Comedian Joe Gatto 'can't wait to have some Cincinnati chili' ahead of his Queen City show

Yahoo10-03-2025

When Joe Gatto last visited Cincinnati just over two years ago, stand-up comedy was "a new challenge" for him.
Now, the former "Impractical Jokers" star is a full-on pro. After dropping his first comedy special, "Messing With People," on Hulu last year, he's currently amid his Let's Get Into It tour, coming to Taft Theatre on Saturday.
"I'm better (than I was), for sure," Gatto said with a laugh.
"I hear all the time, 'Oh, you're actually funny.' I'm like, 'Thanks, I think.' ... The good thing is I'm by myself, so you get a full hour of me. So if you're a fan of me from ('Jokers'), it's the same guy that you saw on the show. I wasn't playing a character on that. So it's interesting that people get to dive in deeper and learn more about me."
Here's more from The Enquirer's conversation with Gatto, including very Cincinnati-themed topics, such as chili and Travis Kelce.
Growing up, Gatto looked to the movies and TV shows for his main sources of comedy. He loved Mel Brooks, and would watch Tim Allen's "Home Improvement" with his father.
Allen's stand-up also ended up being the first stand-up special Gatto ever watched.
"(It was) one of those, my dad was like, 'Don't tell mom we'll watch this,' kind of thing," he said. "I remember that and laughing with my dad, and that being cool to have that experience to be like quoting stuff back and forth with my father."
"Now to be that for people is like is the best, coolest thing in my life."
Gatto is in a competitive industry. There are stars galore in the stand-up comedy scene: Shane Gillis, Kevin Hart and Cincinnati-born Nikki Glaser, just to name a few.
"I think it's great," he said. "I think there's room for everybody. With more stand-ups and more ways to discover them, I think people have more ways to laugh. I do like that people can break out in multiple different fashions now."
"I love when people go to see one of the comics they like ... and then they meet their opener. That's one of the coolest things for me is that people are open to stand-up as a format in a really cool way, because there's just so much talent swimming in the pool."
When asked what fans can expect during a Joe Gatto show, the comedian was honest.
"It's going to be terrible," he joked. "You shouldn't come. I'm trying a reverse psychology thing, let's see if it works. It's going to be the worst night of your life. Don't do it. Don't come out."
In all seriousness, Gatto's shows are about one word: fun.
"They're a night of entertainment where people can just come laugh," he said. "I really pride myself on making that and curating that."
While participating in a game of Cincinnati trivia (for a second time), Gatto discussed a slew of Queen City-themed topics.
He was intrigued with Cincinnati's dish of chili on on top of noodles, saying, "Well, I can't wait to have some Cincinnati chili when I get there."
He, however, doesn't eat meat, but said he'll try some vegetarian chili.
Gatto also chatted about University of Cincinnati football alum Travis Kelce, who appeared on his former show "The Misery Index," which ran from 2019 to 2022. He additionally saw the Chiefs tight end last year at a charity event he goes to in Kansas City every year, called the Big Slick.
"I took a selfie with him, and my daughter was like, 'You know Taylor (Swift's) boyfriend?' I'm like,'Yes, I know Taylor's boyfriend," he said.
Gatto's Taft Theatre show is at 7 p.m. ET Saturday.

Alex Cooper's alma mater responds after she accuses college soccer coach of sexual harassment

