Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas joins Pumas in Mexico after some advice from Ramos and Herrera - World
The Costa Rica goalkeeper called his ex-Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos, as well as Costa Rica coach Miguel Herrera, before he eventually agreed to join Pumas in the top-tier Liga MX on a reported one-year contract. The move follows a six-month stint in Argentina with Newell's Old Boys.
The 38-year-old Navas was introduced on Thursday as the Mexican side revamps its roster to try to end a 14-year spell without winning a league title.
'I'm here eager to give my all, to push myself, and to be on the pitch playing at my best,' Navas said. 'I have the mentality to make history, to be able to win a title. I believe we can achieve those goals by working with humility.'
No details were given but Newell's Old Boys said it will receive $2 million as part of the deal.
Ramos on Mexico
Navas and Ramos played together for five seasons with Madrid, winning three Champions League titles. The pair also joined forces at Paris Saint-Germain where they were part of the team that won the Ligue 1 title in 2022.
The 39-year-old Ramos signed with Mexican team Monterrey earlier this year.
'Sergio told me a little about his experience in Mexico. I know James (Rodriguez) is also here and playing at a high level,' Navas said at a press conference. 'Liga MX is growing and is very competitive, with a very good infrastructure, and I thought I'd come to a club where we can compete for titles.'
James Rodriguez, who played with Navas and Ramos for four seasons with Madrid, also plays in Mexico with Leon.
Pumas had already bought Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey, Colombian left back Alvaro Angulo and Ecuador midfielder Pedro Vite.
Help from Herrera
Navas also called Herrera, who had coached six first division teams in Mexico before he was hired as coach of the Costa Rica men's national team as it attempts to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
'I spoke with Miguel because he knows the league and the club well, and he told me I should sign without a doubt,' Navas said. 'I'm joining a big club, and having him in the national team helps you make these decisions.'
Navas also made the decision to move closer to Central America because his national team has World Cup qualifying games, starting in September, with 'Los Ticos' in Group C with Honduras, Haiti and Nicaragua.

Chloe Kelly converted the decisive kick as England beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to win the Women's Euro 2025 after Sunday's final had finished 1-1 at the end of extra time, allowing the Lionesses to avenge their defeat in the World Cup final of two years ago and retain their continental crown. It looked as though Spain would repeat their victory over England in Sydney two years ago as they dominated the game at St Jakob-Park in Basel and led through Mariona Caldentey's first-half header. But England did not panic, having already trailed against both Sweden in the quarter-finals and Italy in the semis before finding a way to win. Alessia Russo headed in their equaliser just before the hour mark, and no further goals meant a shoot-out in which Kelly -- who once again had a huge impact off the bench -- netted the winner. It was an agonising way to lose for Spain, but they failed to score three of their spot-kicks, with reigning Ballon d'Or Aitana Bonmati seeing her effort saved. Sarina Wiegman's England are therefore back-to-back European champions, with this triumph coming three years after they defeated Germany in extra time at Wembley to win a first women's major tournament. Defeating Spain here helps make up for the agony of losing that World Cup final in 2023, and the victory also confirms Wiegman's place among the coaching greats. She has now won three consecutive European Championships, having led her native Netherlands to victory in 2017 before doing the same with England three years ago. Spain, meanwhile, fell short in their quest to add a maiden European Championship title to the World Cup they won in Australia. La Roja dominated possession as expected, but ultimately paid the price for not putting the game to bed against an England side who never know when they are beaten. Wiegman's team had been 2-0 down against Sweden in the last eight before scoring twice to force extra time as they eventually won on penalties. Then substitute Michelle Agyemang's 96th-minute equaliser denied Italy in the semi-finals in Geneva, when Kelly netted the winner in extra time. England had ultimately not played well during much of their run to the final, but it did not matter. Wiegman had taken a gamble on the fitness of Lauren James which paid off, but not quite as planned -- having come off with an ankle injury against Italy, the Chelsea winger did not last until half-time and was replaced by Kelly. Caldentey and Russo exchange blows By that point