Match scorecard
Tom Latham scored a debut century as Warwickshire reached 364-4 against Surrey on the opening day of their County Championship Division One match.
New Zealand batter Latham struck an unbeaten 139 from 244 balls after Surrey chose to bowl on another belter of a batting pitch at Edgbaston.
Rob Yates scored 86 against the champions' much-changed team with Ollie Pope, Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson having departed on England duty.
Surrey are also without Dan Worrall, who they decided to spare the hard labour on a pitch which appears so good for batting that the best chance of victory lies in a fourth day run-chase.
Warwickshire, meanwhile, are without young seamer Michael Booth who will be sidelined for two to three months by a stress fracture of the fibula.
Against a Surrey attack including debutant Nathan Smith, Warwickshire started serenely in the Second City sunshine as Yates and Alex Davies (45) gathered an untroubled 70 in 19 overs.
Davies twice hoisted Jordan Clark for six over the short Hollies Stand boundary but departed in angst after swinging and missing at a full toss from Dan Lawrence.
Yates and Latham added 112 before the former departed in a different type of angst to this captain. With a century beckoning, he tickled an unthreatening leg-side delivery from Tom Lawes to the wicketkeeper.
A Latham century looked likely from the moment he took guard. He moved sweetly into the 40s, took a breather and spent 35 balls there, then pulled Clark for six to reach his half-century and galloped from 50 to 80 in another 18 balls.
It was batting of simple, solid, unhurried class.
Surrey's rejigged bowling attack, with Smith, Lawes and Cameron Steel each playing their first game of the season, persevered nobly.
Sam Hain flicked Clark straight to backward square leg and Lawrence bowled Beau Webster with a beauty through the gate.
But Ed Barnard (38 not out) joined the implacable Latham to add an unbroken 83 in the last 24 overs of the day.
Latham reached his 27th first-class century from 161 balls to emulate his countryman Jeetan Patel in making a ton on his Warwickshire debut, immediately providing the top order ballast they badly need.
It was a gruelling day in the field for Surrey but they will expect similar plunder from their batters, including Jason Roy who will be looking to make it back-to-back Championship centuries spanning six years eight months, having scored 128 against Essex at The Oval in his last Championship game, in September 2018.
His last first-class appearance was against Hampshire in the Bob Willis Trophy in 2020.

Warwickshire batter Rob Yates:
"We got off to a brisk start with Alex putting away the short ones and punishing anything overpitched. It was good to get another 50 partnership up top.
"Then it was awesome to be out there with Tom. He looked class which was no surprise - he plays the ball so late and times it beautifully. We have had a good start to the season and to have the likes of Beau and Tom coming into the side is great.
"I was pleased with the way I batted but a bit frustrated to leave maybe 80 out there. But we are in a decent position after the first day.
"It's not easy to take wickets on this pitch and I think you have to be creative and also patient at the same time. You just have to go about it in a smart way."
Surrey bowling coach Jade Dernbach:
"First thing this morning the pitch looked like it was going to be a flat one, but we thought our best chance of progressing the game forward was to have a bowl.
"The pitch has played as we expected it to and we are getting used to this away from home. This seems to be what we are going to face now away from The Oval.
"The boys put in a brilliant shift and kept coming back and trying things and you never know, if we come in a bit fresher tomorrow morning and get a couple of early wickets, suddenly the game is wide open again. But it's going to take somrthing special, I think.
"It's attritional cricket and trying to stop the boundaries is the important thing and then trying to create opportunities if you can build enough pressure."

