Sam Thompson joins final minutes of Soccer Aid charity match as England player
The Made In Chelsea star had said he could not play for the England team after being injured while completing the Match Ball Mission running and cycling challenge, which raised more than £2 million for Unicef.
But Thompson made it on for the last few minutes of the charity match, broadcast live on ITV, which also saw Hollywood's Julia Roberts chatting to Wayne Rooney and Dermot O'Leary apologising to viewers for a Tyson Fury 'f-bomb'.
The match at Old Trafford, which sees an England team of former professionals and celebrities take on Soccer Aid World XI FC, raised more than £15 million for the aid organisation.
The I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! winner injured his calf during his challenge where he transported the Soccer Aid match ball from last year's stadium, Chelsea's Stamford Bridge, to Old Trafford.
On Friday, he announced that he would no longer be able to play and instead join the management team alongside Fury, however minutes before the final whistle, Thompson joined the Old Trafford pitch as a player.
Before Sunday's match, O'Leary 'profusely' apologised to ITV viewers after the heavyweight champion swore live on air while giving the England team a pre-match talk in the locker rooms.
He said: 'Let them know how good we are. We are England. We are f****** Spartans. We are Spartans.'
Presenters Alex Scott and O'Leary apologised afterwards, with Scott saying: 'What can I say about Tyson Fury? We do apologise for the swearing, but it is Tyson Fury, we don't know what's going to happen.'
O'Leary added: 'We do profusely apologise.'
The game ended with a 5-4 win for the Soccer Aid World XI team, with the final goal being scored by rapper and TV chef Big Zuu.
Among his teammates who joined him to celebrate was former Argentina and Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez, who scored four goals for the World XI.
Prior to lifting the trophy in the air, singer Robbie Williams – who co-founded the charity game in 2006 – announced this year's had raised £15,280,163.
Pretty Woman-star Roberts, who has described herself as a 'true fan' of Manchester United, was seen taking photographs at Old Trafford, smiling next to the former England striker Rooney, who, minutes into the game, scored the first goal for England.
Among the England team line-up alongside Rooney were former One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson and Olympic gold-medallist Sir Mo Farah.
Last Of Us star Bella Ramsey also joined this year's England team along with comedian Paddy McGuinness, former Manchester United player Gary Neville and singer Tom Grennan.
Last year, the match ended with a 6-3 win for England, with the Three Lions taking home the win for the first time in six years.
Since the fundraising match was first founded nearly two decades ago, it has raised more than £106 million.

From the protective bosom at Manchester United to going it alone in France - Gomes feels the weight of the shirt at his former club may have impacted some, but rules it out as a defining factor as to why many have flourished England international has diverted from a journey many believed he was destined to take - having joined United at the age of six, Gomes stepped through the echelons of junior football regarded as one of English football's brightest when he made his senior debut - replacing Wayne Rooney as a substitute at 16 years and 263 days - he became the youngest player to represent Manchester United since Duncan Edwards in hype was deafening, it seemed for all the world that Gomes' script was eight years and he is walking a different path. It's hard to flick the switch and understand you're part of the team."I remember being in the academy and hearing about those sessions: if Michael Carrick fires a ball in at you, are you going to be able to control it?" The weight of the shirt Life as a United player is rarely straightforward. His decision to leave United for Lille, via a loan move to Boavista, in 2020 has proved the making of the not to say leaving Manchester was a straightforward decision."It was obviously a difficult process because there are a lot of things that pull you towards staying," recalls Gomes."But then you have to think about what is right for your career. There were a lot of things I sacrificed." Life in Lille With more than 100 senior appearances under his belt, including Champions League experience, Gomes reflects with contentment at the decision to leave his comfort zone. That's not to say he always had strength in those convictions."It was difficult [leaving England] but also refreshing - the last few years, going under the radar, if anything, helped me concentrate," Gomes from the English spotlight, Gomes has honed his game, finding a way to overcome the obstacles that may otherwise have held him 5ft 6in (168cm), Gomes isn't as imposing, in a physical sense, as other central midfielders."It's difficult because I feel like it's something I have had to explain since I was young - I have had to rely on different strengths," Gomes said."When someone asks me I say I'm a midfielder, because I can play as a 6, 8 or 10. When I was in Portugal I played on the left, false nine or on the right. I feel I can play anywhere on the pitch."I'm technical, I like to be on the ball, dictate, help in all areas of the pitch. Receive the ball in any area."Paul Scholes was similar in that sense. Thiago [Alcantara], Deco they are midfielders, not 6s or 8s - just midfielders - that's who I want to emulate." England recognition Last summer's England call-up offered Gomes a level of vindication for the tough decisions that came came on in the 2-0 win over Ireland last September before making his full debut against Finland at Wembley three days later - under-21 boss Lee Carsley, taking charge of England on an interim basis, showing faith in Gomes' playmaking plays in a position England have found difficult to fill. I thought it could have been a joke so I forwarded the message to Lee Carsley and he said it was genuine."So I knew it wasn't a favour, there was a lot of work for me to get to that point."Thomas Tuchel's appointment has stunted Gomes' progress at international is yet to feature in either of the German's squads but, going into next summer's World Cup, the former Chelsea boss has told Gomes he remains on England's radar."We've spoken, we had a couple of video calls and a few messages," adds Gomes."He is very good in the sense that he is always watching and supporting. It's a very good relationship in that you can speak and message at any moment."I've not managed to get into the squad [under Tuchel] yet but it's something I will try hard to do."The World Cup is the aim. The pinnacle. That's an aim of mine and I know what needs to be done to get me there."Five years after leaving Old Trafford, Gomes is set for a second consecutive season in the Champions League - with his dream of playing in a World Cup for England still alive.

The World Cup winner could replace Andre Onana as United's first-choice goalkeeper. Onana has made a series of errors since joining the club and has recently spoken out about rumours surrounding his future. Speaking at an event in Burkina Faso, Onana told Afrik-Foot: "Will I leave? I don't know, we'll see!" Osimhen talks opened Victor Osimhen looks set to leave Napoli this summer and Footmercato are reporting that United have resumed talks with the striker after he turned down a move to Al-Hilal. The report states that Galatasaray remain hopeful that they can convince Osimhen to join permanently after he scored 37 goals in 41 games during a loan spell last season, but United could now hijack the move. Amorim is keen to add more firepower to his squad after Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee disappointed last season, with the pair managing just 17 goals in a combined 105 appearances across all competitions. Leverkusen eye Man Utd target United have been linked with a move for Manchester City youngster James McAtee, but Bayer Leverkusen have now emerged as a potential destination for the midfielder.
