Migrant exodus sparks political storm in Gurugram
The drive, aimed at identifying undocumented immigrants, has reportedly led to 300–400 families leaving shanty settlements, particularly around South City 2, amid fears of detention and harassment. 'Even those with Aadhaar and voter cards are being detained. Police arrive without warning and take people away. Some were even beaten,' a migrant resident claimed, requesting not to be named.
'We didn't come here to break the law—we came to work hard and feed our families,' said Imran Ali, a 32-year-old construction worker from Murshidabad, who left Gurugram last week and is now staying with a cousin in Delhi's Seelampur. 'Police came to our settlement late at night. Even though I showed my Aadhaar card, they said it needed to be verified in Bengal. My wife got scared, packed our things, and we left that same night. I lost my job, and we are now surviving on whatever little savings I had. I don't know when we will go back—or if we even can.'
Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed, a senior Meo community leader, alleged the drive is 'unfairly singling out Muslim residents' and 'damaging Gurugram's secular fabric and global image.' He said even individuals with valid documents have been detained and forced to leave. 'This campaign… has turned into a tool for communal victimisation,' Ahmed said, adding he has raised the issue with the state DGP and Gurugram Commissioner of Police, who assured him 'no legitimate Indian citizen will be harassed.'
Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini defended the campaign, declaring, 'There is no place for Bangladeshi infiltrators in Haryana; they are being removed as swiftly as possible.' He added, 'No compromise against India's unity, sovereignty, and Constitution is acceptable... the nation's interest will always be paramount.'
In response, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee slammed the drive, calling it 'linguistic terror' and alleging that Bengali-speaking workers are being deported without proper checks. 'I have been increasingly receiving reports of detentions and atrocities… West Bengal Police is receiving requests from Haryana Police for identity verification,' she said, citing Human Rights Watch (HRW) reports accusing BJP-ruled states of systematic deportations.

This must stop at once!!' the CM posted.Banerjee has been attacking the BJP-led Centre, saying that the detention of hundreds of Bengali speaking migrant workers across BJP-governed states was 'a language war and linguistic terrorism' waged on Bengal and its people.
TMC MP Samirul Islam backed Banerjee, accusing BJP-led states of 'hiding data on Bengali-speaking migrants' and turning 'national security into a tool of discrimination.'
'No illegal immigrant will be allowed to stay in Haryana. The verification drive is being conducted strictly within the legal framework to ensure the safety and security of all citizens,' said Arvind Saini, media in-charge of BJP Haryana. 'The Congress is raising baseless concerns because their traditional vote bank is being affected. This is not about religion or language—it's about national interest and lawful residency.'
Senior Congress leader Pankaj Dawar said many of these families have been in Gurugram for over two decades as domestic workers and labourers. 'They consider Gurugram their home. But now, their lives have been thrown into chaos,' he said.
Haryana Police, however, denied any communal angle. 'The process is based on intelligence inputs and legal procedure,' said Gurugram police spokesperson Sandeep Kumar. 'We are ensuring that no Indian citizen is harassed.'
As the controversy deepens, the verification campaign has become a flashpoint in the larger political discourse around migration, minority rights, and state power, according to opposing political leaders. 'The situation is not just a local law enforcement issue anymore,' Ahmed said. 'It's a test of how inclusive and just we remain as a society.'

Mamata slams Shah for SIR: ‘Show your parents' birth certificates first
In a scathing attack on the BJP and Union Home Minister over the detention and deportation of Bengali migrants and the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday challenged Amit Shah to produce the birth certificates of his parents. Addressing a Bhasha Andolan rally in tribal-dominated Jhargram, the TMC supremo alleged that SIR, which was recently conducted by the Election Commission in poll-bound Bihar, was a backdoor way of implementing the NRC (National Register of Citizens) in the country 'to systematically disenfranchise minorities, tribals, and opposition supporters'. 'They (ECI) are asking for the birth certificates of people's parents. Where will they get those from? I want to ask today. Do BJP leaders themselves have their parents' birth certificates? Mr Amit Shah, arrest me if I am wrong. Do you have your parents' birth certificates? Show that first. Then talk about removing people's names from the voters' list. When BJP leaders come here, we will hit the streets and protest,' she said. 'Previously, children were born at home. Where will the certificate come from? Now everything is based on 2002. Those who are demanding this, do they have their birth certificates,' she asked. Calling the citizenship notices issued to two West Bengal residents by the BJP government in Assam, 'unconstitutional and illegal', the chief minister said: 'Notices are being served to members of the Tapashili and Rajbanshi communities from Assam… We strongly condemn this. This is a veiled attempt to implement NRC. Shame on the BJP.' 'People are committing suicide out of fear of the NRC. Who will take responsibility for this? He is expected to attend the U.S. Central Command's change-of-command ceremony. But the real story may not be the ceremony itself. It is the timing and the conversations already in motion. In June, Munir had lunch with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. The meeting lasted two hours. No civilian leader from Pakistan was present. It was a first. Never before had a Pakistani military chief been hosted in the Oval Office on his own. According to insiders, their discussion touched on trade, economic ties and the future of cryptocurrency. In his signature style, Trump did not hold back praise. He said, 'The reason I had him here was I wanted to thank him for not going into the war and ending it…' The remark referred to the May conflict between India and Pakistan, four days of cross-border drone and missile exchanges that stopped just short of full-scale war. India later said it acted alone. But Trump claimed credit for helping stop it. Munir seemed to agree. In his own words, he said Trump deserved a Nobel Prize for 'averting nuclear war' between the two nations. The backdrop to that crisis was Operation Sindoor. India launched the operation in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians. According to Indian officials, nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were targeted and more than 100 militants were killed in the offensive. Trump's role in managing tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad has stirred debate. India has insisted that the eventual ceasefire came after direct talks between the two countries' Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMO). No foreign mediation, New Delhi said, was involved. Still, Trump has not stepped back from the narrative. In fact, he has doubled down. Alongside security talks, he also unveiled a trade agreement with Islamabad. The deal opens access for U.S. companies to Pakistan's oil reserves. But the fine print carries a twist. Trump signed an executive order imposing a 19% tariff on Pakistani exports, lower than the previous 29% rate, but still steep. The trade talks have been branded as a package of both relief and pressure. Munir's return to Washington now comes in that context. A second visit in two months signals something crucial: sustained military diplomacy, with political overtones. Whether the visit brings new deals, more pressure or another round of handshakes remains to be seen. But for now, Pakistan's most powerful man is going back to the United States, and the conversations are far from over.
