Maui Arts and Cultural Center announces winners of art contest
KAHULUI, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Maui Arts and Cultural Center announced the winners of two art contests on March 18, with the winners being awarded a cash prize courtesy of the Eugene and Ruth Freedman Family Foundation.
The two contests include the Ruth Freedman People's Choice Award, an award determined by popular vote of gallery visitors, and the Gene Freedman Artists' Choice Award, which is a new addition to the challenge with the winner selected by a vote of all 40 exhibited artists.Maui artist Jett Green won the Ruth Freedman People's Choice Award for her portrait of Maui resident Lili Townsend titled 'Lili's Gift, the Beauty of a Lifetime.'
'Jett's painting engages the viewer with striking photorealism in the features of Lili's face, surrounded by a fantastical menagerie of colors and symbols that speak to her vibrant personality and the stories of her life's journey shared between portrait sitter and artist,' said Gallery Director Jonathan Clark. 'The portrait has a magnetic quality to it. We've seen visitors entranced by Lili's gaze each day in the gallery.'
The Gene Freedman Artists' Choice Award went to Damian Smith of Maui, who serves as the inaugural recipient of the award. His work, 'Aliʻi of Hoʻokipa,' portrays resident John Kalei Matthew Hoʻopai.
'Damian honors his subject Kalei, illuminated by the golden light of sunset at his familiar Hoʻokipa pavilion seat and flanked by an expansive panoramic composition of the North Shore that intertwines both person and place,' Clark said. 'A frequent plein air painter, Damian worked on this three-panel painting on-site at Hoʻokipa over the course of the summer, getting to know Kalei through talk story, shared meals and surfing.'
The portraits were part of the Schaefer Portrait Challenge, a triennial statewide juried art competition, which also serves as a signature exhibition of Schaefer International Gallery since 2003. This round marks the eighth edition of the competition and featured 40 artists from across the islands.
The exhibition continues in Schaefer International Gallery at Maui Arts and Cultural Center until March 22.

Comedian Jefferies set to host new FOX show before tour stops in Hawaii
HONOLULU (KHON2) — A new show on FOX is putting master manipulators to the test. 'The Snake' will feature 15 contestants leveraging their unique skills and relying on their powers of persuasion. Throughout the game, a 'snake' will be chosen to juggle the fate of their fellow competitors, all while trying to compete for the grand prize of $100,000. Kev Herrera Brings His Raw and Relatable Comedy to Blue Note Hawaii World-famous comedian and show host Jim Jefferies tells us 'The Snake' will have a familiar 'survival of the fittest' theme, but with a twist. 'There's no backstabbing you in this game, people are stabbing you in your front,' Jefferies said. 'What makes this show different from other shows is once you win the challenge, you get to become the snake, you get a snake medallion, the most coveted character in the game, and then we have a saving ceremony, not an elimination ceremony where the snake decides who they're going to save first. Then that person decides to save another person, and that person decides to save another person until we get down to the final two players, and the snake decides who gets to live and who goes home.'Jefferies is coming to the islands this summer for a pair of stand-up comedy shows, starting July 25 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, followed by a show at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on July 26. 'I've been writing this show for a very long time, it's good to go. I will say this about the Hawaii shows, these are the only shows in the world that I request to do every year,' Jefferies said. Check out more news from around Hawaii 'The Snake' premieres on KHON2 Tuesday night at 8:00 Hawaii Time. Tickets for his Son of a Carpenter tour can be found here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Meghan Markle Shares Pics of Archie and Lilibet Experiencing 'Pure Joy' at Disneyland
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appeared to enjoy Disneyland almost as much as their kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in a Reel posted to Instagram by the Duchess of Sussex on Friday. 'Thank you @disneyland for giving our family two days of pure joy!' Meghan wrote in the caption of the adorable montage of the family's adventures. The whole group was at the amusement park for Lilibet's fourth birthday. Playing to Peggy Lee's song 'It's A Good Day,' the first clip showed a nervous Lilibet holding her mom's hand as she approached her hero, Elsa from Frozen. Lili was also gifted a Little Mermaid-themed birthday cake reading 'Happy Birthday Lili,' making it a day of Disney princesses for the royal one. The group could then be seen on various rides, including Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters, Space Mountain, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, and the King Arthur Carousel. Meghan shared a clip of just herself and Harry on the more demanding Rise of the Resistance, laughing and screaming together as they came down on the roller coaster. In a group shot, Meghan covered her kids' faces, but showed off her Minnie Mouse ears. Harry was kneeling by the two children and has his arm around Archie. Lili is barefoot and wearing a white dress covered in a colorful graphic bow pattern. Before the Disney party, Meghan celebrated Lili's fourth birthday with never-before-seen footage from the delivery room taken just ahead of her daughter's birth. In the clips, she and Harry are dancing together to help induce labor, because both Lili and Archie arrived past their due dates. 'Four years ago today, this also happened,' she wrote in the caption. 'Both of our children were a week past their due dates. So when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn't work—there was only one thing left to do! 😂.'
