The Assassin review – Keeley Hawes's menopausal hitwoman drama is perfectly crafted TV

A menopausal assassin has been a long time coming, even though there is literally no more perfect pairing in the world than a woman rapidly emptying of oestrogen and a gun. I blame the patriarchy, but I understand its unwillingness to confront the truth that if women were free to express themselves instead of raised in mental straitjackets, then armed at 40, the world would look very different indeed. Keeley Hawes, who just gets better and more impressive with every outing, is that menopausal assassin, in the aptly named six-part series The Assassin. Julie is her name and trying to live quietly in Greece and spurning every overture of friendship in the village is her game. Alas, she is called by her handler Damian, after 10 years of quietude, to perform one more time. This happens just as her son Edward (Freddie Highmore, absolutely shining in what is essentially a light comic part in a bloody, murderous caper) comes to visit for the first time in four years too! Even hitwomen have to juggle home and work demands. Oh, and Edward's gone vegan since they last spoke and she got wagyu steaks in for tea. Handlers and kids, eh? Anyway, Edward's here to ask her about the fortune that landed in his account when he turned 30 and if it's anything to do with the father she has always refused to tell him about. She, more or less, tells him to shut up and eat his goddamn tofu. The Assassin is perfectly crafted preposterousness. It is stylish, witty, tightly written, even more tightly paced and takes the job of massively entertaining us at every turn with the proper amount of seriousness. It establishes its various plotlines swiftly and has us looking forward to their intersection whenever we have enough attention to spare, given that excellent things – from barbed exchanges between unmaternal mother and exasperated son to endless action sequences – are always happening in front of us. Obviously the main plot revolves round Julie. She soon realises the man calling is not her real handler (just in time to stop her killing the woman he has given as the target, which turns out to be doubly lucky for her, in a twist which adds much to the preposterousness and, I hope, the gaiety of the viewing nation). Then, after a massacre of almost the entire village by a very bad sniper trying to kill her, she sets herself the task of finding out what's happened to the real Damian and hopefully finding out why she is now a marked woman and more and more people are trying to kill her. This first involves pretty much commandeering the yacht belonging to her former target, Kayla (Shalom Brune-Franklin) and her berk of a brother Ezra (Devon Terrell), scions of a mega-rich mining family owned by a man called Aaron Cross (Alan Dale. One day 'Him from Neighbours! My God, he's doing well!' will not be my first thought when I see him, but that day is not yet here), and trying to get to Albania. An old colleague, Sean (Jack Davenport), arrives on a jet ski. Is he here to help or hinder? We, and a variety of weapons, soon find out. Meanwhile! Another plot strand is unfurling in a Libyan prison. Its newest inmate is a Dutch man called Jasper (David Dencik), who possibly has dirt on Cross that will get him out of said Libyan prison but not before he has added – with the help of the terrifying Russians who 'adopt' him in jail – his quotient of gory set pieces to the series. He, or most of him at least, eventually escapes and disappears into the desert to find Plot A. Meanwhile again! Plot C begins in London, with the astonishingly unexpected but always welcome advent of Gina Gershon as a mysterious woman called Marie who attends an art class in order to draw a picture of someone we recognise as Edward and a speech bubble coming from his gobsmacked gob the narratively fertile phrase 'You're my father?' Aaaaand scene! It's so much fun. Hawes is so good, so funny, Highmore so nimble and perfectly pitched and everyone else – including Gerald Kyd as villager Luka, who survives the massacre and follows the woman who is clearly his best hope of safety to the yacht, where they bond over middle-aged medication – turning in brilliant performances. Do not come looking for realism or social commentary or anything else that clearly has no place here – or I will smash your head in with a rock, like Julie does to her adversaries, especially if I've not replaced my HRT patch on time. Consider yourselves warned. The Assassin is on Prime Video now.

The Young and the Restless: is Damian really dead?