Spain were already in front, scoring when Bonmati and Athenea del Castillo combined to set up Ona Battle and her cross from the right was headed in by Caldentey. Montse Tome's Spain, with seven players from Barcelona in their starting line-up, had already been in control before that and it felt like England's best hope was for complacency from their opponents. The best example of that came with the game still goalless, when Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll played a careless short pass to Laia Aleixandri in her own area. Lauren Hemp was alive to the opportunity and pounced, but Coll reacted well to make the save. Yet even at 1-0 it felt like England were still in the game, and they took their chance when it came in the 57th minute when Kelly crossed from the left for her Arsenal teammate Russo to level the scores. England -- with more fans on their side in the crowd of 34,203 -- now sensed yet another comeback win was on the cards, and it took the fingertips of Coll to prevent a Kelly effort from finding the far corner midway through the second half. Agyemang then came on for Russo, hoping to once again play the role of super-sub, while Salma Paralluelo was among those brought on for Spain. Paralluelo found herself in a promising position on several occasions as the game continued into extra time, and from there to the gripping tension of penalties. Beth Mead's first kick for England was saved after she was forced to retake, and captain Leah Williamson also had her effort stopped by Coll. However, Alex Greenwood and Niamh Charles both scored, while Patri Guijarro was the only successful taker for Spain before Kelly stepped up to win it. Ahly vs Zamalek in Egyptian League Cairo derby set for 29 September - Egyptian Football
The Egyptian Pro League (EPL) announced late on Sunday that the Cairo derby between Ahly and Zamalek, scheduled for the 9th matchday of the 2025–2026 Egyptian Premier League season, will take place on 29 September at Cairo International Stadium. The EPL draw, held on Sunday, also revealed the season's opening fixtures. Defending champions Ahly will begin their campaign against Modern Sport, while their fierce rivals Zamalek will face Ceramica Cleopatra. The 2025–2026 season kicks off on 8 August and will feature 21 teams competing in a two-phase format. According to the EPL statement, Ahly will meet runners-up Pyramids FC on the 5th matchday, scheduled for 30 August. In the first phase, each team will play 20 matches in a single round-robin format. The top seven teams will then advance to a title-deciding championship group, while the remaining 14 clubs will battle to avoid relegation in a separate group. Zamalek will face Pyramids FC on 1 March 2026, at the Air Defence Stadium. At the conclusion of the second phase, four teams from the lower group will be relegated. Final rankings in both groups will take into account the points accumulated in the first phase as well as results from direct encounters within each group. Bayern agree deal to sign Liverpool winger Diaz: reports - World
German champions Bayern Munich have agreed to sign Liverpool winger Luis Diaz in a £65.5 million ($88 million) deal, according to multiple reports on Sunday. Bayern had an initial offer of £59 million rejected by the Premier League champions last week, but their improved bid looks set to bring the Colombia international to the Allianz Arena. Diaz has reportedly been given permission to leave Liverpool's pre-season tour of Asia in order to complete a medical with Bayern. He joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 and won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup during his time at Anfield. The 28-year--old made 50 appearances and scored 17 goals in all competitions last season as Arne Slot's team clinched the English title for the first time in five years. Diaz was left out of Liverpool's 4-2 friendly defeat against AC Milan in Hong Kong on Saturday as speculation mounted over his future. "In Lucho's (Diaz's) situation, there's a lot of rumours around him lately and I cannot go into that," Slot said after the Milan match. "He's training really well with us but we have decided for now not to play him yet. "I'm used to talking to most of my players on a regular basis. I cannot comment much more about that." Diaz's impending signing gives Bayern a quality replacement for Germany forward Jamal Musiala, who has been ruled out for a "long period" after he suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup this month. Liverpool have been busy in the transfer window, bolstering their attacking options with expensive swoops for Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz and Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike. Defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez arrived from Leverkusen and Bournemouth respectively, while goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili joined from Valencia.
