
Terengganu govt calls for prayers, mobilises immediate welfare aid, counselling for families affected by UPSI bus tragedy
KUALA TERENGGANU, June 9 — The Terengganu government will provide immediate assistance to the families of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students involved in the tragic crash between a bus and a multipurpose vehicle on the East–West Highway near Tasik Banding, Perak, early this morning.
State Education, Higher Education, Science, Technology and Human Capital Development Committee chairman Datuk Satiful Bahri Mamat said the aid would include welfare support, as well as counselling and psychosocial services for the families and friends of the victims.
'I have instructed all relevant departments and agencies to coordinate efforts with the university, hospitals and the Federal government to ensure that all victims and their families receive the necessary support,' he said in a statement today.
Satiful Bahri also extended his condolences on behalf of the state government to the families affected by the tragedy, which has claimed the lives of 15 students, many of them from Terengganu, who were on their way back to campus after the Hari Raya Aidiladha holidays.
'They passed away on a noble journey, returning in pursuit of knowledge with sincere intentions. Their loss is deeply felt by their families, the community and the state.
'We call on the people of Terengganu and Malaysians at large to join us in praying that the souls of those who perished will be showered with mercy and placed among the martyrs and the righteous,' he said.
He also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured and strength for the families affected by the tragedy.
Earlier this morning, the Hulu Perak Civil Defence Force confirmed in a statement that at least 15 people were killed when a bus carrying UPSI students collided with another vehicle on the East–West Highway in Banun, near Tasik Banding, approximately 57 kilometres from Gerik, Perak.
It is understood that the bus was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. — Bernama

IPOH, June 9 — The Higher Education Ministry (KPT) will provide an initial aid of RM2,000 and disaster relief of RM1,000 to the families of victims involved in the tragic bus accident that claimed 15 lives at KM53, East-West Highway (JRTB) near Gerik early this morning. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the initial aid is to ease the burden of the families, including funeral arrangements for the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who died in the incident. 'UPSI has announced immediate assistance, including RM2,000 from KPT for each victim's family to manage funeral arrangements, while UPSI will provide RM1,000,' he said. 'Additional support, including funeral assistance, insurance coverage, zakat aid, accident relief and accommodation for families, has also been arranged,' he told a media conference at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here today. Also present were Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff. Zambry said UPSI will coordinate all assistance efforts. He said KPT, the Education Ministry (MoE) and the Health Ministry (MoH) were also in communication to ensure swift action could be taken to assist the victims and their families. 'At this stage, all basic needs, particularly related to the management of the remains, have been arranged, including the provision of hearses to transport the bodies to their respective destinations. 'Other forms of assistance include ensuring that affected family members in this area (HRPB) and Gerik Hospital are taken care of, including providing them with the necessary support,' he said. He also informed that 13 bodies had arrived at HRPB's forensic department for post-mortems, while the remaining two were at Gerik Hospital. Meanwhile, Zambry said he had contacted Transport Minister Anthony Loke regarding the possibility of launching an investigation into the incident, and also advised the public not to speculate. — Bernama

Final journey home: Community groups unite in 19-hearse convoy for UPSI crash victims
JERTIH, June 9 — Nineteen hearses were dispatched to Perak to transport the remains of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who were killed in a tragic road accident along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early this morning. Pertubuhan Amal Komuniti Besut (Amal Besut), chairman Mohd Azizul Azli Mohd Sani, said six of the hearses were provided by the community charity organisation and one by Amal Setiu. 'The rest came from mosques in Besut, the Kuala Besut state assembly coordinator's office and several non-governmental organisations in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan,' he said when met at Masjid Hadhari today. Mohd Azizul Azli said 46 volunteers were involved in the convoy, including 16 individuals trained in Islamic funeral rites to assist with preparations before the remains were brought home. He added that Amal Besut also brought along complete funeral management supplies, including burial shrouds. 'All funeral and transport services for the victims are provided free of charge by Amal Besut,' he said. Meanwhile, Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad said the district police headquarters had been assigned to escort the hearse convoy to and from Perak to ensure a smooth journey. — Bernama

Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the bus was carrying 42 Upsi students, eight men and 32 women, aged between 21 and 23, all from the east coast. Advertisement He said the bus, which was registered in Kedah, had been privately chartered by the students and the group departed from Jertih, Terengganu at 9 pm on Sunday and was en route to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when the crash occurred at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Banun, Gerik, early this morning. 'This tragic accident has resulted in 15 fatalities. All the bodies are currently awaiting post-mortem. Thirteen of the deceased have been sent to Raja Perempuan Bainun Hospital, while two others were taken to Gerik Hospital. 'Twenty-seven others - 23 women and four men - suffered injuries. The bus driver, aged 40, and his 54-year-old co-driver were also hurt in the incident,' Noor Hisam told a press conference at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters today. Noor Hisam said that the driver and passengers of the MPV, namely a couple aged 37 and 36, as well as their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, were also injured and taken to Baling Hospital, Kedah, for treatment.
