ULA, Amazon launch second batch of satellites on Atlas V rocket
The Atlas V rocket launched from the Florida Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Monday, at 6:54 a.m. EDT, carrying 27 satellites to become part of its Project Kuiper constellation, which aims to provide Internet service to customers worldwide.
"We are proud to continue our strong partnership with Amazon and empower their mission to bridge the digital divide through reliable satellite technology," said Gary Wentz, ULA vice president of Government and Commercial Programs. "ULA, working as a catalyst to global connectivity in collaboration with Amazon, enables delivery of these critical satellites designed to drive innovation and connect the world."
ULA is set to conduct six more launches carrying Project Kuiper satellites before ramping up to its "next-generation" Vulcan Rocket as it aims to build out a constellation of 3,200 satellites.
The process is set to be completed through about 80 more total launches over the next several years.
Project Kuiper aims to compete with SpaceX's Starlink, which is currently the largest Internet satellite constellation with more than 7,600 operational satellites in low Earth orbit.
China is also working on two different mega constellations, Guowang and Qianfan which are both planning on featuring 10,000 satellites.
ULA's next launch is for the U.S. Space Force, USSF-106 the first Vulcan Mission.

July 31 (UPI) -- Video game publisher Electronic Arts has released a multiplayer gameplay trailer for its upcoming first-person shooter sequel, Battlefield 6. Developer Battlefield Studios showcased what fans can expect in the game during a live streamed event on Thursday. Battlefield 6 promises massive battles across cityscapes that are destructible and filled with tanks, helicopters and fighter jets that players can use. The sequel is bringing back the class system, with players choosing either Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon. Each class offers distinct weapons and roles to carry out. For multiplayer, classic Battlefield modes such as Conquest, Breakthrough, Rush, Team Deathmatch and Domination are returning. Players will also be able to craft and share their own maps and game modes. The game will also feature a single-player mode, with more details to be announced later. Battlefield 6 takes place in 2027, with maps set in New York City, Cairo and more. "Witness the vicious path of destruction carved by Pax Armata, the world's leading private military company. PAX purses the destruction of NATO and its allies, stopping at nothing to uphold their motto: 'Our Protection, Your Peace,'" an official description reads. Battlefield 6 is set for release on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and X and PC on Oct. 10. A playable beta will be available at three different points in August: Aug. 7-8, 9-10 and 14-17. Battlefield 6 is the first new title in the franchise in nearly four years. The most recent game, Battlefield 2042, was released in November 2021 and had negative reviews at launch.

You might inhale ight Inhale 68,000 microplastics per day

Photo by Adobe Stock/HealthDay July 31 (UPI) -- Scientists say the average person may be inhaling microscopic, lung-penetrating plastic particles at a rate that's 100 times what was previously assumed: 68,000 per day. "Everywhere we look, we find microplastics, even in the air we breathe inside our homes and cars," said the French team that conducted the study. "The biggest concern is how small these particles are, completely invisible to the naked eye. We inhale thousands of them every day without even realizing it." The study was led by Nadiia Yakovenko of the University of Toulouse and published July 30 in the journal PLOS One. As the researchers noted, prior research has sought to estimate how many microplastics people breathe in daily. But those studies focused on relatively large particles -- about 20 to 200 micrometers in diameter. Yakovenko's team tracked even more minute plastic particles, ranging from 1 to 10 micrometers across - far smaller than a human hair. Their incredibly small size means these invaders can penetrate deep into the lungs. The French team used high tech equipment to measure concentrations of microplastics in 16 air samples from their own apartments and cars. They found that in their apartments, an average of 528 microplastic particles per cubic meter floated in the air they breathed. That rose to 2,238 particles per cubic meter for car interiors, tested under normal driving conditions. Most (94%) of these particles were very tiny -- between 1 to 10 micrometers in diameter. Yakovenko's team estimated that people breathe in 3,200 larger (10 to 300 micrometers in diameter) microplastic particles per day and 68,000 smaller ones (1 to 10 micrometers). The findings point to "indoor air as a major and previously underestimated exposure route of fine particulate microplastic inhalation," the researchers said. Just how harmful are these microplastics? The jury is still out on that. However, in a study presented in April at a meeting in Chicago of the American College of Cardiology, researchers from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland reported that high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke rates are higher in coastal or lakefront areas of the U.S. with greater concentrations of microplastics in the environment. Research presented at meetings is typically considered preliminary, until published in a peer-reviewed journal. Microplastics might even be harming the brain. In a study published in 2024, researchers in Germany and Brazil found that 8 of 15 autopsied adults had microplastics detected within their brain's smell centers, the olfactory bulb.
