Amid a '70s design revival, colorful hard-stone watch dials make a comeback
Even by the standards of watch boxes — typically oversized for the objects they hold — Chopard's latest leather case, unveiled at watch fair Watches and Wonders, is strikingly large. But the grandeur is justified. Open it, and it reveals not one, but twelve L'Heure du Diamant watches, arranged like precious petals. Each piece features the same diamond-studded bezel, framing twelve different dials crafted from thin, round slices of hard-stones including apple-green jade, cobalt blue agate, cinnamon brown tiger's eye, white mother-of-pearl, pink opal, onyx, carnelian, and more.
The result is an elegant, unmistakably feminine collection with just the right dose of color and sparkle. 'My father, Karl Scheufele, introduced exquisite goldsmithing techniques that enabled the use of hard-stone dials when he took over Chopard in 1963,' explained Caroline Scheufele, Chopard's co-president and creative director, over a phone call. 'By the late 1960s, Chopard was already creating bold, colorful timepieces with these beautiful stones. Reviving them now is our way of celebrating that joyful creativity — while staying true to our heritage.'
Chopard's latest creation may be the most eloquent example yet and perhaps the peak of the hard-stone dial craze that has been sweeping the world of luxury watches over the past couple of years.
It's evident at Rolex, which reimagined its beloved Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 in uplifting tones of apricot carnelian, sky-blue turquoise and shimmering green aventurine. The watchmaker also updated its iconic Oyster Perpetual collection with a 28mm style, debuting in lavender and a matte finish, a first for the brand.
Gucci gave its avant-garde, hands-free Grip timepiece a bold new look in sandstone-hued jasper, while Dior's Grand Bal Histoire Naturelle features sodalite, aventurine and aragonite. Chanel ventured into the cosmos to fetch meteorite for one of its elegant Monsieur watches. Elsewhere, Cartier's elongated oval-shaped Baignoire watch has a mesmerizing, hypnotic dial featuring an irregular mosaic of mother-of-pearl, turquoise, and onyx stones.
This year, Piaget is also making a colorful splash with hard-stone dials. In one model from the Hidden Treasures collection, a green-hued opal dial peeks out from an intricately engraved white gold cuff, its outer frame rimmed with delicate emeralds. In another piece, a lavish sautoir with a rope-like chain is adorned with a 17-carat pink tourmaline and a white opal of over 12 carats, and holds a dial made of fiery red ruby root — the raw base material to which rubies are attached. The dial's vivid color is echoed by ruby root beads in juicy cerise and raspberry tones, interspersed throughout the chain.
One might associate such colorful hard-stones with ladies' watches, which have historically featured softer colors or delicate details, but they're popular in men's timepieces, too. Piaget recently reimagined its iconic Andy Warhol watch in four striking variations, each featuring a different ornamental stone: blue opal veined with iridescent green, warm brown tiger's eye, vivid green meteorite, and silvery meteorite.
'The distinctive shape of this case offers an ideal canvas for showcasing exceptional slices of ornamental stone,' says Jean-Bernard Forot, head of patrimony at Piaget. 'At Watches and Wonders, we're reintroducing the tiger's eye on a white gold case — an exquisite pairing that magnifies the stone's graphic, magnetic stripes.'
At the end of last year, Hublot added a bold twist to its muscular Classic Fusion model, unveiling dials crafted from lunar meteorite, pink jasper, turquoise, sodalite and nephrite jade. Now, at the Geneva fair, Gerald Charles — founded by the legendary designer Gerald Genta, who was often dubbed the 'Picasso of watchmaking' — presented the Maestro with a radiant lapis lazuli dial. 'Lapis lazuli was chosen because it was Mr. Gerald Genta's favorite stone,' explained the brand's CEO Federico Ziviani. 'We hold the rights to his original sketch, so this design is completely aligned with our brand's DNA.'
But why has the world of horology fallen for colorful hard-stone dials?
'Collectors love these dials because they bring individuality to a watch,' explained Scheufele, noting that each stone varies in hue, with unique streaks, inclusions, and shimmering effects that give every piece its own distinct character.
