Florida International University (FIU) is transforming the field of engineering and computing, cementing its position as a national trailblazer in innovation and academic excellence. One of the most exciting developments at FIU is the opening of the first building of the 'Engineering Innovation Complex' in Fall 2025. This 121,000-square-foot, $75 million state-of-the-art facility will house cutting-edge makerspace labs, active learning classrooms, and advanced research laboratories. Structured to excel in sustainable design and operation, the LEED Certified Gold building will feature 20,000 square feet of interactive research and teaching space equipped with best-in-class computing and prototyping equipment.

Environment & Environmental Resilience: With a strategic focus on sustainability and innovation, FIU leverages its unique location to conduct cutting-edge research in areas such as Everglades restoration, Biscayne Bay recovery, and coral reef and shark protection. The college is also at the forefront of infrastructure resiliency research in sprayable ultra high-performance cement, 3-D printing and resilient structures. The Wall of Wind (WoW), a national experimental facility capable of generating Category 5 hurricane-force winds, has led to improved building codes and safer structures nationwide.
Tech and Innovation: FIU is committed to ensuring our graduates are AI-ready. In addition to a comprehensive curriculum transformation, the college recently started a new master's program in applied AI and IoT. Remote-controlled robot rabbits are being deployed to help tackle Florida's invasive python problem. The Burmese python threatens the ecosystem of the Everglades by preying on wildlife, including wading birds, mammals and other reptiles. The creatures are notoriously difficult to catch but the innovative solar-powered robots are designed to mimic marsh rabbits to lure the pythons out of hiding so they can be removed by agents in the Everglades. Scientists from the South Florida Water Management District and the University of Florida have teamed up to use the robotic rabbit decoys as part of their Python Elimination Program. Researchers removed the stuffing from the 40 toy rabbits and replaced it with electrical components which are waterproofed to ensure they can endure the rain and humidity. They were designed to produce a heat signature and emit a smell to attract pythons. The rabbits are also equipped with cameras that monitor for pythons and notify officials when a snake is detected. Once notified a snake wrangler can be dispatched to the area and the python will be euthanized. 'Our partners have allowed us to trial these things that may sound a little crazy,' Robert McCleery, a University of Florida professor of wildlife ecology and conservation, told the Palm Beach Post. 'Working in the Everglades for 10 years, you get tired of documenting the problem. You want to address it.' Every year the state hosts the Florida Python Challenge, encouraging participants to hunt and humanely kill the snakes for a chance to win up to $10,000 in prizes. Burmese pythons were first spotted in the Everglades in the 1970s and their introduction is a result of the pet trade, when they were intentionally or accidentally released, the South Florida Water Management District said. 'Every python that is removed and eliminated is making a difference to protect the Everglades and South Florida's diverse and native wildlife,' the district said. 'Invasive pythons are one of the most destructive and harmful species in America's Everglades. Their aggressive predation on native wildlife robs panthers, raptors, bobcats, and other native predators of their primary food sources.'

A team dedicated to controlling populations of invasive Burmese pythons in South Florida has deployed another unique method to find the elusive predators: robotic rabbits. The robots are remote-controlled, solar-powered and designed to look like marsh rabbits, a preferred choice of prey for the pythons, according to the South Florida Water Management District, which is funding the project as part of its Python Elimination Program. Researchers designed the devices to produce a heat signature and emit a smell designed to attract the pythons, according to the utility company. They are also equipped with cameras to monitor for the pythons' movements and alert officials when one is detected -- who can then send out a snake wrangler to detect and euthanize the animals. "We want to capture all of the processes that an actual rabbit would give off," said Robert McCleery, a wildlife ecologist at the University of Florida, told the Palm Beach Post. Scientists at the University of Florida conducted the research, which was partly funded by the FWC. The South Florida Water Management District is funding the experiment. This isn't the first time snake hunters have used creative means to capture their prey. In 2020, the FWC deployed python-sniffing detector dogs to track pythons in South Florida. In 2022, University of Florida researchers put live rabbits in cages in the Everglades to lure the snakes. Over 90 days, nine rabbit pens lured 22 pythons, leading the snakes to stay in the area for more than an hour on average, according to a state report. Trackers have been placed on dozens of preferred python prey, such as rabbits, raccoons and opossums, which lead snake hunters to the pythons after they've swallowed the prey. Officials around the state pay bounty hunters to help control Burmese python populations and have attached tracking devices to male snakes, which leads them to egg-laying females. MORE: Invasive ocean species detected in Florida waters, scientists say The introduction of Burmese pythons has decimated the local ecosystem in South Florida as they breed rapidly and compete with native wildlife for food, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. An estimated 180,000 were brought into the country between 1975 and 2018, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Many entered the ecosystem through accidental or intentional release. As of 2000, the species had established a self-sustaining breeding population in the South Florida ecosystem, according to the USGS. The species is now distributed across more than 1,000 square miles of South Florida, including all of the Everglades National Park and across the southern coast to Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, according to the USGS. But Burmese pythons are notoriously difficult to detect and capture, experts say. Detectability of Burmese pythons is an estimated 1% to 3%, meaning out of 100 snakes in a survey area, there could be a chance of spotting between one and three individuals, research has shown. At Everglades National Park, the frequency of Burmese python detection is about one python per eight hours of searching, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The U.S. banned the import of Burmese pythons in 2012. But chances of eradication are likely low at this point, according to the USGS. MORE: Python-sniffing dogs are Florida's newest weapon in fighting invasive snakes At least 76 prey species have been found in the guts of Burmese pythons over the past several decades, including mammals, birds, iguanas and alligators, according to USGS scientists. A 2012 study found that raccoon populations in the state had declined 99.3% since 1997, while opossums saw a decline of 98.9% and bobcats an 87.5% decline. Marsh rabbits, cottontail rabbits and foxes have effectively disappeared, a 2015 study found. In December 2022, a group of biologists stumbled upon a nearly 15-foot Burmese python in the midst of devouring an adult white-tailed deer. Black rats seem to be the only species of mammal resistant to the pythons. Also an invasive species, they arrived centuries ago aboard ships from Europe. They reproduce quickly and can scavenge carcasses as well as eat plants, insects and scraps from humans -- allowing them to thrive, according to the USGS. But native predators may be starting to fight back, according to researchers who have documented cases of alligators, cottonmouth snakes and bobcats killing Burmese pythons.

