Rupee to decline on risk aversion spurred by US tariffs, spot date shift
MUMBAI, March 27 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee is set to fall at open on Thursday, pegged back by risk aversion fuelled by the U.S. auto tariffs and the shift in the spot date to the next fiscal year beginning April 1.
The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated that the rupee will open at 85.80-85.88 to the U.S. dollar compared with 85.7050 in the previous session.
Asian shares dropped, and U.S. equity futures extended losses after U.S. President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on all auto imports, intensifying the ongoing trade conflict. U.S. equities had already experienced a sell-off before Trump's announcement.
The dollar index reached a three-week high on Wednesday before partially retracing.
The rupee's anticipated weakening due to the shift in the spot shift has been amplified by the souring of the risk appetite, a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank said.
With India's money markets shut on March 31 and April 1 for a local holiday, Thursday's spot trades will be settled on April 2. Wednesday's spot date was March 28.
The rupee at open will have to adjust for the carry cost - around 10/12 paisa - between this fiscal's last day and the next fiscal's first day, opening on a weaker note.
Interbank traders who went short on the dollar/rupee on Wednesday for the carry trade will be looking to buy the pair at open.
FOCUS ON APRIL 2
Trump's comments on Wednesday suggesting the reciprocal tariffs set to be implemented on April 2 will be "lenient", would be a relief for the rupee and other emerging market currencies.
"Until clarity emerges on the magnitude and scope of tariffs and their implementation, risk appetite is likely to remain muted," ANZ Bank said in a note.
The tariff uncertainty has meant that a measure of U.S. consumer confidence plunged to its lowest level in more than four years in March, with households fearing a recession in the future and higher inflation.

Building materials firm Lords Group buys rival CMO in rescue deal
London-listed firm Lords said it acquired the 'trade and assets' of CMO for around £1.8 million as part of a pre-pack administration. The deal will secure the future of around 120 workers at Plymouth-based CMO, who will join the wider Lords group. More info Reform UK leader NIgel Farage has spoken about his vision for the future of Wales, at a press conference today. He took to the stage just after 12pm in Port Talbot, with less than a year until the Senedd elections. His introduction had to be hastily rewritten given the UK Government's announcement, which went live at noon, that the winter fuel payment cuts are being partially reversed. Mr Farage said that Labour "knowing this press conference was taking place", announced they would make a fuel payment announcement at noon, as he was due to speak, but called it a "step in the right direction". He also announced independent councillors Andrew Barry and David Hughes, both members of Merthyr Tydfil council, have joined Reform UK, as they also took to the stage to explain how they had become disillusioned and moved to Reform. The most recent poll for Wales suggests his party is in line to take its first seats in the Senedd at the election in May 2026. Its only representation in Wales at the moment is with councillors, but a YouGov/Barn Cymru poll which asked people their voting intention for the Welsh Parliament in May put Reform UK in second with 25% of the vote. They were only behind Plaid Cymru who were projected to get 30% of the vote and ahead of Labour's 18%, reports Wales Online. In an opinion piece for WalesOnline, the party leader has given his first glimpses of policies ahead of the election. Mr Farage has said the party would allow coal mining again in Wales and says its long term plan is to "reopen the Port Talbot steelworks". The steelworks, owned by Tata, have not closed but its remaining blast furnaces were closed in 2024, with work now ongoing to build an electric arc furnace which will recycle previously-used steel. Thousands of jobs are being lost as part of the change. The Indian-owned company said the blast furnaces were at the end of their operational lives and too expensive to replace. The Port Talbot steelworks were, the company said, losing £1m a day before the blast furnaces were turned off. Reform UK say it would "use Welsh Development Grants to support real industry. We'll redirect economic funding from consultants and NGOs to actual factory floors, machinery, and industrial jobs in places like Llanelli, Shotton, and Ebbw Vale". The establishment of Welsh DOGE will help us uncover where there is woke and wasteful spending and we will make sure those funds are redirected to frontline services," Mr Farage pledges. During the press conference Mr Farage also took aim at the controversial 20mph policy, saying he would reverse it. as he said he doubted the electric arc furnace at the Port Talbot Tata site would "every be switched on", but says their plan is to "reindustrialise Wales". He says in the coming years more steel will be needed and the UK should produce its own steel, and its own coal. "I'm not saying let's open all the pits, there are certain types of coal for certain types of uses, for the blast furnaces, we can use here," Mr Farage said, insisting it would be a small scale, specific mining and not like the "heydays of mining in Wales". Mr Farage also said there would be no going back on devolution, but criticised the running of Wales since. In response, a Welsh Labour spokesperson said: "Nigel Farage has no plans for steel - just a camera crew. You can't restart a blast furnace with a press conference. "Nigel Farage says that hopefully they mightthey'll bring back mining. The people of Wales will see through the false hope and false promises of a public-school boy from England who does not understand them and does not understand Wales. Musk backs Trump amid ICE riots
Donald Trump has said his relationship with Elon Musk has ended amid their shocking feud , but that hasn't kept the world's richest man from firing off posts that just might claw him closer to the president's good graces. The chaos in Los Angeles provided one opportunity for the former first buddy to align himself with the president who made him a a fixture at Mar-a-Lago before the eruption of their extraordinary public feud. And amid online feuding with key Trump figure Stephen Miller, Musk on Sunday re-followed the president's deputy chief of staff on X, four days after unfollowing him. Trump on Saturday told NBC his relationship with Musk was over. 'I would assume so, yeah,' said Trump, who also warned of 'consequences' for Musk if he donated to Democrats amid their clashes over debt and trade. Vice President JD Vance , who has known Musk for years and could serve as a potential bridge between the two men, urged Musk to settle down. 'But I think it's been very restrained because the president doesn't think that he needs to be in a blood feud with Elon Musk. I actually think if Elon chilled out a little bit, everything would be fine,' Vance told comedian Theo Von on his podcast. Vance also ripped the idea, reposted by Musk amid the fury, that Trump should be impeached. 'I just think the idea that the president should be impeached, I'm sorry, it's insane. It's totally insane, Vance said, calling Musk's media meltdown 'not helpful.' Musk appeared to take down one incendiary post linking Trump to the late Jeffrey Epstein. 'Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files,' Musk wrote in the original post. He also went online to debunk a viral screenshot that he 'took' Miller's wife, Katie Miller, who is working for Musk following the end of her status as a Special Government Employee assisting Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency. The screen shot was of a Mille post saying 'We will take back America,' with a purported response by Musk saying 'Just like I took your wife.' The problem is that when online users took to Musk's own AI tool Grok inquiring whether the screenshot was real, it answered that it 'likely existed and was deleted.' Musk responded to Grok Sunday night: 'No, it's fake ffs,' adding a face palm emoji. 'I never posted this.' Musk wasn't only tamping down feuds. He was also applauding Trump's own efforts to flex his strength amid escalating protests in Los Angeles that began over ICE raids and led to weekend clashes between police and protesters. Trump deployed at least 300 California National Guard troops despite the opposition of Gov. Gavin Newsom, the first time a president had undertaken such a move in decades. The president kept up the call Sunday to 'bring in the troops,' even as Newsom said the deployment would further inflame the situation. Musk posted images of Newsom superimposed over burning vehicles, and reposted comments by Trump trashing Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass. He also posted an image of a masked man waving a Mexican flag over a burning Waymo vehicle. 'This is not ok,' he wrote. He also reposted JD Vance applauding Trump's actions, adding two American flags in his own posting.