The appeal also goes beyond aesthetics.'These stones aren't just beautiful — they carry meaning,' Scheufele continued. 'From birthstones to lucky charms, they hold an almost mythical energy. That emotional connection makes them irresistible.'
Alba Cappellieri, head of the jewelry and fashion accessories program at Politecnico University in Milan, believes that collectors' growing fascination with hard-stone dial watches is closely tied to the broader revival of 1970s aesthetics. This resurgence has been particularly visible in luxury fashion: see the flared trousers, long sautoirs and bold mix of colors and prints seen at the latest shows of Valentino, Chloé and Chanel.
'The 1970s marked a break from modernist austerity, ushering in a more fluid, emotional, and decorative aesthetic,' Cappellieri explained, citing Emilio Pucci's 'palazzo pajamas' as a perfect expression of that era's 'relaxed yet sophisticated spirit, with kaleidoscopic prints and lightweight fabrics that drape naturally over the body.'
Much like in the 1970s, current rising inflation and geopolitical tensions globally may prompt consumers to seek solace in color as a quick and uplifting antidote. 'Saturated hues and vibrant combinations are taking center stage,' Cappellieri continued, adding that the appeal of hard-stones such as lapis lazuli, malachite and mother-of-pearl 'goes beyond decoration' and 'reflect a desire to celebrate nature and its uniqueness.'
However, for all their visual appeal and seemingly effortless ability to inject color into a watch, setting a dial using hard-stones is a delicate and complex process. Despite being classified as 'hard,' these stones are, in fact, fragile, explained Piaget's Forot. 'Opal dials are especially tricky — even after passing all the stress tests, the real moment of truth comes when the watch hands are applied to the dial,' he said. 'There's a tiny pressure at the center of the dial, and even the strongest slice can crack.'
Still, the risk is worth it. 'One glance at a hard-stone dial instantly evokes images of a hedonistic, flamboyant lifestyle,' said Forot. 'You can almost feel the warmth just by looking at it.'

The 7 Best Watches of the Week, From Idris Elba's Rolex to Rick Ross's Avi & Co.
Wearing tiny watches may be becoming more popular—Robb Report editors Paige Reddinger and Justin Fenner discuss this very trend in the first episode of Robb Report's new vodcast, The Wind Up—but some gents still believe bigger is better. We spotted seven celebs in sizable timepieces this week, in fact. James Bond contender Aaron Taylor-Johnson sported a 42 mm Omega Seamaster to a photocall in Paris, while Riverdale star Hart Denton rocked a 42 mm TAG Heuer Carrera to the premiere of Ballerina in L.A. More from Robb Report Why the Ultra-Wealthy Are Betting Big on America's Luxury Ranch Estates This Off-Grid Home Sits on 500 Vineyard Acres in Paso Robles Wine Country Pre-Owned Watch Sales Spiked by 160% in April Ahead of Trump's Potential Tariffs Brits Orlando Bloom, Idris Elba, and Stormzy wore watches measuring one millimeter less to various events in London, but still managed to make a statement. Elba flashed a 41 mm Rolex Datejust II, Orlando Bloom showed off a 41 mm Porsche Design chronograph, and Stormzy flaunted a 41 mm Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. At the smaller yet still impressive end of the spectrum, Ousmane Dembele sported a 40 mm Rolex Daytona at the French Open and Rick Ross donned a 40 mm Avi & Co. for his media mixer in Georgia. Below are the best watch flexes of the week. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was named an Omega ambassador in May and is already dutifully repping the watchmaker. The British actor wore a sleek steel Seamaster Diver 300M to the 28 Years Later photocall in Paris on Wednesday. The Seamaster is best known for being worn on the wrist of Agent 007 in the world-famous James Bond franchise. Taylor-Johnson has been considered a frontrunner to become the next 007, after Daniel Craig relinquished the role in 2021. Perhaps Omega and Taylor-Johnson are hinting at something? The 42 mm dive watch will cost you $6,200, unless, of course, you swindle it from Q Branch. Stormzy has a watch collection that is up there with the best of them: A practically impossible-to-get gem-set Patek? Check. A Rainbow Rolex Daytona? You know it. Several Audemars Piguets? Well, of course. The British rapper was spotted wearing one of his Royal Oaks at House Party's 1st Anniversary in London on Thursday. This particular iteration of the iconic model AP features a frosted gold case and an openwork dial with not one but two balance wheels. Incorporating a double balance wheel creates an oscillator with more mass, which in turn enhances the stability and precision of the watch. Not to mention, it looks incredibly cool. Price upon request, but expect it to be six figures. Rick Ross is one gent who loves big and bold wrist candy. The rap mogul, who has a multi-million-dollar watch collection, flexed a giant, iced-out Avi & Co. timepiece at his media mixer in Georgia on Monday evening. Avi & Co. is known for selling Patek Philippes, Audemars Piguets, and Rolexes, but also makes bling, too. This particular six-figure stunner is part of the Frosted collection that the family-owned watch and jewelry retailer released in 2024. Aptly christened the AH17 Frosted, the 40 mm rose-gold watch features 29.33 carats of baguette-cut diamonds on the dial and bezel, as well as a frosted bracelet and crown. It has an equally stunning price tag of $130,000. Actor Hart Denton of Riverdale fame wore the wristwatch equivalent of a pirouette to the L.A. premiere of Ballerina on Tuesday. The wonderfully complex timepiece was released by TAG Heuer in 2023 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Porsche Carrera and 911. Aptly christened the Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche, the wrist candy features a 42 mm rose-gold case, a shimmering beige dial, and racy red accents. Chronograph subdials sit at three, six, and nine o'clock, while a black 60-second scale with a Porsche inscription sits on the flange. The TH20-08 mirrors the original 901's acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds, with the movement's central hand accelerating swiftly then gradually decelerating over 60 seconds before quickly restarting. The piece will set you back $23,550. Only Idris Elba could make an aftermarket Rolex look as good as the real deal. The Luther star wore an all-black custom Rollie to a meet and greet at SXSW London 2025 on Wednesday. The handiwork of Italian outfit Black Venom, the Datejust II is finished in a black DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating and sports contrasting diamond hour markers. Other classic Rolex touches, such as the fluted bezel and Oyster bracelet, remain as is. The Black Venom Datejust is limited to 35 and costs about $18,000 (€15,900). Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele wore a winning Rolex to celebrate his team's victory in the UEFA Champions League. The striker showed off his iced-out Daytona as he showed off the league's hefty trophy to the crowd at the French Open on Tuesday. This flashy take on the original 1960s chronograph features a 40 mm platinum case, an ice blue dial with Arabic numerals, a diamond-set bezel, and a platinum Oyster bracelet. It is also equipped with the Caliber 4130 and the three subdials integral to the chronograph function. This Rollie will run you around $400,000 on the secondary market. Orlando Bloom just became a brand ambassador for Porsche Design, and he's already dressing his wrist accordingly. The British actor wore a coveted Chronograph 1 to the Deep Cover premiere at SXSW London on Wednesday. Released in 2022, the All Black Numbered Edition is a modern riff on the first chronograph Ferdinand Alexander Porsche designed in 1972. The German design studio claims the 41 mm successor is the first entirely Black timepiece in history. It'll only cost you $9,650, too.

