NBC4's Jerod Smalley to join Marshall University's Journalism Hall of Fame
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WCMH) — An NBC4 anchor team member is joining another prestigious group.
Jerod Smalley will soon be inducted into Marshall University's W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications Hall of Fame. Smalley, who has worked at NBC4 for more than 20 years, will join four others in the honor, including Corley Dennison, Cathryn Gibbs Harris, Jeff Hopson and Patrick Wittich. The ceremony will be held this fall.
'Marshall University has a long and proud history of journalism and mass communications excellence, and this newest class of inductees into our Hall of Fame once again proves that,' Chris Dickerson, president of the SOJMC Alumni Advisory Board, which handles the nomination process, said in a statement. 'Every year, our board has an immensely talented pool of candidates nominated for induction. It's always a difficult process because of the rich talent.'
Smalley, a SOJMC graduate, is being recognized for his work as a news anchor and as the former sports director at NBC4. The school noted his awards as the six-time recipient of Ohio's Best Anchor by The Associated Press and numerous regional Emmy Awards, including four for his work on 'The Autism Puzzle.'
'Like all of our previous inductees, these newest ones have done great things all over the world in a variety of fields,' Dickerson said. 'We are extremely proud of all of our graduates, and it is an honor to welcome four more very deserving members to our Hall of Fame.'
According to the school, the Hall of Fame tradition began in 1985. The five people being honored in this class will bring the total number of inductees to 90.
Inductees need to have a connection to the SOJMC, such as being a graduate or a faculty member. Smalley graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors from Marshall University in 2001.
The dinner and ceremony for this year's event are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 7, in the John Marshall Room of the Memorial Student Center.

Accused killer in Morrow County shootout with deputy receives $5 million bond
MOUNT GILEAD, Ohio (WCMH) – A man accused of murder appeared in court for the first time since a shootout that took the life of a Morrow County Sheriff deputy on Memorial Day. Brian Wilson, 53, was booked into Delaware County Jail after he was released from a hospital over the weekend, according to the sheriff's office. Wilson is charged with aggravated murder after an alleged shootout with deputy Daniel 'Weston' Sherrer at home on County Road 26, just south of Marengo. Sherrer was reportedly responding to a domestic violence call when Wilson confronted him on the porch of the home. Wilson allegedly told Sherrer, 'You better just f—— go if you want your family to see you tomorrow.' before shots were fired. Several gunshots were heard and Sherrer was hit during the exchange. More shots were fired, a court affidavit said, and two firearms were recovered, including a semiautomatic pistol and a revolver. Apply now: FBI offers teen academy for central Ohio students Wilson, charged with aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer, was also struck during the shootout and had been hospitalized for nearly a week before his release Saturday. On Tuesday, Wilson appeared virtually for his arraignment hearing in Morrow County court and received a $5 million cash surety bond with no possibility of paying 10%. The $5 million amount was issued after Morrow County prosecuting attorney Andrew Wick requested a $9 million bond. Wick told NBC4 that he knew Deputy Sherrer 'very well.' 'He was one of the good ones,' said Wick of Sherrer. 'Always willing to help and always curious about updates in the law.' If Wilson posts bond, he cannot leave Ohio, must refrain from consuming alcohol or drugs, must remove all firearms from his residence, and cannot contact members of Sherrer's family. If convicted of his aggravated murder charge, the court said Wilson could face life in prison or the death penalty. Sherrer was honored with a 120-mile procession last Wednesday and tomorrow he will be laid to rest at a private ceremony at Marion Cemetery. Visitation hours will be held Tuesday from 1-7 p.m. at Northmor High School. Gov. Eric Bieniemy, Chris Hudson named to 2026 College Football Hall of Fame ballot
Eric Bieniemy, Chris Hudson named to 2026 College Football Hall of Fame ballot Many Colorado football fans hope Deion Sanders is ushering in a new golden age of Colorado football. Still, before the current era under Coach Prime began, there were the Colorado teams of the early 1990s. On Monday, the golden era of CU football was honored with Eric Bieniemy and Chris Hudson being named to the 2026 College Football Hall of Fame ballot. Bieniemy, Colorado's all-time leading rusher, was the driving force behind the Buffaloes' 1990 national championship. That season, he earned a unanimous first-team All-American and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting. Bieniemy still owns eight school records and was a two-time All-Big Eight selection. Chris Hudson, a cornerstone piece of Colorado's defense in the early 1990s, was a consensus first-team All-American in 1994 and won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back. Hudson finished his college career with 141 tackles, 15 interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) and 20 pass breakups. Their nominations continue a proud tradition for Colorado, which has seen recent inductees such as Deon Figures (2025), Rashaan Salaam (2022) and Michael Westbrook (2020). The 2026 Hall of Fame class will be officially inducted during the 68th NFF Annual Awards Dinner in December. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram.
