Fired-up Alas Pilipinas Men off to Bahrain for AVC Nations Cup

GMA Network10 hours ago

It's the turn of Alas Pilipinas Men to ply their trade against several powerhouse teams in the continent as they see action in the 2025 AVC Men's Volleyball Nations Cup starting on June 17 in Manama, Bahrain.
The Filipinos are hoping to build on their three-game sweep in the Alas Pilipinas Invitationals the country hosted last week, where the Philippines reigned over guest teams from Indonesia, South Korea, and Thailand.
Former collegiate MVPs Louie Ramirez and Marck Espejo took turns leading the squad to a 3-0 romp.
Ramirez, a two-time NCAA MVP out of Perpetual, starred in their 25-23, 27-29, 25-21, 25-22 win against Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi before former Ateneo star Espejo handled it from there, leading the charge against Korean V. League champion Hyundai Capital Skywalkers and Thailand national team.
They now shift into higher gear in the Nations Cup, where they will slug it out against two higher-ranked squads in the preliminary round.
Alas will open its campaign against a formidable foe in Pakistan at 7 p.m. on Tuesday with the latter hoping to improve from its runner-up finish last year. Pakistan previously fell to world no. 24 Qatar in the 2024 edition, absorbing a 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 sweep loss in the finals.
Alas will then take on world no. 45 Chinese Taipei on June 18 at 7 p.m. to close out the eliminations.
The top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals while the rest will be relegated to the classification phase. The tournament winner will gain the lone ticket to the 2026 Asian Championship.

Jia De Guzman reflects on silver medal finish of Alas Pilipinas

A day after Alas Pilipinas bagged a silver medal in the AVC Nations Cup, team captain Jia De Guzman shared her reflection on the team's journey and the meaning of the said feat. The Philippines fell to host country Vietnam in straight sets in the finals on Saturday. "It takes time and loads of patience to build a culture that focuses more on the journey & growth over immediate results. Where other people only see wins or losses, achievements or failures, perfection or see ALL of it as necessary parts of the process of becoming a better team," she wrote in the caption of her post. "This is what 'gaining experience as a team' means. This is why we try to keep the same players, and also add more to the pool." De Guzman said the the process of building a culture should be respected as results will follow eventually. "When we make the mistake of putting all the weight on a 'game win' or 'historic feat' to count a day or tournament as successful, it's easy to be blind to the progress, small wins, and experience that was actually achieved," she wrote. "But when we truly live in the moment and give full respect to the process, we learn the most and the results will eventually follow." The Alas team captain shared her pride in seeing how the team grows and shared their victory to all their supporters. "Patuloy na lalaban ang Alas Pilipinas para sa bayan." De Guzman was also named as the Best Setter of the tournament, while her teammates Angel Canino and Dell Palomata were named as part of the Best Outside Hitters and Best Middle Blockers. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Brian Esquibel still proud of 'overachiever' Letran Knights despite finals heartbreak

NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Colegio de San Juan de Letran's defeat in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball finals did not dampen head coach Brian Esquibel's pride in the Knights. The long-time tactician stressed that the team had exceeded expectations and vowed the only way forward is up as they set their sights on a redemption campaign come Season 101. And for the Knights, the work starts now. "Actually I'm very happy sa narating ng team kasi coming from top four tapos umabot ng finals, it's a big achievement na para sa amin kasi sabi ko nga sa kanila, baka hindi pa ito 'yung time kasi mga bata pa sila," Esquibel told GMA News Online last Wednesday. "Mahaba pang panahon 'yung mapagsasamahan ng team, sana maging lessons 'yung mga nangyari kasi kailangang mag-mature. And after ng game na 'to, magtatrabaho agad kami para sa next season." The Knights made some noise this season, leaning on veterans Vince Himzon and Bembem Bautista as well as young guns Dave Lardizabal, Christer Ambrocio, and Wayne Araño to end the elimination round at fourth spot with a 12-6 record. But in order to move forward, the Knights had to get past a huge roadblock that was De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in the Final Four with the top-seeded Blazers holding a twice-to-beat bonus. Bautista went beastmode in the semifinals, unleashing 17 points in Game 1 that saw them sweeping the Blazers with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-23 win before detonating for a 27-point explosion in the do-or-die Game 2 to steer the Knights to a 22-25, 28-26, 25-14, 25-20 victory and into the finals. That win alone was already a historic one for Letran as it sent them to the championship round for the first time in 16 years. But the Knights faded in the finals against eventual champion Arellano University to cap off their stellar campaign. "Ngayon, meron na kaming championship experience na dadalhin para sa susunod na season. Ang sabi ko sa kanila walang hihinto hangga't walang ginto," Esquibel added. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
