Howe confident Isak will stay at Newcastle despite transfer talk

Yahoo26-07-2025
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe insisted Saturday that Alexander Isak is still a Newcastle player despite speculation around a move to either Premier League champions Liverpool or Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
Isak has not travelled with Newcastle for their pre-season tour of Asia, apparently because of a minor thigh injury, but Howe said the 25-year-old Swedish striker was a key part of his plans.
"Of course, there are always going to be things going on behind the scenes," Howe told reporters in Singapore, where Newcastle play Arsenal on Sunday.
"He is aware he's in the news every day, which I'm sure is not easy for anyone in that situation.
"Conversations between Alex and the club or with me will stay private for obvious reasons. We do share a good relationship," Howe added.
Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, has been "magnificent for us for as long as he has been with us," said Howe. "And he is very comfortable in the dressing room."
Isak did not travel with the Magpies after the thigh injury kept him out of Newcastle's friendly defeat to Celtic last week.
"He mentioned before the Celtic game that it would be very minimal and nothing too serious," said Howe.
"But he left training very early and didn't feel right. So, he's now back in Newcastle getting that injury assessed."
Howe remained confident that Isak will be wearing black and white when the new season kicks off next month.
"I said after the game against Celtic that I was confident he would stay. I don't see anything that is going to change that opinion of mine at the moment.
"It's football," he added. "And who knows what the future may bring."
The Magpies ended their 70-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup and finished in fifth place in the Premier League last season to secure a return to the Champions League.
"I think once you've experienced that feeling of winning, you want it again. So, we want to do it again as soon as possible, in all the competitions we are in," said Howe.
"We set the bar very high, and there's a lot of ambition within the team."

🚨 BREAKING: Man Utd 'strike agreement' to sign Leipzig striker

Manchester United have reached an agreement in principle with RB Leipzig to sign striker Benjamin Šeško in a blockbuster €85 million deal, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein. The 22-year-old forward, who has been a standout performer for Leipzig and the Slovenian national team, will cost €76.5m upfront, with an additional €8.5m in performance-based add-ons due. Šeško has been given the green light to fly to Manchester and undergo a medical ahead of the official completion of the move. The deal comes after heavy interest from several top clubs, with Newcastle United reportedly offering more but reports suggest Šeško favoured a move to Old Trafford, believing in the club's project and the direction they are taking. Šeško is expected to be unveiled before United's Premier League opener at Old Trafford this weekend. 📸 Maja Hitij - 2025 Getty Images

Alejandro Garnacho: Chelsea step up talks with Manchester United over winger

Chelsea have stepped up talks with Manchester United over a move for winger Alejandro Garnacho. The clubs have been in touch over Garnacho for some time but talks have now advanced, and Garnacho expects to move to Stamford Bridge. The 21-year-old has ruled out all options this summer, aside from joining Chelsea and staying put at Old Trafford. Advertisement The Athletic reported in June that Garnacho was one of five United players permitted to return to pre-season training late after reporting in May that United head coach Ruben Amorim had told the 21-year-old, in front of his team-mates, to find a new club. Chelsea's increased interest in Garnacho comes after United agreed a deal in principle with RB Leipzig for the transfer of striker Benjamin Sesko. The Athletic reported on Thursday that a deal worth €76.5million (£66.4m; $89.1m) and €8.5m in add-ons is in place between the clubs, with Sesko given permission to travel for medical tests ahead of the proposed move. Chelsea have held a long-standing interest in Garnacho and he would be the second United winger in as many campaigns to join Chelsea after Jadon Sancho moved to Stamford Bridge on loan last season. He would also be the ninth of the London club's summer signings, including wingers Jamie Gittens and Estevao, after winning the Club World Cup and Conference League last season. A price of £70million has previously been communicated to suitors. Amorim and Garnacho have had a turbulent relationship at times. The 'new club' comment followed United's Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, where the Argentina international was introduced as a 71st-minute substitute. After the final, Garnacho said he would 'see what happens' following a summer break and expressed his frustrations at not playing a greater role in the final. 'Up until the final, I've played every round, and today to play 20 minutes… I don't know,' he said. The Athletic reported in January that United would reluctantly consider selling Garnacho in the winter transfer window, alongside fellow homegrown talent Kobbie Mainoo, as to help them comply with the Premier League's financial rules. United rejected an approach from Napoli that month and while he stayed at Old Trafford, his reaction to being substituted off against Ipswich Town the following month prompted Amorim to reveal the forward had to pay for a team dinner by means of an apology. Advertisement He made 58 appearances in all competitions and provided 11 goals and 10 assists, but this was amid long-term absences for Mason Mount, Joshua Zirkzee and Amad, while Marcus Rashford and Antony both left United on loan deals in the January transfer window without replacements. Garnacho joined United's academy from Atletico Madrid in October 2020 and has made 144 senior appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals. Spot the pattern.