"If anybody is trying to bad-mouth LeBron James, they don't know basketball" - When Magic Johnson defended LeBron's championship losses

"If anybody is trying to bad-mouth LeBron James, they don't know basketball" - When Magic Johnson defended LeBron's championship losses originally appeared on Basketball Network. Magic Johnson has always admired LeBron James. He recognized what James is capable of as a player and later on as a leader of his team. In fact, LeBron earned more profound respect from Johnson when he played his heart out in the 2015 Finals against the Golden State Warriors. With Kyrie Irving injured, James had to step up and deliver. Unfortunately, the Cavs still lost, marking the fourth Finals defeat of LeBron's career. Despite that, Magic argued that fans shouldn't be quick to criticize LBJ. According to Johnson, who lost four times in his nine Finals appearances, people didn't realize how challenging James' situation was then. Nevertheless, Magic pointed out that LeBron still finished that series as the best player, which was something that not all players could achieve. "He carried that team. He was a one-man show," Johnson said of James in 2015. "And when you look at the numbers he put up and not just scoring himself, but the assists and rebounds, he was the best player on the floor for either team. And I think that he really just cemented his legacy as one of the greatest. Now if he can win a couple more (titles), he can be up there in the top three or four guys that have ever played this game." "If anybody is trying to bad-mouth LeBron James, they don't know basketball, because this guy is tremendous," he added. Magic says LeBron needs to win more titles After the devastating 2015 Finals, James and the Cavs bounced back stronger the following season. They upset the Warriors in their rematch in a historic comeback from being down 1-3. At that point, James was convinced he had become the greatest player ever. Four years later, LBJ secured another title, this time with the Los Angeles Lakers, making him a four-time champion. Johnson was once again impressed by James' ability to lead his team. However, for someone who believes the number of championship rings matters, Magic thinks LeBron needs to win more titles to his name and probably surpass Michael Jordan before he can consider himself the one true GOAT. "I don't know; it might take a couple more championships to do that. LeBron is special, and I don't want people always getting mad— we've got to celebrate both guys; Michael is the best, and we should celebrate him and celebrate LeBron. I hate when people get mad at you when you take one or the other. We should just say, 'Hey, Michael is special,' and he's the best to me because he never lost in the NBA Finals, and he averaged over 30 points a game. That guy is just unbelievable," Johnson once said. "LeBron is special too in his own right too, and people shouldn't forget that either, but when it's all said and done, if you come at me and ask me, that's who I am going to with, and it's MJ," Johnson concluded. LeBron still eyes another championship As it stands, James will be turning 41 years old this upcoming season. It would mark his 23rd year in the league and it's safe to say, he is far from being done. At this stage in his career, LeBron is still eyeing another NBA championship. This time he won't be the focal point of the Lakers offense now that they have a young and rejuvenated Luka Doncic on their roster which should alleviate a lot of the pressure from LeBron. Magic is definitely looking forward to seeing how things play out, but for him, James is already one of the greatest players of all time, with or without winning another story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 17, 2025, where it first appeared.

Penge beats Hojgaard in final-day duel to win Danish Golf Championship

COPENHAGEN (AP) — English golfer Marco Penge tapped in for birdie at the 18th hole to win the Danish Golf Championship on Sunday by a stroke from Rasmus Hojgaard, who missed a chance to climb into the automatic qualifying positions for Europe's Ryder Cup team. Hojgaard looked on course for the title in his home country when he powered into a four-shot lead midway through his front nine, only to drop four strokes in four holes from No. 10 and allow Penge to take the lead. Penge walked down the par-5 18th with a two-shot cushion over Hojgaard in the final pairing, but saw his partner roll in an eagle putt from 10 feet to the delight of the crowd at Furesø Golf Klub in Copenhagen. The 97th-ranked Penge needed to hole a birdie putt from 3 feet for the win and he held his nerve to shoot 4-under 67, finish on 16 under for the week and seal a second European tour title. Both victories have come this year, with the first at the Hainan Classic in April. Hojgaard (69) was the runner-up and will remain outside the six automatic qualifying spots, just behind No. 6 Sepp Straka, in the race to get into Europe's team for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black next month. There is one qualifying event left for both players next week. Hojgaard will play at the British Masters on the European tour and Straka is scheduled to play on the PGA Tour at the Tour Championship, which offers more qualifying points. ___ AP golf: The Associated Press
