Billions to build Hawaiian homes: ‘The math is not mathing'
Lawmakers have concerns about the allocations of taxpayer funds, however.

Close to 30,000 Native Hawaiians remain on the DHHL wait list for homes, the Department estimated it will take over $6 billion to clear it.
'The DHHL has been underfunded for decades, it's over 100 years old, and it's never been fully funded and meanwhile, the Hawaiian diaspora continues to grow, cutting families from their Aina for generations,' said Ka Lahui Hawaii Political Action Committee Chair Healani Sonada Pale.
$600 million was appropriated to the DHHL in 2022 and the funding was expected to get about 2,500 names off the wait list. Latest data shows just over 1,600 have been removed, but a House Standing Committee report said $600 million more dollars will be needed in the current session.

'And if what you're telling me is out of the first allocation of the $600 million, you were only able to award 1,600 leases, the math is not mathing,' said Sen. Samantha DeCorte.
'Please know that we haven't spent all of the 600 million yet,' said Kalani Fronda, DHHL Land Development Division acting administrator.
Hawaiian Home Lands: Is there hope for the future?
$129 million from the 2022 appropriation has yet to be spent and lawmakers say that needs to get done before the department asks for more money.
The DHHL said hundreds of more leases on homes will be doled out in the current fiscal year, but one applicant who has been waitlisted for 40 years said taxpayers should not be footing the bill to build them.
'Just give them their land, allow them to build their own if it's such a problem with the money. All we want is our property, our land,' said Maysana Aldeguer, an applicant. 'I have eight, nine siblings and they're all on the waitlist and we are still waiting.'

An exact dollar amount that the DHHL is requesting from the Legislature this session has not yet been written into the bill. The proposal will be heard again in committee on March 18.

Angry with DHS, protesters disrupt job fair at Congress Plaza Hotel
The man in a blue Hawaiian shirt paced up and down the line of fellow protesters outside the Congress Plaza Hotel on South Michigan Avenue, shouting into a megaphone with the fervor of someone leading the sermon at a megachurch. 'They are not welcome in this city!' he yelled. 'This is an immigrant city!' The 'they' he meant were three U.S. Department of Homeland Security representatives inside the Loop hotel at the BestHire career fair looking to recruit new hires. The man with the megaphone was one of a small but loud group of around 20 protesters who gathered on Thursday, responding to the presence of the DHS workers. A news release from DHS on Wednesday announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would offer $50,000 signing bonuses, as well as student loan forgiveness and 'enhanced' retirement benefits. The incentives, pushed forward by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, continue the Trump administration's promises to reinvigorate border security in the U.S., and the $30 billion that President Donald Trump budgeted for ICE in the 'Big, Beautiful Bill' last month. Thursday's protest exemplified the frustration many Americans expressed towards the Trump administration's immigration policies, but in doing so, it clashed with Chicagoans searching for jobs. 'We're hoping to make this space as inhospitable (for Customs and Border Protection) as possible,' said Johnny, 33, a protester from Chicago who asked that his last name not be used. 'It seems like it's working.' At around 11 a.m., the protesters entered the hotel's event space, their signs and megaphones in hand. Most of the protesters did not attempt to conceal themselves, though one wore a hood, sunglasses and a surgical mask, obscuring their face. 'We are a group of autonomous citizens … who believe we must protect the most vulnerable,' said Bill Housewright, who carried a megaphone and led many of the chants. The protesters stood in front of the DHS table in an attempt to block the agents present from recruiting. They held up poster boards and hand-painted banners. A neon-yellow sign read, 'Trump, ICE, & CBP blame migrants so you don't blame billionaires.' They passed around a megaphone for a series of well-rehearsed slogans. 'No ICE, no KKK, no fascist USA,' they chanted. Protesters stayed in the building for about an hour, disrupting the fair. To some of the recruiters from other companies, the ruckus was frustrating. 'It got louder and louder, more protesters came. It definitely affected the job fair, because it stopped everything, and we're sitting there trying to talk to people, and they wouldn't allow it,' said Ernie Sobjack, owner of the Radio Broadcasting Group. 'We pay a lot of money to be at these job fairs.' Sobjack said it cost each business between $600 and $800 to attend the fair. He understood what the protesters were trying to do but was disappointed that it had to affect his recruitment efforts — though he still ended the day with a thick stack of resumes sitting on his table. Krista Burrows, a senior recruiter for ChildCare Careers, was less bothered by the protest, even though her table stood right next to the DHS one. During the chaos, she said it was hard for job seekers to get to her table and too loud for conversation, but BestHire extended the job fair by an hour to make up for lost time. 'We weren't really affected by it,' Burrows said. According to witnesses at the fair, four police officers issued a verbal warning to the protesters twice before they left the hotel. After the second warning, the protesters left the hotel, scattering DHS pamphlets across the floor in their wake. They relocated to the sidewalk in front of the hotel, continuing to chant as they formed a line outside the hotel's front doors; a few held up long cloth banners. 'Stop kidnapping our neighbors,' one read, with chains painted across the fabric. Back inside the hotel, Ross, 30, who asked to use only his first name, stood in line to talk to DHS recruiters — though he had no intention of applying for a job with them. He was at the fair not to protest but to find a job, yet grew angry when he learned that DHS had a table. He waited in line with prospective applicants to tell the agents 'they are pieces of (expletive) and they shouldn't have been here,' he said. 'I'm not trying to do a big thing,' Ross continued. 'Just look at them in the face and make them contend with themselves a little bit.' When he reached the agent — who said she does not work for ICE — she nodded and smiled politely at Ross while he spoke his mind. 'Even with the protest, more than 100 people signed up as interested candidates in joining the CBP team,' wrote a spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection in a statement to the Tribune. 'The protest made CBP's booth the most visited booth at the event.'

