Private Scottish island with ruined castle goes on sale for $7.5 million

CNN24-06-2025
An entire Scottish island complete with a ruined castle is up for sale for the princely sum of £5.5 million ($7.48 million).
Shuna Island, which sits just off the west coast of Scotland, is being sold for the first time in 80 years, according to listings from estate agents Knight Frank and Sotheby's International Realty.
Tom Stewart-Moore, a partner at the Knight Frank office in Edinburgh, told CNN that a number of Scottish islands are sold each year, but Shuna stands out for its size at 1,100 acres.
'This certainly stands above the rest,' he said on Tuesday. 'It feels like something of scale.'
And while Scotland has a plethora of small private islands that could serve as boltholes for the ultra-wealthy, most are very hard to get to.
Not so for Shuna Island, according to Stewart-Moore, who highlighted the island's relative accessibility: it is just a 30-minute helicopter flight from Glasgow Airport.
'It is very accessible, that is actually very key,' said Stewart-Moore.
The island is currently home to eight residential properties, seven of which are used as holiday lets, as well as the ruins of a castle built in the early 20th century by former owner George Buckley, a soldier and adventurer from New Zealand.
The castle is 'in an unbelievable position,' said Stewart-Moore.
'The views really are breathtaking,' he said, adding that the ruins could be redeveloped by the new owners into a new principal residence, dependent on planning permission.
The island is home to a mixture of native woodland, rough grazing and parkland, he added, as well as boasting both rocky shorelines and sandy beaches.
It is also home to various hills that offer 'amazing aspects looking in all directions,' he said.
As for potential buyers, Stewart-Moore identified two main groups: those who see the island as a 'trophy asset' where they can spend time in complete privacy, and those who would look to develop its potential for holiday lets, ecotourism or sporting retreats.
'The opportunities are relatively wide on this one,' he said.
Shuna Island has been on the market for less than two weeks and has already drawn significant interest from potential buyers from around the world, said Stewart-Moore.

SBP reports growth driven by new clients and team investments

Scottish company SBP Accountants & Business Advisers (SBP) has described 2025 as a notable year for the company thanks to an increase in clients, investments in talent and the expansion of its regional offices. The company, which operates in the Aberdeen, Peterhead, Fraserburgh and Banff areas in Scotland, anticipates a 20% increase in its client base by the end of the year. SBP noted in a press statement that its choice to remain independently owned is proving to be a 'key differentiator'. A key development this year was the relocation of SBP's Fraserburgh office to larger premises. The move improved accessibility and enhanced its regional presence, attracting skilled professionals and notable clients, the company added. In response to increasing demand, the practice has expanded its workforce by 11% over the past six months, which has supported growth in various service areas including audit, tax planning, research and development claims, and consultancy. Recent company initiatives include the introduction of a salary sacrifice pension scheme, enhanced professional development opportunities and 'flexible' working arrangements. SBP added that it continues to prioritise innovation, with its in-house technology group working to improve both internal processes and client services, particularly in the area of cloud-based accounting. The company noted that there is growing demand for advisory services in lending support, tax planning and software integration as small and medium-sized enterprises look for adaptable, technology-driven partners. The company also revealed that it is actively exploring new locations for expansion. SBP managing partner John Hannah said: 'Our success is rooted in relationships with our clients, our staff and our communities. 'While the accountancy sector undergoes significant change, we remain focused on what matters most – delivering tailored, high-quality advice, investing in our team and maintaining our independence. 'That commitment continues to drive our growth and position us strongly for the future.' The new station was delivered by Network Rail and contractor AmcoGiffen and is the latest milestone in the overall enhancement project. Several upgrades have already been completed along the route, including the opening of a new £16million station at Hairmyres in May, new footbridges at Busby, Clarkston, and Giffnock stations, the renewal of the railway bridge in Busby, and the installation of a new road bridge on Thornliebank Road. Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Fiona Hyslop, said: 'The opening of this new station in East Kilbride is the latest milestone in the delivery of the significant investment this Scottish Government has made across the route. 'The new station is fitting for a line that is benefiting from modernisation, bringing with that greener and more sustainable electric trains on completion of this £144million programme. "It is a clear example of our commitment to making rail a more attractive travel option.' Liam Sumpter, managing director of Network Rail Scotland, said: 'We know how important East Kilbride station is for people travelling to work, accessing education, and reaching vital services. "That's why we wanted to create a space that feels modern, welcoming, and built around the needs of the community. "Everyone involved in the project has delivered on that vision, and the result is a station that's truly fit for the future. 'The East Kilbride enhancement project is one of the most significant rail upgrades we've delivered in recent years. "Each milestone, such as this one, brings us closer to a railway that better serves our passengers. "We're reaching the final stages now as we work to complete the electrification of the line and welcome electric trains onto the route towards the end of the year.' Joanne Maguire, ScotRail Managing Director, added: 'The opening of the new East Kilbride station is a huge step forward in delivering a more modern and sustainable railway for our customers. 'These improvements will not only enhance the experience for people travelling today but also support the future introduction of electric trains along the route. 'We're proud to play our part in this transformation and look forward to welcoming even more people on board in the months ahead.'

Port Ellen's Oldest Scotch Whisky Could Fetch $400,000 At Auction

The Port Ellen Prism decanter, designed by artist Wilfried Grootens, captures swirling layers of smoke in glass to reflect the whisky's depth and character. Diageo We are still waiting patiently for the new whisky from the Port Ellen Distillery, but until then they are keeping us enthralled with some exceptional releases from the depths of the Port Ellen warehouses. The latest edition is the Port Ellen Prism, estimated at $190,000 to $400,000 (£150,000 to £300,000), and is the oldest whisky released by the distillery. It has been created especially for the Distiller's One of One Auction with Sotheby's. Proceeds from the auction will go to the charity Youth Action Fund, which supports disadvantaged young people in Scotland. Port Ellen Prism is a 46 year old whisky that was distilled in 1978 and just one 1.5litre decanter has been created. This exceptional whisky will be part of the third Distiller's One of One auction, which is known for presenting some incredible whiskies, all of which are limited editions of just one. For this release Port Ellen has worked with award-winning artist Wilfried Grootens. 'With delicate brush strokes I paint or draw on single panes that, layered, trimmed and polished, seemingly float in the glass creating three dimensional shapes, visualising the smoke within and exploring its depth of flavour,' Grootens explained in the official press release. The effect is a striking visual representation of smoke that, like its inspiration, shifts as you observe it. The press release explains that the intention was to create a 'visual representation of the multi-layered depth of character.' Prism follows Port Ellen Gemini, another exceptionally designed, premium release from the reborn distillery. With Prism I feel that Diageo's intentions with Port Ellen are becoming more clearly defined. We haven't seen any regular releases from Port Ellen since the annual releases were discontinued but what we have seen have been uniformly high-end, premium releases with impeccable design and story-telling. From the Atlas of Smoke to the limited distillery tours/experiences, everything around the new Port Ellen feels pitched toward the luxury consumer. According to the official press release we have another Port Ellen release to look forward to later this year, and I am honestly excited to see it. Bidding for the Distiller's One of One auction opens September 15th online, but the main event will be the live auction at Hopetoun House, near Edinburgh on Friday October 10th. As well as the Port Ellen Prism collectors of rare whisky will be able to bid on an exceptional selection of one off whiskies from the likes of Laphroaig to Old Pulteney.