Days after Alex Cooper accused her former college soccer coach of sexual harassment, Boston University has responded. The host of the popular 'Call Her Daddy' podcast, who made the allegations in a two-part Hulu documentary that premiered Tuesday after screening Sunday at the Tribeca Film Festival, played Division I soccer at the university for three years, during which time Cooper claims coach Nancy Feldman made inappropriate comments about her body and sex life, engaged in controlling behavior and touched her thigh. 'Nancy Feldman was someone I trusted. Someone I believed in. Someone who was supposed to help me grow. Someone who was supposed to protect me,' Cooper wrote Thursday on Instagram. 'But instead she made my life a living hell and abused her power over me.' In the same post, Cooper said she reported the abuse to athletic director Drew Marrochello, who she said ignored her complaints. The university addressed the allegations in a statement obtained Thursday by People and other news outlets. 'Boston University has a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment. We have a robust system of resources, support and staff dedicated to student wellbeing and a thorough reporting process through our Equal Opportunity Office,' the statement reads. 'We encourage members of our community to report any concerns, and we remain committed to fostering a safe and secure campus environment for all.' While Cooper's documentary began as a way to show behind-the-scenes footage of her 2023 Unwell Tour, a visit to Boston University — specifically the soccer field — brought her emotions back to the surface, she said in Tuesday's brief episode of 'Call Her Daddy' titled 'My College Soccer Trauma.' 'The minute I stepped on that field, I felt so small,' Cooper said. 'I felt like I was 18 years old again, completely powerless, with no voice.' Cooper said 'everything changed' when she discovered that other women had alleged similar experiences with Feldman. She decided that she needed to speak out after talking to one of the women. 'If a woman in my position, who has power and a platform, is still fearful, is still scared of speaking out about my own lived experience of sexual harassment, how the hell will any other woman feel safe and confident to come forward?' Cooper asked in the episode. Since 'Call Her Alex' premiered, TikTok user @sizzlinghotsarah shared her own experience with Feldman, alleging that the soccer coach harassed her for her sexuality. Cooper responded to the post, 'I'm sick I'm so sorry she did this to you. Reaching out to u privately.' Feldman retired in 2022, but Cooper claims the harassment continues under her successor. 'Call Her Alex' also traces her journey to becoming one of the top podcasters in the world. Featured in the documentary are Cooper's former co-host Sofia Franklyn, husband Matt Kaplan, lifelong friend Lauren McMullen, who is an executive producer on the podcast, and Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports — the previous home of 'Call Her Daddy.' Cooper has become known for her revelatory interviews with everyone from Hailey Bieber and Paris Hilton to Monica Lewinsky and Jane Goodall. Last year, Cooper sat down with then-Vice President and presidential hopeful Kamala Harris — chronicled in the documentary. Cooper created her own podcast network, Unwell, in 2023 and has hired emerging talent including Madeline Argy, Owen Thiele and Alix Earle, who abruptly left in February. In August 2024, Cooper signed a $125-million deal with SiriusXM.

Oprah Says Barbara Walters' Struggles With Motherhood Made Her Never Want Kids

Oprah Winfrey is opening up about the many ways her 'mentor' Barbara Walters impacted her life, both personally and professionally. In the documentary 'Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything,' due out later this month on Hulu, Winfrey recalls witnessing Walters' 'charged, complex relationship' with her daughter, Jacqueline Guber. 'It's one of the reasons why I never had children,' Winfrey, who has been in a relationship with partner Stedman Graham since 1986, explains in the film. 'I remember her telling me once that 'there's nothing more fulfilling than having children, and you should really think about it.' And I was like, 'OK, but I'm looking at you. So, no.'' Walters, who died in 2022 at age 93, adopted her daughter with then-husband Lee Guber after several miscarriages. But as 'Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything' shows, Walters had a difficult time balancing parenting with her high-profile career in television. Growing up, Jacqueline Guber often butted heads with Walters, and experienced drug and alcohol addiction. As a teenager and young adult, her relationship with her famous mother often was strained. In an interview with People published this week, former NBC correspondent Cynthia McFadden recalls Walters being 'very regretful about her family life.' 'She couldn't understand someone like Jackie, who wasn't racing to the top. They were just so dispositionally and physically unlike each other,' McFadden explained. 'It was a struggle. That's not to say they didn't love each other, but it wasn't what she'd hoped for, and probably not what Jackie had hoped for either.' In the documentary, Walters acknowledges that 'people are more accepting' of working parents these days compared to when she was raising a young child. 'You can bring your kid to the office. In those days, if I had brought Jackie into the studio, it would be as if I had bought a dog who was not housebroken,' she said. Though Jacqueline Guber mostly avoids the spotlight, she operated New Horizons for Young Women, a Maine-based therapy program for at-risk female teens, from 2001 to 2008. In 2008, she told Glamour she and Walters 'have come to appreciate each other's quirks.' 'If my mom wasn't my mom, I would still want to be her friend. That says a lot,' she said. 'We believe 100% in each other, and I think that that's what love is all about.' Directed by Jackie Jesko, 'Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything' premiered Thursday at New York's Tribeca Film Festival. Early reviews of the film have been positive. 'It's a documentary a lot like its subject,' Variety wrote, 'sharp and inquiring in a playful way, and enthralled by fame, money, and power.'