Truth Social's AI search is powered by Perplexity, but the platform can set limits on sources
AI startup Perplexity is powering a new AI-powered search engine on Truth Social, President Donald Trump's social media platform. The search engine, dubbed Truth Search AI, is already available on the web version of Truth Social, with public Beta testing on its iOS and Android apps planned for 'the near future.' Trump Media said in a press release that Perplexity's tech provides 'direct, contextually accurate answers with transparent citations' which will help Truth Social 'exponentially increase the amount of information available' to users. Nonetheless, the social media platform maintains control over which sources of information the AI search engine draws from. Truth Social is using the Perplexity Sonar API, which promises to query the web to retrieve current and verified information – even if that information is scraped from websites that block Perplexity's crawlers – and supports structured output so users can define the format in which they'd like to see the search engine's responses. Jesse Dwyer, a Perplexity spokesperson, told TechCrunch that the Sonar API will be accurate to whatever sources Truth Social limits it to. 'We have no visibility or control over that,' Dwyer said. 'Similar to you using the API inside of your own company or if you were an academic researcher and wanted to use it to search your own data.' TechCrunch has reached out to Trump Media to learn more about whether Truth Search AI will have access to the entire web, whether it will prioritize certain sources over others, and whether the AI will be directed to respond favorably about the president and current administration and unfavorably towards Democrats. To assess which sources the searchbot would cite, Axios asked it a bunch of questions — like 'What happened on January 6, 2021? and 'Why was Donald Trump impeached?' In all the responses, was either the most common or the only listed source of information. Others included The Washington Times or Epoch Times, per Axios. In contrast, Perplexity's public search engine returns a wider variety of sources, including Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, NPR, and Politico. Truth Social plans to refine and expand the search function 'based on user feedback as we implement a wide range of additional enhancements to the platform,' said Devin Nunes, CEO of Trump Media and a former California congressman, in the statement. Dmitry Shevelenko, Perplexity's chief business officer, also noted in the statement that Perplexity's AI delivers answers with 'transparent citations that allow anyone to dig deeper.' In late July, alongside his AI Action Plan, Trump published an executive order targeting 'biased AI,' or models that aren't 'ideologically neutral.' The order specifically referred to information about race or sex, unconscious bias, systemic racism and other ideas thrown into the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) bucket as 'pervasive and destructive' ideology that can 'distort the quality and accuracy of the output.' Truth Search AI comes in the same week that top AI firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google were added to a list of approved vendors that can sell their services to civilian federal agencies.