Reptiles and Florida might as well be synonymous, especially when it comes to our slithering neighbors. According to the WorldAtlas, Florida has 46 native species of snakes, as well as four invasive species — and don't forget the six categories of venomous snakes in the state. "The state of Florida is a hotbed for snake activity. Lush ecosystems spread across a mix of tropical and subtropical climates are tailor-made for these cold-blooded slitherers," the geography website states, adding that snakes are a vital part of our ecosystem. We have more in common with these scaly serpents than we realize. Snakes and humans both love to seek out bodies of water to cool down in the sweltering summers. However, before you go swimming in your local lake, which is already questionable due to our massive alligator population, make sure it isn't also known for its large number of snakes. The Lakes of the Everglades It wouldn't be a list of the most "snake-infested" lakes without the Everglades popping up. WorldAtlas highlighted the lakes of South Florida's national park mainly for their large, unwelcome inhabitant — the Burmese python. These invasive species have dominated the waters within the Everglades for decades. "Because of a combination of intentional releases by dissatisfied pet owners (pythons are popular exotic pets in this region) and 1992's Hurricane Andrew destroying a breeding facility (which released untold specimens into nearby swamps), the population of these snakes has grown at unmanageable rates," the report shares. "Given their overwhelming reproductive habits and the fact that they can grow to over 15 feet in length and weigh over 200 pounds, these stealthy constrictors constitute one of the worst-case examples of invasive species on the planet." Besides the Burmese python, here are some other species you'll find in the Everglades, with those highlighted being venomous: Coral Snake Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake Eastern Garter Snake Eastern Indigo Snake Florida Brown Snake Florida Cottonmouth Pygmy Rattlesnake Rat Snake Lake Okeechobee Moving a smidge north, we're highlighting the largest lake in the state, Lake Okeechobee. It is the tenth-largest freshwater lake in the country. When compared to freshwater lakes contained entirely within the U.S. boundary, it becomes the second-largest lake, surpassed only by Lake Michigan. This 730-square-mile, shallow body of water, situated in the South-Central part of the state, is famous for its largemouth bass and speckled perch, as well as bluegills, Okeechobee catfish, and black crappies. However, other less-popular creatures also lurk nearby. Central and Southern Florida have roughly 34 native species (four of which are venomous) and three invasive species of snakes. With that said, WorldAtlas says the most commonly sighted snakes are Florida green watersnakes, brown watersnakes, the Eastern kingsnake, Brahminy blind snakes, and the Florida king snake. Lake Seminole Northwest of state capital Tallahassee is Florida's Lake Seminole (not to be confused with Lake Seminole on the West coast of Central Florida) is a long and narrow reservoir. Forty-five out of the state's 46 known native species and all six of the venomous varieties are found in the region. WorldAtlas says three different rattlesnakes are reported around Lake Seminole: timber, diamondback, and pygmy. Cottonmouths (also known as the water moccasin) are also found around the lake, sometimes confused with non-venomous watersnakes. Lake Iamonia Leon County's Lake Iamonia is a seven-mile-long prairie lake that drains through a natural sinkhole during dry seasons and reforms when the rains return (despite an unsuccessful attempt at damming and regulating the levels between 1939 and 1980). WorldAtlas states that the lake is popular among photographers, paddlers, and nature lovers. Identified species include banded watersnakes, Florida green watersnakes, cottonmouths, Eastern kingsnakes, corn snakes, red-bellied snakes, Southern ribbon snakes, ringneck snakes, and scarlet snakes. Lake Talquin North Florida's Lake Talquin is our final stop. This former floodplain-turned-manmade reservoir west of Tallahassee is well-stocked with fish and birds, along with their slithering companions. Cottonmouths, red-bellied watersnakes, and brown watersnakes are the big three commonly found in this 15-square-mile lake and around its 40 miles of shoreline, according to WorldAtlas.