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Just like that, another character from The Young and the Restless was allegedly murdered. In the episode airing on July 14, Damian (Jermaine Rivers) was not only poisoned, but he was also stabbed. When the episode picks up on July 15, Cane (Billy Flynn) insists to Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) that Damian is dead and there is no sense in trying to get him medical attention. Additionally, Cane takes Chance (Conner Floyd) to see the dead body and asks the Genoa City cop to lead a murder investigation in France to determine who the murderer is (again, not sure how Chance has jurisdiction to do anything official in Europe, but we digress). Furthermore, Cane's assistant, Carter (Vincent Stalba), and another one of Cane's staffers move Damian's body with a sheet over it. Placing the metaphorical nail in this Damian coffin is the fact that Rivers himself took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the character was indeed gone. Even with all of that being said, we still believe there's a chance that Damian isn't dead and will be back at some point. First, there's something about the way in which this murder went down that doesn't sit right with us. It started out as a one-on-one conversation between Damian and Cane over a bottle of liquor. Damian outpaced Cane in drinking from his glass and immediately fell ill due to a poison. Cane claimed to be fine initially, but began feeling ill right before Damian got worse and was eventually stabbed by some mystery person. Then, again in the episode on July 15, after Cane walks away to grab Chance and bring him to the scene of the crime, the bottle containing the poison disappears, along with the murder weapon. Also, Cane is insistent that Chance not bring local authorities to help with the investigation and doesn't want the coroner called, but would rather like Damian's body stashed in a freezer on the property. Our theory here is that Cane orchestrated this whole ordeal with Carter's help in a big scheme to win back Lily (Christel Khalil). Cane desperately wants to reunite with his ex, and Damian stood in the way of that. Since we don't believe he's a cold-blooded murderer, we think it's possible he faked Damian's death with Carter's help, and will actually wind up hiding Damian somewhere, keeping him prisoner. Let's also not forget that Cane drank the poisoned drink suspiciously slow, as if he knew it was deadly and knew how much to digest to give the appearance of him being sick. Therefore, also making him a "victim" in this scenario. On another note, going back to Rivers' statement. If you watch the clip, you'll notice he says, 'Yeah, that's what it is, at least for now." To us, that sounds like he's leaving room for the possibility that he's not done portraying Damian, but rather just done for the time being. Lastly, from a storyline perspective, Damian dying prematurely stunts the storylines with Nate (Sean Dominic) and Lily, in our opinion. It would be nice to see Damian's relationship with his newly-found brother continue to develop and his romance with Lily continue to blossom. So will Damian make a soapy return from the dead soon? Heck, we certainly hope so. New episodes of The Young and the Restless air weekdays on CBS. Episodes become available to stream on Paramount Plus the next day. Solve the daily Crossword

The Young and the Restless spoilers: Lily targets Cane, Victor steps in — but did someone else plan Damian's murder

Damian (Jermaine Rivers) has been found dead, and The Young and the Restless spoilers for Thursday, July 17, suggest the hunt for his killer is heating up. While Chance (Conner Floyd) focuses on the facts, Lily (Christel Khalil) believes she's found a clue—and it leads her straight to Cane (Billy Flynn). Given Lily's current feelings about Cane, she seems ready to blame him for anything, from historical crimes to personal betrayals. But her suspicion this time is serious—she believes Cane could be tied to Damian's murder. Did he do it himself, or could he have hired someone? What makes Lily so sure? We already saw Cane at the scene, but not committing the act. Could he have orchestrated it instead—setting Damian up, drugging him, and handing him over to the actual attacker? Victor moves fast and for his own reasons As soon as Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) hears the news about Damian, his focus shifts. Not to grief or justice—but to family, power, and control. He's quick to think about how to shield the Newman name, and just as quick to consider how he might benefit from the chaos. If Cane ends up behind bars, assets and companies are suddenly up for grabs. Victor expects Jack (Peter Bergman) and Billy (Jason Thompson) to swoop in, and he wants to beat them to it. Under the guise of protecting Lily and her children, Victor may try to take over Cane's holdings. Of course, he'll present it as a favor. But if anyone dares suggest a Newman had anything to do with Damian's death, Victor's patience will snap. Expect him to come down hard—especially on Chance. A murder, a motive, and a mystery While Lily digs into what she believes is evidence and Victor schemes for power, the real question remains: who actually killed Damian? Cane looks suspicious, but could there be someone else lurking in the background? And what if this murder is just one part of a bigger game? Lily suspects Cane, Victor plays protector, but the truth behind Damian's death might surprise everyone watching Genoa City closely.

Is Cane Behind Damian's July 15 Death on Young and the Restless?

