AWS to provide US government agencies with discounts
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has agreed to provide US Federal government agencies with up to $1 billion in discounts for cloud services, modernisation support and training. This agreement is valid until the end of 2028. The agreement with the US General Services Administration (GSA) is intended to accelerate IT transformation across federal agencies and spur AI innovation. AWS' deal with the government's centralised procurement division is pitched as aiding the agencies to migrate from legacy infrastructure to cloud environments. 'The agreement between GSA and AWS aims to reduce the cost of federal IT expenditures, save taxpayer dollars, drive innovation and agility in new government services, and secure America's continued leadership in AI,' the GSA stated. AWS is offering credits for infrastructure, applications and training to improve agency capabilities. 'Through this unique partnership, the federal government is poised to deliver on President Trump's AI Action Plan and solidify its position as the global AI leader,' federal acquisition service commissioner Josh Gruenbaum said. Financial terms of the contract were not available. The GSA also struck AI-related arrangements with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google earlier this week. Source: Mobile World Live Image Credit: AWS

OpenAI reveals plan to increase adoption of its AI chatbot
OpenAI has partnered with the US General Services Administration (GSA) to offer its ChatGPT model to the US federal workforce for the nominal fee of $1 a year. This initiative is part of the AI developer's plan to increase adoption of its chatbot. Earlier this week, GSA, which is the government's centralised procurement division, announced it added Anthropic, Google and OpenAI to its list of approved AI companies for use across civilian federal agencies. OpenAI stated it will provide wide access to the enterprise version of ChatGPT by charging $1 for the next year, including an additional 60-day period for unlimited use of advanced features. The company set up a dedicated government user community to help federal employees feel confident about using AI. Custom training platforms and guided learning are also available to help them explore and use the technology. 'This effort delivers on a core pillar of the Trump Administration's AI Action Plan by making powerful AI tools available across the federal government so that workers can spend less time on red tape and paperwork, and more time doing what they came to public service to do: serve the American people,' OpenAI stated. It noted ChatGPT Enterprise does not use business data, including inputs or outputs, to train or improve models and it stated the same safeguards will apply to federal use. Additionally, GSA has officially issued an Authority to Use (ATU) for ChatGPT Enterprise, 'demonstrating our commitment to rigorous security and compliance standards'. Since 2024, more than 90,000 users across more than 3,500 US federal, state, and local government agencies have sent over 18 million messages on ChatGPT to support their day-to-day work, according to OpenAI's website. ACWA Power Signs Senegal Desalination Project Deal
Home » Africa » ACWA Power Signs Senegal Desalination Project Deal ACWA Power, the world's largest private water desalination company and a key player in the energy transition, announced the signing of project agreements with the Government of Senegal for the Grande-Côte seawater desalination project. The infrastructure project, powered entirely by renewable energy, is expected to deliver up to 400,000 m³ of potable water per day. It aims to secure water access for Dakar and surrounding regions, marking a major step toward improving water security in West Africa. The signing ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Dakar. It formalized both the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contract and the Government Support Agreement (GSA). The event was attended by: His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Fay, President of Senegal Key ministers from water, finance, economy, and cooperation portfolios Representatives from SONES and ACWA Power A high-level Saudi delegation also participated, including officials from the Saudi Embassy, Investment Promotion Authority, MISA, and Saudi Water Authority. With an investment of approximately USD 800 million, the Grande-Côte Project is set to become the largest desalination initiative in West Africa. It will be delivered in two phases, each producing 200,000 m³/day of desalinated water. Financial close is expected by 2026, with commercial operations beginning in 2031. The project will operate under a long-term partnership with SONES and will rely fully on green electricity sourced via a supply agreement with SENELEC, Senegal's state-owned utility company. This positions the Grande-Côte Project among the few large-scale desalination plants globally to run entirely on renewable energy. It also supports Senegal's sustainability and climate goals. Raad Al Saady, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of ACWA Power, stated that the agreements underscore the company's commitment to sustainable development and global water solutions. He added that the project will serve as a benchmark for environmentally responsible desalination and will help ensure a sustainable water future for Dakar and nearby communities. The agreement further highlights Senegal's efforts to leverage public-private partnerships for essential infrastructure, while reinforcing ACWA Power's commitment to advancing sustainable development across Africa.