The best red-carpet looks of 2025 so far
Aside from a few misses, celebrity fashion has been strong in 2025. Stars like Lauren Sánchez and Blake Lively have embraced glamour for dramatic red-carpet moments. Billionaire athletes, including LeBron James, have also stood out in designer fashion. Now that we're halfway through 2025, it's time to reflect on what celebrity fashion has looked like this year. Aside from a few outfits that missed the mark, most celebrities have stunned at movie premieres, awards shows, and other red-carpet events. Lauren Sánchez, LeBron James, and Miley Cyrus are just a few of those who have done the latter. Here's a look at their best ensembles and other standouts worn by celebrities this year. Halle Berry was effortlessly chic at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival. She walked the red carpet in a cream-colored lace gown from Dior. It had a mock neckline, puffed short sleeves, and a thin black belt tied into a bow around her waist. The dress was glamorous on its own, but Berry accessorized to perfection with Chopard diamonds. Also in France, Lauren Sánchez stunned in black at the Global Gift Gala. Dolce & Gabbana designed her strapless gown. It was covered in sparkles across its structured bodice and wrapped with a ruched fabric around the hips to enhance its floor-length skirt. Sánchez also wore an updo hairstyle and a diamond necklace from Messika to complement the statement dress. Elaine Zhong wore one of the best ball gowns of the year at the "Dossier 137" premiere. The Elie Saab gown made her one of the best-dressed stars at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. It was strapless, with floral appliqués extending across its bodice and the top of its full skirt. Zhong wore the white gown with a thick diamond necklace, a matching bracelet, stud earrings, and a few sparkling rings. LeBron and Savannah James subtly coordinated their looks for the 2025 Hammer Museum Gala, and it paid off. The billionaire basketball star arrived at the event in black trousers, $1,690 Louis Vuitton sneakers, and the designer brand's $3,800 Damier jacket in tan, which is now sold out. Savannah James, on the other hand, wore a dramatic pleated dress from Issey Miyake and $1,795 Giuseppe Zanotti heels with gold snake detailing. Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet matched in black ensembles at the 2025 David di Donatello Awards. Jenner posed in a sleeveless Schiaparelli design that featured form-fitting textured fabric, a deeply scooped neckline, and a floor-length skirt. Chalamet opted for a velvet Tom Ford suit in the same dark shade with a white rose pinned to his jacket. Not only were the stars' outfits sharp on their own, but they also strongly suited each other. Blake Lively had her best fashion moment of the year at the Time100 Gala. She wore a red Zuhair Murad gown and an assortment of jade jewelry. The former had a corseted top with ruched off-the-shoulder sleeves, a form-fitted skirt, and extra fabric attached at the hips. It was one of the best looks on the Time100 red carpet and one of the strongest outfits Lively has worn throughout her career. Sergey Brin dazzled with crystals at the Breakthrough Prize ceremony. As the billionaire cofounder of Google, you might not expect Brin to be overly fashionable. However, he proved those assumptions wrong with straight-legged trousers, a satin button-down top, and a suit jacket encrusted with pearls, crystals, and beads in leaf patterns. Miley Cyrus showed just how stylish she is at the 2025 Oscars. She wore a custom Alexander McQueen gown made from a mix of sparkling fabric and semi-sheer mesh. It also had a halter neckline, a long skirt with a short train, and a row of velvet below her hips. Her accessories and makeup were arguably even better than the standout dress. She wore lace gloves, a silver watch, diamond earrings, a wavy hairstyle, and bleached eyebrows. The look was unique and true to Cyrus' style. Selena Gomez brought the glamour to the EE BAFTA Film Awards. She arrived on the red carpet in a custom Schiaparelli gown that was impossible to miss. Its top layer was sleeveless, sparkling, and decorated from top to bottom with thick crystals. The latter piece also had a scooped neckline so deep that it sat below her chest and revealed a black velvet top with off-the-shoulder sleeves. At the Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift made a fun nod to her 11th studio album and her boyfriend. She wore a ruby-colored minidress designed by Vivienne Westwood. It had a corset top with a single shoulder strap, fabric that wrapped around her hips to create a miniskirt, and all-over sparkles. Most fun, though, was her leg chain, which Swift co-designed with Lorraine Schwartz, People reported. It had multiple rubies in a line that led to a charm of the letter T, seemingly referencing both her boyfriend Travis Kelce and a line Swift sings in her song "Guilty as Sin?" off her 11th studio album, "The Tortured Poets Department." No one has pulled off theme dressing quite like Jennifer Lopez this year. Lopez promoted her film "Kiss of the Spider Woman" at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where she wore a dress with spider-inspired details from Valdrin Sahiti. The long-sleeved design was made from lace and embellished with crystals in the shape of a web. It also had long sleeves, a mock neckline, and a slit in the back of its long skirt. Shaboozey looked cool and comfortable on the Louis Vuitton carpet at Paris Fashion Week. He wore a full ensemble from the designer brand that included light-wash blue jeans, a brown tweed coat, and a printed silk scarf over a white T-shirt. Zendaya looked like a princess in January at the 2025 Golden Globes. She was one of the best-dressed stars of the event thanks to her Louis Vuitton gown. The strapless design fit Zendaya like a glove, though extra fabric was attached at the back to create the illusion of a full skirt.
