today. "Airports are important places, and we are proud of our long history and the deep connection we share with our community." Mr Flood said Queenstown Airport was built with entrepreneurial spirit and remains a vital enabler of social and economic wellbeing. "We are carefully managing its growth to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the people and businesses of the Southern Lakes region for decades to come." The land on which Queenstown Airport was established was used as a racecourse from 1863 until about 1920, and the first hangar was built alongside the stone grandstand from which members of the Jockey Club once cheered on their favourite horses. Those buildings can still be seen from Lucas Pl today. The airport's first terminal was a humble building, constructed after the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Co Ltd began flying 32-seat DC-3s between Christchurch and Queenstown in 1964. By the end of the 1960s, the main runway had been sealed and a flight services station established, enabling Hawker-Siddeley 748 flights. Airport interim chief executive Todd Grace said the airport was about to embark on its biggest investment in a generation. Mr Grace said Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) — funded by airlines using the airport — will spend about $350m-$400m over the next five to six years, starting with about $150m over the next three years. First cab off the rank was the Australasia-first installation, completed March, of arresting beds at either end of the main runway to stop aircraft overshooting. A major focus over the next few years will be relocating helicopter and light plane operations to either side of the main runway, and building a taxiway alongside the runway. A new taxiway would help to get aircraft in and out of Queenstown more quickly and safely. Helicopters will then be based north of the runway, where two operators have already set up, and light planes will be on the southern side. There are also plans to upgrade the terminal's baggage handling and check-in facilities, relocate rental car carparks and build a new commercial building to house the airport's own staff as well as some border agencies. From 2028 the existing terminal will expand south, with an expansion in floor capacity of about 25%. Mr Grace predicted jets would get quieter while their capacity would increase. He stressed that despite the airport's major development programme, the idea was still to grow incrementally.

July's BNZ-BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI) rose 3.6 points to a seasonally adjusted 52.8 points, just above the long-term average. A reading above 50 indicates manufacturing was generally expanding, while under 50 indicated a decline. Production, employment, new orders, finished stocks and deliveries were all in expansion. "[The PMI] will need to be sustained or nudge a bit higher to be consistent with our economic forecasts, but it is good to see a move for the better," BNZ senior economist Doug Steel said. He said manufacturers were still facing an increase in United States tariffs, which were set at 15 percent for New Zealand , compared with 10 percent for Australia. Manufacturers were also navigating higher gas prices , up nearly 21 percent in the first quarter over the year earlier. "Given the prevailing headwinds it is, perhaps, even more encouraging that the PMI has moved back into expansion," he said. Kāinga Ora sells off ‘landmark' Wellington Dixon Street Flats

Photo / Mark Mitchell 'After carefully considering the cost and complexities of continuing to use this historic building for social housing, we decided selling it would be the best course of action as it would open up opportunities for others to make use of the building.' Kāinga Ora deputy chief executive central Daniel Soughtton said. Housing Minister Chris Bishop said the sale is 'a good outcome for Wellington'. Bishop revealed cost estimates for remediation and strengthening were costed at more than $125m, more than $1m per apartment. 'Instead of allowing the Dixon Street Flats to become another derelict Wellington eyesore, Taranaki Whānui Limited has purchased the property using their right of first refusal under their Treaty settlement. I look forward to seeing what they do with it,' Bishop said. The iwi have the first right of refusal for Crown land in the area under the Port Nicholson Block Settlement. The agency also noted the high ongoing cost for security on the building. Last year, it said it faced 'significant challenges' with squatters and unauthorised entry, spending $124,012 on security guards between June 3 and August 18. Last year, the agency would not confirm its plans for the site, but a Tenancy Tribunal document showed it was considering selling the property. The Dixon Street Flats have always been used as social housing, being built in the 1940s as a part of the first Labour Government's state housing programme. They were the second block of social housing apartments to ever be built in New Zealand, after the first were completed in Berhampore. The building has the highest level of heritage protection, listed as a Category 1, and is not listed as earthquake-prone on MBIE's earthquake-prone building register. Heritage New Zealand describes the building as an 'archetype of Modernist apartment blocks in New Zealand' that 'marked a new era of domestic architecture'. Photo / Heritage New Zealand Wellington City Heritage said when it was built, the project 'was of a magnitude unprecedented in the history of domestic architecture in New Zealand and caused considerable excitement'. When the building was boarded up last year, chairman of Inner-City Wellington, the local resident's association, Reverend Stephen King urged Kāinga Ora to make progress on the site, saying leaving it vacant is 'outrageous'. 'It's a cornerstone to our inner city residential population', King said at the time. The nearby Gordon Wilson Flats were built in the same era as the Dixon Street Flats as part of the Government's state housing programme.
