Pensioner attacked with panga, wife fights off robbers on Mpumalanga farm
A 73-year-old pensioner narrowly escaped with his life after a brutal attack that left him with severe head trauma.
According to Lowvelder, Jan Jurgens (74) and his wife, Antoinette (72), live on a farm along the Uitkyk Road. On Monday at around 18:45, Jan was in a storeroom fetching animal feed when at least two robbers attacked him.
Among other injuries, he was hacked with a panga and repeatedly struck in the face and on the head with a rock.
His farm dogs rushed to defend him, but the attackers turned on them as well, slashing at them with the panga.
One of the dogs, a Labrador, suffered deep lacerations and is still being treated at a local veterinary clinic.
'The assault was so severe that my father lost consciousness,' his son, Jannie, told Lowvelder.
The robbers tied Jan's hands and feet with shoelaces.
'Every time he regained consciousness, they would either kick him or jump on him,' Jannie said.
Antoinette was not at home at the time.
'When Mum arrived home at around 19:00, the two men attacked her as well. However, she fought them off and managed to lock herself in the house,' Jannie explained.
She called for help and staff living on the farm rushed to her aid. The assailants fled the scene on foot.
When the first responders, including Theo Laas and his reaction officers from ACS Spartan Security, arrived at the farm, they initially could not locate Jan. He was later found unconscious in the storeroom.
'He was severely injured and struggling to breathe due to the trauma to his face. One of the residents of Renosterkop Valley rushed him to a hospital,' Jannie said.
Jannie, who rushed home from Pretoria upon hearing of the attack, expressed his appreciation for the quick response and support from Renosterkop Valley residents.
The means of access to the property remains a mystery, as the family have security fencing and electric gates around their homes, as well as large dogs.
Michael Horn of K9-DTC Security on Claremont Road, along with his tracking dog, Charlie, was among the first responders.
'I was very impressed with the leadership role he played during the incident,' Jannie said.
K9-DTC deployed five dogs to assist in tracking the suspects. Handler Billy Deacon, with his dog Diesel, picked up a clear trail but lost it when the suspects crossed a stream.
Although tracks were found, no suspects were located. A panga, possibly used in the attack, and a beanie were recovered.
The police launched a manhunt on Tuesday to track down the suspects. 'The police showed real determination in their efforts. At one point, about 20 officers were on the scene, including a brigadier and senior officials,' Jannie remarked.
Despite the trauma, Jan remains in high spirits. A delicate orbital reconstruction operation to repair his broken eye sockets and facial bones was done on Thursday.
Mediclinic Nelspruit spokesperson Liza Pillay confirmed that Jan is in a stable condition.
Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed that police are investigating a case of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The suspects stole an HP laptop, a cellphone, and a handbag containing bank cards and an ID.
Anyone with information that may assist in locating the suspects is urged to contact Colonel Thami Mkhaliphi on 082 469 2431.

Beloved rescue dogs poisoned during house robbery
'I've lost my best friends and my ability to work,' said an inconsolable Kerlene Treunicht, speaking about her furry babies Red and Khaos, who were killed during a robbery at her home in Robertsham on May 23. Treunicht is receiving a lot of support from Fourways residents because that is where she runs her animal rescue organisation, Missing Pet Solutions. The organisation specialises in reuniting lost pets with their families through expert K9 searches. 'It's not just a job, it's a calling that my dogs Red and Khaos shared with me.' Also read: Become a puppy raiser for guide dogs On that fateful day, Treunicht said, 'Four armed men broke into my home and poisoned my beloved K9 partners, Red and Khaos, with sausage laced with illegal poison. They were sleeping peacefully inside, but managed to get out when the robbers forced their way in. They then found this sausage. Red died in his kennel. Khaos collapsed just outside hers.' She said the intruders stole laptops, cellphones, a PlayStation, a Nintendo Switch, jewellery, cash, and other valuable items. But her beloved dogs are a greater loss. 'They were more than dogs, they were heroes, and my family. They helped bring lost pets home, and now they're gone, taken in the most brutal, senseless way. I don't see a purpose anymore without my babies. Rest in perfect peace, my angels.' Treunicht added that she could not make sense of her loss, yet. 'But I promise you this. I will carry your legacy forward. I will keep helping the lost get found. I will do it with the same fire you gave me, with the same unstoppable drive you had every time we hit the ground.' In her dogs' honour, she has started a BackaBuddy fund to train new tracking dogs to continue the mission her fur babies lived for. Diving deep to bring closure
SASOLBURG – The SAPS is observing Youth Month by celebrating its young men and women in blue who go above and beyond the call of duty. When tragedy strikes along the water's edge, Constable Monica Delport (28) is not the type to stand back. She dives in to help grieving families find answers when their worst fears come true. Based at Zamdela Rural Safety in the Free State, Monica has quietly become one of the most dependable helping hands in some of the province's most heartbreaking moments—search and recovery missions following drowning incidents. In the cold, murky waters of the Vaal Dam and surrounding rivers, her role is clear: bring closure to those left behind. Monica grew up in Sasolburg, surrounded by the strength of service. Her father, a respected police officer, and her aunt, a member of the elite K9 Parliamentary Unit in Cape Town, were constant reminders that a life dedicated to others is a life worth living. That inspiration led her to join the SAPS in 2019. From the moment she stepped into the Graaff-Reinet Training College, she stood out, not just for her determination, but for her discipline. She was awarded Best Overall Student and named the Fittest Female Recruit that year, achievements that would lay the foundation for the challenging path ahead. After serving on the front lines of community complaints at Zamdela CSC, Monica felt the call to do more, to go where few others could or would. In 2021, she paid for her own Open Water Diving course, and the following year, she earned her Advanced Diving certification. It was during an endangered species operation at Vaal Dam in 2022 that she encountered the SAPS Diving Unit and made her interest known. Her commitment didn't go unnoticed. Slowly, she was drawn into official operations, and now, as a learner diver, she plays a critical role in bringing missing persons home. But she didn't stop there. Determined to support every aspect of water-based operations, Monica again paid out of her pocket to earn a skipper's licence, and since March, she has had the authority to operate SAPS vessels on search and rescue missions. 'To give closure to families is the most rewarding part of this work,' says Delport. 'When you're down there and you find what you're looking for, it's emotional, but it's also a kind of peace. You know you've done something that truly matters.' Monica now has her sights set on deeper depths and the SAPS K9 Search and Rescue Unit, where she hopes to combine her diving skills with the power of K9 tracking to save even more lives or help find the lost. For now, it is her own K9 companion, Kenai, a cross-breed rescue dog, that is by her side, which keeps her company. Her journey is a testament to dedication, faith, and fearless service. And for those looking to follow in her footsteps, she offers this heartfelt advice: 'Trust in God in everything you do. He has a plan for your life and will lead you to where you are needed.'
