Women's group demands action against doctor accused of sexual crimes
GEORGE TOWN : The Women's Centre for Change (WCC) has questioned why a Penang-based doctor previously arrested four times for alleged sexual crimes has yet to be charged.
In a statement, WCC also asked why the doctor was still allowed to treat patients.
WCC said it was appalled by the inaction, especially after the doctor was arrested earlier this month for allegedly molesting a patient at a private clinic in Bayan Baru.
According to police, the latest incident allegedly occurred on June 29 when the victim visited the clinic for stomach pain.
During the examination, the doctor allegedly instructed her to undress and then inappropriately touched her.
WCC said this was the fourth reported case involving the doctor in question, with earlier arrests in February and March involving allegations by three other women.
The doctor also allegedly filmed patients during examinations and asked them to jog topless under the guise of medical checks.
'Police said in March that investigation papers had been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP). So why haven't any charges been filed?' WCC asked.
'Why is this doctor still allowed to practise, including taking locum shifts at private clinics? What action has been taken by hospital authorities or the health ministry?'
WCC called on the health ministry to investigate the doctor and urged the Malaysian Medical Council to immediately suspend his medical licence pending legal proceedings.
It also urged the Attorney-General's Chambers and police to expedite the investigation and bring charges against the doctor in all four cases without further delay.
Penang cops to further probe doctor
Acting Penang police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin said the doctor was rearrested on Monday over the molestation claim and remanded for three days before being released on bail.
He said police would record several statements to complete the investigation papers.
The DPP has instructed police to wrap up their probe into all four cases involving the doctor, he added.
'For the three cases reported in the Timur Laut district, we have completed the investigation and submitted the papers to the DPP's office for further action and instructions.
'However, we recently received instructions from the DPP's office to include this fourth case and complete the overall investigation.
'We are currently working on it before resubmitting the papers to the DPP,' Bernama quoted him as saying at a press conference today.

Suspicious parcel triggers police report after MCMC chairman's name used without authorisation
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has lodged a police report over a suspicious parcel delivery that falsely used the name of its chairman as the recipient. In a statement today, MCMC said an initial check with the courier company revealed the sender had registered under a pseudonym and a specific phone number since June 2025. 'The courier has recorded 55 complaints against this sender, including 18 cases involving unsolicited deliveries and 37 cases of incomplete or failed deliveries,' it said. MCMC said the parcel had been withheld by the courier for police investigation. The commission stressed that it takes any suspicious deliveries seriously and will continue to cooperate fully with authorities to ensure public safety and protect institutional integrity. It also urged the public to be cautious when receiving parcels from unknown sources or without prior orders. 'In cases of doubt, the public is advised to immediately contact the authorities or the courier company for verification,' it said. — Bernama

‘It sounded like missile strikes': Witnesses describe explosions and flames during RMAF Hornet incident at Kuantan air base
KUANTAN, Aug 22 — Loud explosions resembling missile strikes were clearly heard around Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport (Kuantan Air Base), said one of the witnesses to the incident involving a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) F/A-18D Hornet fighter jet last night. Mazlan Abdullah, 61, who was at a food stall opposite the air base at the time, said he heard two explosions and saw flames from the area. 'After the first explosion, I saw fire inside the airport area with smoke billowing. People nearby also tried to see what had happened. 'When I looked towards the airfield, there were flames. Then came the second explosion, which caused the fire to spread further, and there was also a burning smell,' said the contract worker when met by reporters here last night. Meanwhile, electrical engineer Khairul Azli Syahmie Abdul Aziz, 26, said he too heard the blasts from his house located about 500 metres to one kilometre from the scene, but dismissed it, thinking the RMAF was conducting training. 'When I later saw on social media that a jet was involved in an incident, I still did not go to see because my wife and I thought it was just a military exercise. Sometimes the army does training here, so we're used to hearing such sounds,' he said. He added that his neighbours in Pandan Perdana also came out of their homes immediately after the blasts to check on the situation. Earlier, an RMAF F/A-18D Hornet fighter jet was involved in an incident at the runway area of Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport (Kuantan Air Base) at 9.05pm. Pahang Police Chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman confirmed the incident, saying both the pilot and co-pilot of the RMAF jet were reported safe. — Bernama

Umno supporters rally outside Bukit Mertajam court ahead of Youth chief Akmal Saleh's charge over Facebook post
SEBERANG PERAI, Aug 22 — A small group of Umno supporters have started gathering outside the Magistrate's Court in Bukit Mertajam here from 7.30am this morning, to support party Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh. The group of over 100 stood outside the courthouse and held up banners with the words 'Solidariti buat Dr Akmal Saleh'. The group, some holding large Jalur Gemilang, later accompanied Dr Akmal on a short march towards the courthouse at about 8.20am. There was a heavy police presence in the surrounding areas of the courthouse, most of them arriving at around 6am anticipating the crowd. The gates to the courthouse were also closed and only staff members, lawyers, media and those with pending cases in the court were allowed to enter. Everyone entering the premises were individually scanned before being allowed in. Dr Akmal will be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code at the magistrate's court today. Section 505(b) handles those causing fear or alarm to the public, and to induce them to commit an offence against public order. If convicted, a person can be punished with a prison term up to two years, a fine, or both. The Attorney General's Chambers previously said Dr Akmal will be charged over one of his Facebook posts, but did not specify which. Last week, Dr Akmal said he was called by the federal police to give his statement over the protest he led on the display of Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas, Penang. The AGC had previously warned Malaysians against vigilantism in cases involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang, amid furore over the Umno Youth protest.
