Vietnam receives 85 citizens from Cambodia following online scam crackdown
DONG NAI, (Vietnam): Vietnam on Wednesday (July 30) received from Cambodian authorities a total of 85 Vietnamese citizens that were detained by Cambodian law enforcement during raids on scam centres.
The handover ceremony was held at the Hoa Lu International Border Gate by the Dong Nai Provincial Military Command, in coordination with relevant agencies.
Previously, on July 23, 2025, the Vietnamese Embassy worked with Cambodian authorities to interview and verify the identities of the 85 Vietnamese citizens who had been temporarily detained in Kratie Province for alleged involvement in online scams and criminal activities.
The detention followed a nationwide crackdown on online fraud launched under the directive of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Initial interviews and verification processes revealed that the 85 citizens come from 22 cities and provinces all across Vietnam, including: Dong Nai, HCM City, Can Tho, Thanh Hoa, Lao Cai, Dong Thap, Dak Lak, Hung Yen, Khanh Hoa, Tay Ninh, Vinh Long, Quang Ninh, An Giang, Ca Mau, Quang Tri, Phu Tho, Lam Dong, Nghe An, Hai Phong, Son La, Gia Lai, and Ninh Binh.
The Dong Nai Provincial Military Command has conducted verification and classification of the individuals and carried out necessary reception procedures.
The provincial Department of Health also conducted health checks for the returnees.
Earlier, the Dong Nai authorities had instructed the provincial police to coordinate with relevant agencies and the localities where the 85 individuals reside to verify their identities, and to dispatch a task force to facilitate the reception process.
Dong Nai Province has also directed the police to coordinate with relevant bodies to investigate and strictly handle individuals and organisations involved in online scam operations, particularly those luring Vietnamese citizens with false promises of "easy, high-paying online jobs".
Such schemes often lead to illegal border crossings into the so-called online scam centres or disguised casinos in Cambodia. — VNS

Cambodia deports 27 Thais involved in call centre scam, four with arrest warrants
SIEM REAP, (Cambodia): Cambodia deported 27 Thais involved in a call centre scam, with four having arrest warrants. The authorities also allowed 300 Cambodian workers to return home. The Thai Consulate General in Siem Reap, Cambodia, reported on Thursday (Aug 7) that, in collaboration with Cambodian police, they had successfully dismantled an international call centre scam operation. The operation led to the arrest of several hundred individuals from various nationalities, including 27 Thais—14 men and 13 women. - Photo: The Nation/ANN After the operation concluded, Cambodia deported all 27 Thai nationals to Thailand, arriving at the Ban Khlong Luek Border Checkpoint in Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo, at 2pm. Colonel Napatpong Suphaporn, Head of Sa Kaeo's Immigration Police, revealed that, upon cross-checking their records, four of the 27 Thai nationals had outstanding arrest warrants related to the call centre scam. Additionally, 11 individuals were involved in 60 separate online fraud cases. The Thai authorities processed the individuals through immigration procedures before transferring them to the NRM Centre at 19th Military Circle in Aranyaprathet for further investigation and legal action. Vietnamese woman faces drug trafficking charges
JOHOR BARU: A Vietnamese woman was charged in the Magistrate's Court here with drug trafficking involving over five kilograms of drugs two weeks ago. Vo Thi Be Thu, 31, nodded to indicate understanding when the charge was read before Magistrate A. Shaarmini, but no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. According to the charge sheet, she was accused of trafficking 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) weighing approximately 5.286kg at a condominium in Persiaran Sutera Danga, Johor Baru, at about 2 pm on July 25. For this offence, Vo Thi was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. If not sentenced to death, she shall also be punished with not less than 15 strokes of the cane upon conviction. In the same court, the accused pleaded not guilty to two other charges of drug possession. She was charged with possessing 20g of MDMA and 9g of ketamine at the same apartment and location, date, and time. For these offences, she was charged under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years and not more than nine strokes of the cane, and under Section 12(2) of the same Act, which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or both, upon conviction. Meanwhile, before Magistrate Nur Fatin Mohamad Farid, the accused was also charged with possessing 11g of ketamine in another unit of the same apartment at around 3.20 pm on July 25. She pleaded not guilty and claimed trial under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code. The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutors S. Manushri and Siti Aishah Latif. Both courts set October 7 for case mention while awaiting the chemistry report, and no bail was offered. At the same time, the accused is also facing two additional charges before Magistrate Nabilah Nizam. However, the proceedings were postponed to August 27 to allow time for a Vietnamese interpreter to be appointed. On August 3, former Johor Police Chief Datuk M. Kumar reported that a drug syndicate led by a Vietnamese woman had been busted following raids on two apartment units in a guarded and gated residence. During the crackdown, drugs worth over RM4.9mil were seized.