On the July 15 episode of The Young and the Restless, Cane confided in Chance about Damian's murder. He is dead. So, so dead. So very, very dead. But is he? Is he really? We have questions. Before the Beginning Damian (Jermaine Rivers — who said goodbye to Y&R) ended up with a knife in his back. Cane (Billy Flynn) told Chance (Conner Floyd) that he needs to figure out who did it and why. Pronto! The cause of death sure seems to be the stabbing. But then, why was Damian complaining of dizziness beforehand? Why did he say he thought his drink had been poisoned? Were the two just a coincidence? Real life has coincidences. Fiction should not. MORE: Find out what happens next on Y&R. In Fair Verona, Where We Lay Our Scene What if Damian was poisoned? But what if it was one of those poisons like in Romeo and Juliet? The kind where you seem dead, but you really aren't. Even with a knife in your back. What if this is all a long setup? What if Cane drugged Damian so he could fake his death? Which gives us the who. The question remains, though, why? READ MORE: Find out what happened today on Y&R. Police Squad Cane was the one who brought Chance to France, predicting that he would soon be murdered. What if Cane wanted to prove he was right by faking Damian's death and claiming he was the real victim? This will make Chance take him seriously. And maybe inspire Lily's (Christel Khalil) sympathy, as well. Cane sure tried to convince Chance that's what happened on today's episode, didn't he? WATCH NOW: Soap lovers, your Soap Hub Says podcast is here! Two To Tango But what if this plot goes even deeper? What if Damian is in on it? What if the whole 'oh, no, I feel dizzy' was a performance for the eavesdropping Phyllis (Michelle Stafford), so they'd have a gullible witness? What if Damian has been working with Cane all along? And his interest in Lily was just a part of it? Your theory + our spotlight? Email news@

Weekly Young and the Restless Spoilers July 14-18: A Killer Twist at Cane's Party

The Young and the Restless spoilers for July 14-18, focus on Cane's party taking a sudden turn in tone, and Lily's world is turned upside down. Meanwhile, Jack teaches Billy a painful lesson, and Audra and Kyle finally cross the line. Since Lily (Christel Khalil) came back into Cane's life, he has been carrying a serious torch. And Lily clearly hasn't felt the same. Or she's tried to make herself believe that. Instead, she grew closer to Damian (Jermaine Rivers). So it's no shock to see that on Monday, Cane (Billy Flynn) confronts Damian about his feelings for Lily. Cane has spied some close, intimate moments between Damian and Lily, and he has quietly seethed over them. But next week is when things take a turn at this endless summer soiree in the South of France. As a result, Chance (Conner Floyd) does what Cane brought him there to do: He investigates a crime. In this case, if you watched Y&R's next week on preview, then you know something happens to Damian. And from here on out, the party and escape room experience turns into an Agatha Christie-type murder mystery. This whole scenario causes Amanda (Mishael Morgan) to question Cane's motives, and before the week is out, Cane is forced to defend himself. Who else has a motive to off Damian? Was Damian the original target? Who will materialize as a person of interest? READ THIS: Here's what's coming up next on Y&R. Cane has trapped Genoa City's power players for long enough, and Nick (Joshua Morrow) takes it upon himself to devise an escape plan. Apparently, he won't do what Adam (Mark Grossman) did and walk his way down the mountain. It might be too treacherous for some. What does he come up with? Ziplining? Plus, later in the week, look for Nick to make a shocking discovery. What does he find? Meanwhile, Jack (Peter Bergman) and Billy (Jason Thompson) are at each other's throats again, and Jack is, understandably, wary about his brother's latest plan. Billy, in essence, is giving up on taking his start-up, Abbott Communications, to new heights in favor of joining Cane in taking Chancellor from Victor. Only he and Cane haven't talked about this. Well, Jack, who funded Billy's venture, is done with Billy not focusing on Abbott Communications. Instead, his brother is leaning into vengeance on Victor (Eric Braeden). And Jack hates that Billy decided to hand over the launching duties and the company to Sally (Courtney Hope) while he focuses on Chancellor. As a result, watch for Jack to teach Billy a painful lesson. Does he pull his funding, or something even worse? READ THIS: Full List of Daytime Emmys 2025 Nominations. Finally, this should come as no surprise. Audra (Zuleyka Silver) and Kyle (Michael Mealor) have been spending their time in Nice exchanging flirtatious banter under the guise of this Jabot/Vibrante marketing campaign. Look for these two to cross the line. Here's what we're wondering. Will Audra tell Victor what happened? Because that would violate the contract Kyle signed stating he would never hurt Claire (Hayley Erin). And if he did, he'd have to leave town. What's about to happen here? Got a can't-miss theory?
